    Abstract:

    Objectives: The Yearbook of Medical Informatics is published annually by the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) and contains a selection of recent excellent papers on Medical Informatics research (http://www.yearbook.uni-hd.de). The 2002 Yearbook of Medical Informatics took as its theme the topic of Medical Imaging Informatics. In this paper, we will summarize the contributions of Medical Informatics researchers to the development of Medical imaging Informatics, discuss challenges and opportunities of imaging Informatics, and present the lessons learned from the IMIA Yearbook 2002. Results and Conclusions: Medical Informatics researchers have contributed to the development of Medical imaging methods and systems since the inception of this field approximately 40 years ago. The Yearbook presents selected papers and reviews on this important topic. In addition, as usual, the Yearbook 2002 also contains a variety of papers and reviews on other subjects relevant to Medical Informatics, such as BioInformatics, Computer-supported education, Health and clinical management, Health information systems, Knowledge processing and decision support, Patient records, and Signal processing.

    Abstract:

    The Yearbook of Medical Informatics is published annually by the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) and contains a selection of recent excellent papers on Medical Informatics research (http://www.med.uni-heidelberg.de/mi/yearbook/index.htm). The special topic of the just published Yearbook 2001 is “Digital Libraries and Medicine”. Digital libraries have changed dramatically and will continue to change the way we work with Medical knowledge. The selected papers present recent research and new results on digital libraries. As usual, the Yearbook 2001 also contains a variety of papers on other subjects relevant to Medical Informatics, such as Electronic Patient Records, Health Information Systems, Health and Clinical Management, Decision Support Systems, Education, as well as Image and Signal Processing. This paper will briefly introduce the contributions covering digital libraries and will show how Medical Informatics research contributes to this important topic.

    Abstract:

    Objectives: The Yearbook of Medical Informatics is published annually by the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) and contains a selection of excellent papers on Medical Informatics research which have been recently published (http://www. yearbook.uni-hd.de). The 2003 Yearbook of Medical Informatics took as its theme the role of Medical Informatics for the quality of health care. In this paper, we will discuss challenges for health care, and the lessons learned from editing IMIA Yearbook 2003. Results and Conclusions: Modern information processing methodology and information and communication technology have strongly influenced our societies and health care. As a consequence of this, Medical Informatics as a discipline has taken a leading role in the further development of health care. This involves developing information systems that enhance opportunities for global access to health services and Medical knowledge. Informatics methodology and technology will facilitate high quality of care in aging societies, and will decrease the possibilities of health care errors. It will also enable the dissemination of the latest Medical and health information on the web to consumers and health care providers alike. The selected papers of the IMIA Yearbook 2003 present clear examples and future challenges, and they highlight how various sub-disciplines of Medical Informatics can contribute to this.

  • Medical Informatics Education - Past, Today and Future

    Abstract:

    The development of Medical Informatics goes back to the second half of the twentieth century with the start of the automation of processes. Medical Informatics education plays an important role in the education of health care providers and Medical providers. Education in Medical Informatics is not only important for Medical students but also for other Medical staff at all professional levels of education. Integrating Medical Informatics into the full spectrum of Medical education is a vital step required for the understanding and practice of modern medicine. There are curricula in the field of Medical Informatics at many universities in Europe. Great roles in this field had the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) and – the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI). Working groups of IMIA and EFMI defined and recommended concepts and methodologies of education for Medical Informatics on three levels. Generally in all European countries Medical education at universities is organized on the basis of the Bologna concept, which has improved the quality of teaching process in plenty matters, but it has brought a big number of highly educated staff, that are younger than average, but also have average level of knowledge. Basically, the Bologna system has brought averageness we tried to escape from. With the introduction of the Bologna process in Bosnia and Herzegovina and other countries, a new process is being introduced which introduces a new curriculum, a greater number of subjects, a complemented systematization of knowledge and the need to correct past attitudes. Since the curriculum of Medical Informatics varies between countries and universities and faculties in the country, it is necessary to take steps towards the unification of the curriculum at the international level. Aim of the article is to show the status of Medical Informatics education in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Europe.

    The breakthrough of the computer and information technologies in all the segments of the society, led to the needs for the computer and information technologies. The knowledge of information technology is now part of general literacy. The computer literacy does not require comprehensive and detailed knowledge of the electronics or programming. Although with the electronic computer which is the invention of our age, the attempts of the construction of the first machine for the processing of the information reach far in the history of human civilization. The only and global function of a computer data processing can be naturally separated into the series of the other elementary operations, as for examples are: ‘the followup of the data, their registration, reproduction, selection, sorting, and comparison’ and so on. The computers are being classified according to ‘the purpose, type and computer size’. According to the purpose the computers it can be of the general and specific purposes. The computers for the general purpose serve for the commercial applications or any other application that is necessary. If Medical Informatics is regarded as a scientific discipline dealing with theory and practice of information processes in medicine, comprising data communication by information and communication technologies (ICT), with computers as an especially important ICT, then it can be stated that the history Medical Informatics is connected with the beginnings of computer usage in medicine. The Medical Informatics is the foundation for understanding and practice of the up-to-day medicine. Its basic tool is the computer, subject of studying and the means by which the aspects and achieve the new knowledge in the studying of a man, his health and disease, and functioning of the total health activities. Current network system possesses the limited global performance in the organization of health care, and that is especially expressed in the clinical medicine, where the computer technology has not received the wanted applications yet. In front of us lies the brilliant future of the Medical Informatics. It should expect that the application of terminal and personal computers with more simple manners of operation will enable routine use of computer technology by all health professionals in the fields of telemedicine, distance learning (DL) (web-based Medical education), application of ICT, Medical robotics, genomics, etc. The development of nature languages for communication with the computers and the identification of input voice will make the work simpler. Regarding the future of Medical Informatics education there are numerous controversies. Everybody agrees that the Medical Informatics is very significant for the whole health care and for the needs for personnel. However, there is not yet the general agreement regarding the teaching programs, because the Medical Informatics is very involved and propulsive, what makes the performance of the stable education programs more difficult. There are also not general agreement in which year of studding should transfer the knowledge from Medical Informatics. The majority of the experts still agree that the priority should be given in later study years, since more and more students enroll the faculties with prior Informatics illiteracy, and the comprehension of some Medical Informatics fields is not possible without prior clinical knowledge.

    Medical Informatics, as scientific discipline, has to do with all aspects of understanding and promoting the effective organization, analysis, management, and use of information in health care. While the field of Medical Informatics shares the general scope of these interests with some other health care specialities and disciplines, Medical (Health) Informatics has developed its own areas of emphasis and approaches that have set it apart from other disciplines and specialities. For the last fifties of 20th century and some more years of 21st century, Medical Informatics had the five time periods of characteristic development.     Abstract:

    Medical Informatics, as a separate Medical discipline, is quickly developing in our country, both in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In our country, Medical Informatics has been a separate subject for the last ten years with regard to Medical curriculum at the bioMedical faculties in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is in accordance with the project of education related to the Bologna declaration and the project EURO MEDICINA. Last year, the Chair of Medical Informatics of the Medical Faculty in Sarajevo celebrated ten years of its existence. The research was performed using a separate questionnaire patterning data with defined characteristics for the quality assessment of the performed course. The total attitude of the assessed students shows dominant satisfaction with the majority of the parameters that are important for the assessment of the quality and the tuition contents which were evaluated through use of the questionnaire. Education in the field of Medical Informatics is based on the concept which is used in developed countries, according to the recommendations of the working groups of the European and international association of Medical Informatics. Theoretical and practical teaching and training performance as a whole is performed by use of the computer equipment, and the final knowledge check of the students is also performed using the Data Base Management System MSAccess specifically designed to cover full teaching and training material by using question sets in the data base which encircled nearly 1500 question combinations. In this paper, the author presents ten years of experience of Medical Informatics education at bioMedical faculties in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

    The purpose of this study is to identify publication output, and research areas, as well as descriptively and quantitatively characterize the field of Medical Informatics through publication trend analysis over a twenty year period (1987–2006). A bibliometric analysis of Medical Informatics citations indexed in Medline was performed using publication trends, journal frequency, impact factors, MeSH term frequencies and characteristics of citations. There were 77,023 Medical Informatics articles published during this 20 year period in 4,644 unique journals. The average annual article publication growth rate was 12%. The 50 identified Medical Informatics MeSH terms are rarely assigned together to the same document and are almost exclusively paired with a non-Medical Informatics MeSH term, suggesting a strong interdisciplinary trend. Trends in citations, journals, and MeSH categories of Medical Informatics output for the 20-year period are summarized. Average impact factor scores and weighted average impact factor scores increased over the 20-year period with two notable growth periods. There is a steadily growing presence and increasing visibility of Medical Informatics literature over the years. Patterns in research output that seem to characterize the historic trends and current components of the field of Medical Informatics suggest it may be a maturing discipline, and highlight specific journals in which the Medical Informatics literature appears most frequently, including general Medical journals as well as Informatics-specific journals.

    : We survey the "evolution" of the field of Medical Informatics by describing trends in volume(quantity) of Medical Informatics-indexed publications, identifying major journals of publication and their focus areas and presenting trends in impact factor scores during the 1994-2003 period. Changes in total impact-scores suggest an increasing trend of publication in journals of higher impact.

    Abstract As is the case for environmental, ecological, astronomical, and other sciences, Medical practice and research finds itself in a tsunami of data. This data deluge, due primarily to the introduction of digitalization in routine Medical care and Medical research, affords the opportunity for improved patient care and scientific discovery. Medical Informatics is the subdiscipline of medicine created to make greater use of information in order to improve healthcare. The 4 areas of Medical Informatics research (information access, structure, analysis, and interaction) are used as a framework to discuss the overlap in information needs of comparative effectiveness research and potential contributions of Medical Informatics. Examples of progress from the Medical Informatics literature and the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System are provided.
