Mastoid Process a tool for sex determination an anatomical study in south indian skulls

Methods: Eighty (40 male and 40 female) complete undamaged skulls of known sex in book record were used for the study. Eight different measurements on the right Mastoid of each skull were recorded. Measurements were made using vernier calipers (0.01mm). The values were subjected to univariate and multivariate analysis employing SPSS Windows 13.00 version program. Results : Statistics revealed high significance (p<0.000) in five measurements except Asterion porion, Posterior end of incisura Mastoidea - depression of suprameatal triangle and Asterion-depression of suprameatal triangle. Direct method with all parameters gave discrimination accuracy of 82.5% and in step wise analysis an accuracy of 65.0%. Stepwise analysis selected Mastoidale Porion as the best discriminant. Conclusion : Reports on the use of Mastoid Process as a tool for sex estimation in unidentified human skeleton has been reported in different populations. The present study supports this finding among the South Indian population.

2013Co-Authors: Suresh Sukumar, Sushil Yadav, Karuna PaliwalAbstract:Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the significance for sex determination of the measurement of the area formed by projection of 3 craniometric points related to the Mastoid Process (the porion, asterion, and Mastoidale points) of 3D reconstructed computed tomography (CT) of skull and the result is compare the result of manual measurement of the area formed by projection of 3 craniometric points related to the Mastoid Process. Method: 3D reconstructed CT of 40 males and 40 females were analysed. The three craniometric points were located and marked on both side of the 3D skull and the measurement was done by advanced post Processing techniques. In manual measurement 40 males and 40 female skull were analyzed by digital caliper (0.01mm). The area of Mastoid triangle was calculated by means of the Heron’s formula. The result of CT reading and Manual reading is analyzed for the sex determination and the both result is compared. Result: From this study the areas of the male CT measurement of Mastoid is 828.53±118.54 mm2which is greater than female Mastoid which is 578.24±71.53 mm2 (T test value 9.901and P Value 001). Area of the male Mastoid which is measured by manual 805.87±90.99 mm2 which is greater than female Mastoid which is 620.56±90.63 mm2 (T test value 10.202and P Value 001). Conculsion:The area of the Mastoid triangle measured by manual and 3D reconstructed CT skull are used to determine the sex of the skull and there is no significant deference between CT scan and Manual method of area measurement of Mastoid Process in sex determination of south Indian population .

Method: Fifty skulls, 25 males and 25 females, were analysed. The three craniometric points were located and marked on both side of the skull and the measurement was done by digital calliper (0.01mm).The area of Mastoid triangle was calculated by means of the Heron’s formula. Total area calculated was done by adding the areas (mm2) obtained on each side. Result:From this study the areas of the Mastoid triangles in male skulls 1611.747 mm2 > areas of the Mastoid triangles in female skulls1 241.13 mm2. Minimum area of Mastoid in male Right Area (mm2) is 702.36 and left area is 680.16 with Total Area (mm2) 1411.08. Maximum area of Mastoid, in male Right Area (mm2) is 991.84and left area is 1008.25with Total Area (mm2) 2000.09. . Minimum area of Mastoids, in female Right Area (mm2) is 506.56and left area is 468.81with Total Area (mm2) 982.58. Maxium aread of mastoiod in female Right Area (mm2) is 857.35left area is 848.16with Total Area (mm2) 1705.51.

The three craniometric points were located and marked on both side of the 3D skull and the measurement was done by advanced post Processing techniques. The area of Mastoid triangle was calculated by means of the Heron’s formula. Total area calculated was done by adding the areas (mm 2 ) obtained on each side. Result: From this study the areas of the male Mastoid is 828.532±118.54which is greater than female Mastoid which is 577.502±71.22 (t test value 9.943and P Value 001). Conclusion: The area of the Mastoid triangle measured by 3D reconstructed computer tomography of skull can be used to determine the sex of the skull but the determination of sex can be better confined if the studies are carried out with greater number of samples.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of Mastoid Process as a tool for sex determination in unidentified skeleton. Materials and Methods: 70 (44 male and 26 female) complete undamaged skulls of known sex were used for the study. Mastoid length was recorded on the right and left Mastoid Process in each skull. Measurements were made with a digital vernier caliper. Results: Statistics revealed high significance (p<0.0001) for the Mastoid length for sex determination. Conclusion: Reports on the use of Mastoid Process as a tool for sex estimation in unidentified human skeleton have been reported in different populations. If the skull is broken into pieces, the Mastoid Process often stays intact. Therefore, it is appropriate to use the Mastoid to identify sex if the skull is fractured or not intact. This study tried to establish the discrimination functions for identifying sex from the Thai population based on width and height of the Mastoid. Then, these functions were tested with skulls in a test group to determine the percentage of correct classi fi cation. This study found that two functions have the highest sex classi fi cation at 78% accuracy (two and four variables). Others ranges from 66% to 76%. Chiang Mai Medical Journal 2011;50(2):43-50
