METHODS We searched (1) MEDLINE, CAB Alt HealthWatch, BIOSIS previews, Science Citation Index, EMBASE, and Social Science Citation Index from inception through October 2007; (2) Chinese Medical Database, China Hospital Knowledge, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and China Traditional Chinese Medicine Database from inception through June 2005; and (3) the Medical Libraries of Beijing and Nanjing Universities. Clinical studies published in English and Chinese including participants with established CVD or CVDRF were included. Data were extracted in a standardized manner; 2 independent investigators assessed methodological quality, including the Jadad score for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). RESULTS Twenty-nine studies met inclusion criteria: 9 RCTs, 14 nonrandomized studies, and 6 observational trials. Three studies examined subjects with coronary heart disease, 5 in subjects with heart failure, and 10 in heterogeneous populations that included those with CVD. Eleven studies examined subjects with CVDRF (hypertension, dyslipidemia, impaired glucose metabolism). Study duration ranged from 8 weeks to 3 years. Most studies included fewer than 100 subjects (range, 5–207). Six of 9 RCTs were of adequate quality (Jadad ≥ 3). Most studies reported improvements with tai chi, including blood pressure reductions and increases in exercise capacity. No adverse effects were reported. CONCLUSION Preliminary evidence suggests that tai chi exercise may be a beneficial adjunctive therapy for some patients with CVD and CVDRF. Further research is needed.

Five randomized controlled trials were of adequate quality (Jadad score ≥3). No adverse effects were reported. Tai chi exercise may reduce BP and serve as a practical, nonpharmacologic adjunct to conventional hypertension management.

The team identified tutorial topics, determined common design features, and assessed elements of active learning in library-created tutorials; the team also generated a list of third-party tutorials to which Medical Libraries link. This article updates the earlier study, describing changes and trends in tutorial content and design on Medical Libraries' Web sites; the project team plans to continue to track trends in tutorial development by repeating this study annually.

According to the Instructional Technologies Committee of the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), web tutorials should include interactive exercises such as simulations or quizzes [1]. These activities encourage active learning and allow students to respond to what is taught, while self-assessing their own learning. Web tutorials should also provide a way to contact a librarian for questions or to give feedback about the tutorial's design or usefulness [1]. While previous studies have looked for examples of active learning in tutorials, they did not focus on academic Medical Libraries [2, 3]. Dewald analyzed 20 tutorials (19 for post-secondary education; 1 for kindergarten–8th grade students) selected by the Research Committee of the Library Instruction Round Table of the American Library Association [3]. Hrycaj examined 65 tutorials created by member Libraries of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) [2]. Both studies emphasized the importance of including active learning in tutorials. Examples of active learning described in these articles include quizzes at the end of tutorial modules, questions integrated into the tutorial modules, exercises used in tutorial modules, quizzes requiring the use of separate browser windows, or options for sending quiz results to an instructor [2]. Dewald's 1999 study found that 37% of the tutorials included active learning features, and Hrycaj's 2005 study found that 60% of the tutorials contained some element of active learning. The purpose of the current project was to identify and analyze freely available online tutorials created by Medical Libraries. The project team was interested in identifying the topics of tutorials created by Medical Libraries, determining common design features used in tutorials, and assessing elements of active learning in the identified library-created tutorials. The team also generated a list of third-party tutorials to which Libraries link.

Medical Reference Services Quarterly, 2003Co-Authors: Cheryl R DeeAbstract:An increasing number of Medical school Libraries offer chat service to provide immediate, high quality information at the time and point of need to students, faculty, staff, and health care professionals. Part 2 of Chat Reference Service in Medical Libraries presents a snapshot of the current trends in chat reference service in Medical school Libraries. In late 2002, 25 (21%) Medical school Libraries provided chat reference. Trends in chat reference services in Medical school Libraries were compiled from an exploration of Medical school library Web sites and informal correspondence from Medical school library personnel. Many Medical Libraries are actively investigating and planning new chat reference services, while others have decided not to pursue chat reference at this time. Anecdotal comments from Medical school library staff provide insights into chat reference service.
