Chemical analyses of Roman wall paintings recently found in Paphos, Cyprus: The complementarity of archaeological and chemical studies

VieillescazesAbstract:The ancient city of Nea (New) Paphos lies on the south-western coast of Cyprus. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1980. Archaeological surveys and excavations led on Fabrika Hill, on the north-east acropolis of the ancient city of Hellenistic and Roman Paphos revealed the existence of important Hellenistic quarries, water supplies and houses of the same period. An important Roman building was found, with traces of wall paintings in different spaces. In order to confirm the relative chronology of this Roman building given by archaeological stratigraphic and stylistic analyses, as well as technical observations, twenty-five samples of different kinds of wall paintings were collected for chemical analyses of inorganic and/or organic constitutive materials. Frescoes have been identified and all the pigments were of Mineral Origin. At least two different phases in the Roman building on the northern part of the site and another probably older kind of wall painting on the southern part have been successfully differentiated.

The detection and analysis of particulates in municipal water supplies by transmission electron microscopy

KloskaAbstract:Abstract The analysis of particulates in municipal water supplies utilizing the electron microscope and a simple drop transfer technique is illustrated in a study of particulates in the Albuquerque, New Mexico water distribution system. The majority of particles are observed to be crystalline and to have a Mineral Origin. Asbestos fibers are identified and measured to be less concentrated than previously recorded for many other major cities in the United States, and there is no evidence of asbestos pick up in water that flows through asbestos-cement pipe in the Albuquerque water distribution system.

Overview of Covid-19; its prevention and management in the light of Unani medicine.
The Science of the total environment, 2020Co-Authors: Sadia Nikhat, Mohammad FazilAbstract:Since December 2019, a respiratory pandemic named as coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) caused by a new coronavirus named as SARS-CoV-2, has taken the world by storm. The symptoms are fever, malaise, and cough which resolve in a few days in most cases; but may progress to respiratory distress and organ failure. Transmission is through droplet infection or fomites, but other modes such as airborne transmission and oro-fecal transmission are also speculated. Research is underway to develop effective vaccines and medicines for the disease. In such a scenario, we present the measures described in Unani system of medicine for health protection during epidemics. Unani is a traditional system of medicine developed during the middle ages, which employs natural drugs of herbal, animal and Mineral Origin for treatment. In Unani medicine, during an epidemic, apart from isolation and quarantine, three measures are of utmost importance, (i) purification of surroundings using certain herbal drugs as fumigants or sprays, (ii) health promotion and immune-modulation, and (iii) use of health-protecting drugs and symptom-specific drugs. Drugs such as loban (Styrax benzoides W. G. Craib), sandroos (Hymenaea verrucosa Gaertn.) za'fran (Crocus sativus L.), vinegar etc. are prescribed in various forms. Scientific researches on these drugs reveal the presence of a number of pharmacologically active substances, which may provide a new insight into the management of infections and epidemics.
