Those Metadata are, however, encoded in various different Schemas and in different serialization formats, which makes it hard to automatically extract and interpret. The primary reason of the difficulty is the lack of interpretation rules for Metadata, e.g., lack of definition of Metadata vocabularies, lack of definition of encoding syntax and so forth. This paper proposes a model to support interpretation of embedded Metadata without formal Schema by linking a Metadata instance to DCMI Description Set Profiles (DSP). An XPath Expression addresses a Metadata instance encoded in HTML, and DSP define Metadata Schema. We propose extending DSP to include XPath for linking a Metadata instance to a Metadata Schema. This paper also shows an experimental system that extracts Metadata using extended DSP

Building interoperable Metadata Schemas has been a main topic of the Dublin Core since its early days. It is important to make use of existing Metadata Schemas to develop a new Schema in order to minimize newly defined Metadata vocabularies, which is how DCMI has developed. In order to improve the usability of existing Metadata Schemas for developing new Schemas, it is important to improve the usability of the publicly available, online information about Metadata Schemas. This study aimed to develop a technology to help Metadata Schema designers find useful Metadata Schemas and use them for the new Metadata Schema development. Key concepts used in this study are Description Set Profiles (DSP) as a formal basis of Metadata Schema and Linked Open Data (LOD) as a framework to connect Metadata Schema resources. In this paper, we discuss a search methodology to find useful Metadata terms for a given application domain. We propose to apply two approaches - (1) search Metadata terms and description set profiles using resources registered at Schema registries and the like, and (2) search Metadata terms using Metadata instances included in a LOD dataset. We created a search scenario for Metadata Schema of fictions and applied the methodology to evaluate the methodology. This paper shows the methodology and its evaluation using the scenario after discussion of general requirements analysis and guidelines for Metadata Schema development.

A task-centric model for archival Metadata Schema mapping based on the records lifecycle

It is crucial to select and/or combine Metadata standards in accordance with requirements in an application domain and in the records lifecycle. Based on our previous research in which we have clarified the features of major standard Metadata element sets from a viewpoint of the records lifecycle, this paper proposes a model to help create mappings among the Metadata element sets. In this study, we first propose a Task Model to clarify tasks in the records lifecycle and to categorise Metadata elements using tasks. Then, this paper proposes to use 5W1H (Who, What, Why, When, Where and How) categories to classify descriptive elements of Metadata standards in order to help mapping the elements among Metadata standards. In this study, we applied the Task Model and 5W1H categorisation to a set of element sets taken from a number of Metadata standards, e.g., AGRkMS, EAD, OAIS, and PREMIS, and created a mapping table among the standards.

The goal of this project is to build a Metadata Schema registry to support sharing of Metadata Schemas on the Internet and promote reuse of Metadata Schemas and Metadata interoperability. The registry is designed based on the Singapore Framework. Partners in this project include several major memory organizations, research institutions, and private sector entities in Japan. This project has collected several Metadata Schemas from the partners and converted them into the formal project Schema based on RDF. This report first presents the background and goal of the project, and then the requirements and design of the registry system named Meta-Bridge.

Guidelines like FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability) ensures better use-cases for the data. Proposals like Metadata applications profiles provide mechanisms to express constraints and Metadata Schema of the datasets. In order to provide Ethical, Legal, and Social Aspects/Implications (ELSA/ELSI), datasets require more than the application profiles. Along with the Schema, expressing privacy aspects of the data and constraints on rights and licenses also ensures proper ELSI. A good dataset profile needs validation rules provided in actionable formats and with human-readable documentation. A sample data will help the consumers to streamline the process of adapting the datasets. Different solutions exist to express these various components required to represent the datasets, such as DCAT to express the datasets, ShEx, and SHACL to provide validation for datasets, Datapackage for providing the Schema for tabular data, DCAP for creating Metadata application profiles, vocabularies like DPV to provide privacy constraints and ORDL to express rights of datasets. However, there is no simplified mechanism to interlink and distinguish these various elements in an actionable format. This research is intended to devise a mechanism to express a complete profile package for datasets, as ‘MetaProfile.’ MetaProfile is intended to cover a dataset’s profile with privacy, rights, and other essential components to ensure ELSI and interoperability of datasets. This research’s expected outcome is to provide a format and vocabulary to fill in the gaps of existing solutions for interlinking and notating different components of a profile.

Towards a 21st Century Metadata Infrastructure Supporting the Creation, Preservation and Use of Trustworthy Records: Developing the InterPARES 2 Metadata Schema Registry

This infrastructure can then also be used to provide specifications and an implementation environment for automated tools to assist archivists in the ongoing management of trustworthy records and Metadata, and users in the identification, retrieval, and manipulation of those records and Metadata. The paper discusses this need in the context of the development by the International research on Permanent Authentic Records in Electronic Systems (InterPARES 2) Description Cross-Domain Group of a Metadata Schema registry. This registry is a prototype resource designed to assist archivists and records creators in multiple domains in developing and assessing their own and other communities’ Metadata infrastructures. The paper concludes by identifying two contested issues that are surfaced and how they are being confronted by this work: one of these is a definitional issue that relates to how to delineate the concept of archival description in the face of competing notions of “Metadata.” The other is the extent to which both the life cycle and continuum worldviews and associated activities can or should be supported, reconciled or even re-thought through the conceptual and analytical approach that is embedded in the Metadata Schema registry.

Utilizing Systems Development Methods in Archival Systems Research: Building a Metadata Schema Registry
Archival Science, 2004Co-Authors: Joanne Evans, Nadav RoucheAbstract:This paper discusses the use of systems development research methods in the context of ongoing research that is formulating a specification for a Metadata Schema registry. The paper extrapolates from this discussion how such methods can be utilized in archival systems research and how such an approach differs from commercial systems engineering. In particular, the paper suggests that adopting a user-centred prototyping approach in a research context allows for exploration of the interplay between theory and practice, advancing the practice, while also offering new insights into theoretical concepts. It argues that these research methods are of increasing interest to the archival profession in order to conceptualise and realise the tools necessary to support recordkeeping and archival processes in digital environments.

A Metadata-driven approach to data repository design

Metadata is collected automatically during the submission process whenever possible and is registered with DataCite in accordance with their current Metadata Schema, in exchange for a persistent digital object identifier. Two examples of data preview are illustrated, including the demonstration of a method for integration with commercial software that confers rich domain-specific data analytics without introducing customisation into the repository itself.
