  • North Korea's Marxism-Leninism: Fraternal Criticisms and the Development of North Korean Ideology in the 1960s
    Journal of Korean Studies, 2019
    Co-Authors: Thomas Stock
    Abstract:

Abstract During the 1960s, as the Sino-Soviet conflict raged on, North Korea, for the first time in its history, officially began to reject the USSR’s ideological leadership and instead tread its own path under the slogan of self-reliance. As a result, those forces aligned with the Soviet Union, especially East Germany, heavily criticized North Korea’s new ideological path. Drawing on the East German archives, this study seeks to understand the nature of fraternal criticisms and their implications for the development of North Korean ideology in the 1960s. Scholars typically stress North Korean ideology’s departure from Marxism-Leninism, sometimes suggesting a departure as early as the 1950s. The present study, based on a thorough reading of archival documents and North Korean materials, challenges such portrayals, arguing that North Korea remained in the Marxist-Leninist tradition even while contesting Soviet orthodoxy. Developments in North Korean ideology were far more gradual than is usually assumed, building on what came before. These developments were by no means revolutionary or removed from the global intellectual environment. The Soviets and East Germans could understand North Korean heterodoxy and engage with it in Marxist-Leninist terms, just as North Korea did with Soviet Marxism-Leninism—there was no fundamental ideological split.

  • From Soviet Origins to Chuch’e: Marxism-Leninism in the History of North Korean Ideology, 1945-1989
    2018
    Co-Authors: Thomas Stock
    Abstract:

Author(s): Stock, Thomas | Advisor(s): Lee, Namhee | Abstract: Where lie the origins of North Korean ideology? When, why, and to what extent did North Korea eventually pursue a path of ideological independence from Soviet Marxism-Leninism? Scholars typically answer these interrelated questions by referencing Korea’s historical legacies, such as Chosŏn period Confucianism, colonial subjugation, and Kim Il Sung’s guerrilla experience. The result is a rather localized understanding of North Korean ideology and its development, according to which North Korean ideology was rooted in native soil and, on the basis of this indigenousness, inevitably developed in contradistinction to Marxism-Leninism. Drawing on Eastern European archival materials and North Korean theoretical journals, the present study challenges our conventional views about North Korean ideology. Throughout the Cold War, North Korea was possessed by a world spirit, a Marxist-Leninist world spirit. Marxism-Leninism was North Korean ideology’s Promethean clay. From adherence to Soviet ideological leadership in the 1940s and 50s, to declarations of ideological independence in the 1960s, to the emergence of chuch’e philosophy in the 1970s and 80s, North Korea never severed its ties with the Marxist-Leninist tradition. On the contrary, this tradition constituted the basic and most fundamental raw material from which North Korean ideology was shaped and developed. The evolution of North Korean ideology was not predetermined by Korea’s historical legacies. Rather, a convergence of historically immediate domestic and international factors led to the emergence of an independent ideology, an ideology that despite its independence from Soviet ideological suzerainty remained situated within a global Marxist-Leninist intellectual space. Though many scholars have argued otherwise, even chuch’e philosophy, the apex of North Korean ideological particularity during the Cold War, was hardly an idealism and instead quite reminiscent of a good old-fashioned Marxist-Leninist materialism.

  • Ideology, Telos, and the “Communist Vanguard” from Mao Zedong to Hu Jintao
Journal of Chinese Political Science, 2009
    Co-Authors: Josef Gregory Mahoney
    Abstract:

This work discusses why Marxist vanguard parties require ideology in their struggle to gain and maintain political power. Despite being considered theoretically inconsistent with classical Marxism and western vernacular, I chart etymologically how “ideology” came to China and proliferated during the Mao era as a positively framed term via, in all likelihood, Japanese renderings of Leninism. After discussing ideological challenges under Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin, I explore whether Hu Jintao’s scientific development and harmony concepts might be understood as ideological campaigns which—by synthesizing Maoist and Dengist approaches to ideology—effectively address what otherwise be referred to as the Party’s telos problem, and thus resolve in part the threat to the Party’s vanguard claim.

  • The Theoretical Basis of the Chinese Communist Party Is Marx-Lenin-Mao-Deng Theory
    Acta Universitatis Medicinalis Nanjing, 2003
    Co-Authors: Ji Yan-bo
    Abstract:

The Party constitution stipulates that Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory and the important idea of the Three Represents should be held as the guiding ideology of the Communist Party of China. Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory works as the general and theoretical basis while the Three Represents is the guide to action directed against the actual and present situations. It is suggested that a new term be created to formulate Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory so as to better clarify the function of the guiding ideology of our Party.

  • Construct a New Scope: Marxism-Leninism- Mao Zedong-Deng Xiaoping Theory
Journal of Kunming University of Science and Teachnology, 2003
    Co-Authors: Ji Yan
    Abstract:

The Party Constitution of the 16th Party Congress provides that Chinese Communist Party take as guiding principles Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thoughts, Deng Xiaoping Theory and "Three Represents" Thoughts. Obviously, Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thoughts, Deng Xiaoping Theory are the fundamental theoretical guiding ideologies while "Three Represents" Thoughts are realistic guiding ideology which is of immediate significance and serves to standardize our behavior. In order to put it simply and embody our party's multidimensional features, we can merge, generalize and abstract Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thoughts and Deng Xiaoping Theory into one term: Marxism-Leninism-Mao Zedong-Deng Xiaoping Theory.
