  • IMPORTANCE OF THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE IN Mathematics Studies IN ENGINEERING PROGRAMS
    2020
    Co-Authors: Anda Zeidmane, Svetlana Atslega
    Abstract:

Engineers use Mathematics programs for solving engineering problems and development of these skills for students is important. But understanding what problems could be calculated by programs and being able to create and solve problems is not less important. Students are also required to have theoretical knowledge for solving problems. The aim of the article is to explore the possibilities of improving the knowledge of Mathematics and to develop the necessary competences through changes in the Mathematics study process and the use of e-learning. The results of the research show that dividing theory tests into 3 parts and writing them before the task test improve the students' task test result. The lecturers of the Department of Mathematics created interactive self-assessment theory tests using environment Moodle to improve the students' understanding of the mathematical laws and their ability to better prepare for the test. The research findings show that students, who had used the self-assessment theory tests in e-environment, improved the results of the theory tests by approximately 25 %, the results in the task tests by approximately 30 % and the results in the final exam by approximately 21 % in the analyzed period.

  • Mathematics Studies AT UNIVERSITY : EFFECT ON THE PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE
SOCIETY INTEGRATION EDUCATION. Proceedings of the International Scientific Conference, 2015
    Co-Authors: Anna Vintere, Anda Zeidmane
    Abstract:

It is known that Mathematics has an impact on the development of the professional competence both directly (serves as a tool for solving and calculating various problems) and indirectly (promotes logical thinking, develops skills to formulate and solve problems etc.). To identify importance of Mathematics Studies in the development of professional competence in assessment of graduates the research was done by Latvian University of Agriculture and Siauliai University in the framework of Latvian-Lithuanian cross-border cooperation program‘s project „Cross-border network for adapting mathematical competences in the socio-economical development”. A questionnaire based research was the part of this research. The survey results obtained in Latvia are analysed in this article and include the following aspects: Mathematics in professional practice and need for improvement of mathematical knowledge and assessment of practical potential of Mathematics.

  • method of study modules in higher Mathematics Studies
    Research in Mathematical Education, 2009
    Co-Authors: Anda Zeidmane, Anna Vintere
    Abstract:

Being aware of the present situation in Latvia and in whole Europe, Mathematics curriculum development is a topical issue. One of the ways how to deal with it is the application of study modules in the study process. The division of Mathematics Studies in the Forms and Content Modules allows students to understand better the organization of study process of Mathematics, and creates conceptual awareness of Mathematics logics and its practical application helping students to understand causal relationships and to develop cognitive skills. In the article will be present same theoretical aspects and practical experience in Latvia University of Agriculture.

  • THE USE OF ICT IN Mathematics Studies - BALTIC STATES' EXPERIENCE
    2020
Co-Authors: Anna Vintere, Eve Arevee, Daiva Rimkuviene
    Abstract:

In this article are collected experience and knowledge about ICT usage in Mathematics Studies and applied software in three Baltics States Agricultural Universities: Latvia University of Agriculture, Estonian University of Life Science and Aleksandras Stulginskis University (Lithuania). The problem has been approached by analysing and evaluating the scientific literature for the development of the methodological basis of research, which includes three directions: the evaluation of ICT use in the Mathematics study process organization (syllabus organization, used e-environment, study materials availability and accessibility to students, ICT use in assessment, ICT for teaching methods and communication); used courseware (mandatory, by teachers initiative) and support for teachers (opportunities to develop professional ICT capabilities, technical support, an access to digital resource materials, exchange of ideas).

  • What can be done to bridge the competency gap between upper-secondary school and university Mathematics?
2011 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON), 2011
Co-Authors: Kirsi Silius, Seppo Pohjolainen, Jussi Kangas, Thumas Miilumäki, Jorma Joutsenlahti
    Abstract:

It has been observed that the mathematical skills of students entering university have deteriorated in Western Countries in recent decades. In the report of SEFI (The European Society for Engineering Education), it is emphasized that this phenomenon prevails in Europe. Mathematical competency is a prerequisite for studying technical sciences. Most Finnish students completing advanced upper-secondary school Mathematics continue their Studies in universities and polytechnics. Student enrollment in technical sciences has increased which has caused decreasing in a proportion of students with sufficient mathematical competency. This creates a knowledge gap between upper-secondary school Mathematics and university Mathematics. Bridging this gap requires measures at the very beginning of Mathematics Studies at university. The purpose of the paper is to describe the actions and supportive measures taken at Tampere University of Technology (TUT) to improve the situation. The effects of the measures taken are likewise presented.
