Manufacturing or service? Market Saturation and cycles of over-investment as a clue to future of service economies
Technological Forecasting and Social Change, 2011Co-Authors: Junmo KimAbstract:Abstract Economy and industry need Markets. The “tragedy” is that Markets are being saturated. Not only are they being saturated, but there has also been a tendency for cyclical over-investment whenever there is a new Market opportunity. These backdrops imply a critical question as to whether or not service sectors feature similar growth symptoms of Market Saturation and cyclical over-investment. To approach this question, this research, which considers data availability, focuses on the Korean service sectors as a critical case, and bears implications for other country cases. This research focuses on performance profiles of service sectors within Korean service industries data from 1999 to 2006. With the data, this research attempts to perform an exponential smoothing to forecast an overview of the service sectors. Judging from the findings, and using a little intuition, it is fair to argue that service sectors are not totally free from the ‘logic of Market Saturation,’ but whether service sectors are doomed to fall under the realm of overinvestment requires more attention for future research.

An exit for the IT industry?: Market Saturation and the convergence of ubiquitous technology for manufacturing and service sectors
International Journal of Technology Management, 2008Co-Authors: Junmo KimAbstract:Industries need new Markets. This mere fact appears with the advent of new technology and sometimes with the convergence of different segments of industries that have not previously been closely coupled. Taking this as a background, this research traced those sectors that have shown convergence with the IT sector. To fulfil the objective, this article adopted a Market Saturation index to find numerical taxonomy-based clustering for clues as to why the convergence phenomenon has occurred. This research concluded that the convergence could have functioned as an exit for the IT sector looking for new Markets.

retail Market share and Saturation
Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, 2001Co-Authors: Morton E OkellyAbstract:Abstract Graphing the relationship between Market share and share of space in a set of urban areas is a useful way to describe issues of Market Saturation. This paper considers two versions of the relationship between Market share and share of space. The two models are non-linear in nature: one is a logistic s-shaped curve, and the other is an exponential growth curve. Mahajan et al. (1988) . Journal of Retailing 64(3) 315–333) have discussed these curves in the literature, as a tool for determining Market expansion. In this paper the models are compared and discussed with regard to their fundamental assumptions and interpretation. The paper includes notes on formulation, implementation, estimation, and application. The concepts and techniques in the paper are illustrated with data from grocery chains collected from Markets in the southeastern United States.

Competitive Advantage or Market Saturation: An In-Depth Comparison of Flash-Sale Sites Through Content Analysis
Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Management, 2014Co-Authors: James Brian Aday, Kelly Virginia PhelanAbstract:This study aims to identify the representativeness of hospitality and service industry firms on flash-sale sites such as Groupon and LivingSocial. Currently, academic findings related to the frequency of offerings from these firms are nonexistent. This research relied upon a content analysis rubric and daily measurement of offerings from randomly selected cities represented by Groupon and LivingSocial for a period of 6 weeks. The daily offerings for specific cities on the Groupon and LivingSocial sites were utilized as the primary data sources. Findings indicate firms in these industries, outside of restaurants, have shunned away from offering their services via flash-sale mediums. The research findings demonstrate restaurants frequently utilize flash sales as a promotional tool. However, the abundant representation of these types of firms has created a scenario in which operators are compelled to offer deep discounts to make their offers competitive with offers from competing firms in the same city.

The potential for energy efficiency in electric end use technologies
IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 1993Co-Authors: G. Wikler, Clark W. Gellings, Ahmad Faruqui, Ken SeidenAbstract:The authors summarize a recent study conducted by the Electric Power research Institute (EPRI) that contains estimates of potential energy savings that will result if the most efficient electricity technologies readily available immediately attain complete Market Saturation in the year 2000. They first define and contrast various efficiency scenarios and then summarize the energy savings forecast associated with demand-side management measured by sector. These estimates have been developed through discussions with a wide range of experts both inside and outside the utility industry, review of the trade and technical literature, and simulations and forecasts using several end-use models. The main results for efficient technologies that reduce electric usage are presented. >

Potential energy savings from efficient electric technologies
Energy Policy, 1991Co-Authors: Clark W. Gellings, Ahmad Faruqui, Ken SeidenAbstract:Abstract This article contains estimates of potential US energy savings that will result if the most efficient electricity end-use technologies readily available today attain complete Market Saturation in the year 2000. These estimates have been developed not only through discussions with a wide range of experts both inside and outside the utility industry but also a review of the trade and technical literature and simulations with several end-use models.
