An olfactometer was used to check the attractiveness of the parasitoid to Hexane extract (kairomone) of its host that could be used in conjunction with releases of natural enemies. Female wasps are attracted in high numbers to the kairomone, compared with males. Respective rates of 94.3 and 22.3% are reported. In the control (no kairomone was used), the corresponding figures are 5.7 and 3.3%.

Interaction between Apanteles ruficrus Hal. and Meteorus rubens Nees on larvae on Agrotis ipsilon (Hufn.)

GesrahaAbstract:The two internal gregarious parasitoids Apanteles ruficrus Hal. and Meteorus rubens Nees attack larvae of Agrotis ipsilon (Hufn.) and they naturally co-exist during the period from end April to end May. The present paper deals with the interaction between these two parasitoids. First and late 6th instar (3-day old) of A. ipsilon never attacked by either A. ruficrus or M. rubens. No sort of direct competition between the two parasitoids existed around 2nd, 3rd and early 6th instars, because of the unique instar attacked by each. Fourth instar larva is adequate for both parasitic species, but when being exposed simultaneously to females of both species, no progeny are obtained owing to the early death of the host. Fifth instar of Agrotis larva is highly preferable for Meteorus compared to Apanteles and thus, when being exposed simultaneously, the survivor is Meteorus. In nature the two parasitic species were never obtained together from a 4th instar larva, and no Apanteles individuals were secured from 5th instar larvae.

RagaeiAbstract:The effect of the pathogen Bacillus thuringiensis on the larval parasite Meteorus laeviventris, associated with Agrotis ypsilon, was studied. The biology of the parasite showed to be affected in some aspects when its host larvae were fed on a diet containing B. thuringiensis. A significant reduction in reproductive potential and longevity occurred together with retardation in development. The effect of the exotoxin (thuringiensin) on the parasite has been also demonstrated.

Description and natural history of the first micropterous Meteorus species: M. orocrambivorus sp. n. (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Euphorinae), endemic to New Zealand

Berry, Claudio De SassiAbstract:Wing reduction is well known in the cyclostome lineage of Braconidae, but very unusual in non-cyclostome groups. A new species from New Zealand, Meteorus orocrambivorus, the first micropterous species of the non-cyclostome and cosmopolitan genus Meteorus, is described. Phylogenetic analysis places it close to M. versicolor, a macropterous parasitoid of macrolepidoptera. Details about its host relationships, plant associations and habitat suggest that the necessity of succeeding in cryptic environments may explain the wing modification. A possible case of Batesian mimicry with ants could explain the extreme sexual dimorphism.

Meteorus Haliday (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) parasitoids of Pyralidae: description and biology of two new species and first record of Meteorus desmiae Zitani, 1998 from Ecuador

ShawAbstract:Two new Ecuadorian wasp species attacking pyralid larvae are described: Meteorus albisericus and Meteorus pyralivorus, as well as a new Ecuadorian distribution record for Meteorus desmiae Zitani, another pyralid parasitoid, previously known from Costa Rica and Colombia. The hosts of M. albisericus were found feeding on Clibadium glabrescens S. F. Blake (Asteraceae), Diplazium costale var. robustum (Sodiro) Stolze (Dryopteridaceae), Brunellia tomentosa Bonpl. (Brunelliaceae) and Cavendishia sp. Lindl. (Ericaceae). Chusquea scandens Kunth (Poaceae) is the associated plant for M. pyralivorus hosts. Meteorus. albisericus is the first Neotropical Meteorus species with dorsopes whose biology is known. Neotropical species of Meteorus Haliday (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Meteorinae) parasitizing Arctiinae (Lepidoptera: Noctuoidea: Erebidae).

The first biological record for M. cecavorum Aguirre & Shaw as well as its cocoon description is reported. A comprehensive key for the Neotropical Meteorus attacking Arctiinae is provided. A total of nine Meteorus species have been reared from Arctiinae in the Neotropical Region. Six of them are gregarious and three solitary. The biological information about host and food plants concurs with the hypothesis of specialist parasitoids preferring "nasty" caterpillars.

Ten new species of Meteorus (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) from Ecuador reared at the Yanayacu Biological Center for Creative Studies

Specimens were reared from lepidopteran larvae collected in the northeastern Andes of Ecuador, a hotspot of global diversity. The new species described and illustrated are: M. bustamanteorum, M. caritatis, M. horologium, M. imaginatus, M. luteus, M. margarita, M. oreo, M. porcatus, M. quasifabatus, and M. zitaniae. The biology of these species has also been observed: reared as single wasp emergences are M. caritatis, M. imaginatus, M. luteus, and M. oreo. The majority of the descriptions are of gregarious wasp rearings, which occur within M. bustamanteorum, M. horologium, M. margarita, M. porcatus, M. quasifabatus, and M. zitaniae. There is a large diversity of taxa used for oviposition; four species were reared from Arctiidae caterpillars, two from Nymphalidae, and one each from Apatelodidae, Limacodidae, Megalopygidae, and Noctuidae. The host data for the new species of Meteorus shows a strong correlation between type of host defense and whether development yields a solitary or gregarious wasp. All of the Meteorus wasps collected from this region have been new species, which highlights the enormous biodiversity and importance of describing new species in the neotropics.

Taxonomic revision and morphometric analysis of Meteorus Haliday, 1835 (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Meteorinae) from Colombia

Its species are koinobiont endoparasitoids that use Coleoptera and Lepidoptera caterpillars as hosts, some of them are important agricultural pests. The Meteorus fauna is better known for the Palearctic, Nearctic, Afrotropical and Australian regions, but these wasps are poorly studied in the Neotropical region. From Colombia only two species have been previously reported. The goals of this paper are to study the taxonomic diversity of Meteorus from Colombia and to test the taxonomic value of morphometric characters used to discriminate species. The taxonomic value of the morphometric traits is tested using discriminant function analysis, principal components analysis and graphical exploration of data. A taxonomic key and diagnoses for the species are presented. Nineteen species are newly described: M. amazonensis sp. nov., M. andreae sp. nov., M. antioquensis sp. nov., M. boyacensis sp. nov., M. calimai sp. nov., M. caquetensis sp. nov., M. cecavorum sp. nov., M. chingazensis sp. nov., M. dixi sp. nov., M. farallonensis sp. nov., M. guacharensis sp. nov., M. guineverae sp. nov., M. huilensis sp. nov., M. iguaquensis sp. nov., M. jerodi sp. nov., M. magdalensis sp. nov., M. muiscai sp. nov., M. quimbayensis sp. nov., M. santanderensis sp. nov. Sixteen species are new records for Colombia: M. alejandromasisi Zitani, M. arizonensis Muesebeck, M. corniculatus Zitani, M. desmiae Zitani, M. dimidiatus (Cresson), M. dos Zitani, M. mariamartae Zitani, M. megalops Zitani, M. oviedoi Shaw & Nishida, M. papiliovorus Zitani, M. pseudodimidiatus Zitani, M. rogerblancoi Zitani, M. rugonasus Shaw & Jones, M. townsendi Muesebeck, M. uno Zitani, M. yamijuanum Zitani. Most of the new species are found in Andean forests above 2000 m. New hosts are recorded for M. alejandromasisi, M. laphygmae, M. papiliovorus and M. rubens. The morphometric traits of the head are the most useful for separating species. In contrast, the wings traits are very labile and species differentiation with only wing characters is difficult.

Responses of Meteorus Versicolor Wesm. (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) to the Population Density of Tephrina Arenacearia Den. et Schiff. (Lepidoptera. Geomatridae)

We studied the behavioral responses of this braconid to changes the number of hosts in laboratory conditions. It was revealed that this parasitoid is distributed proportionally to host population density. M. versicolor can parasitize both the single and accumulated larvae of the host.
