A taxonomic review of the fungal-inhabiting plant bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae: Cylapinae) from the Korean Peninsula

The tribe Bothriomirini Kirkaldy is recognized for the first time based on the specimens of Bothriomiris gotohi Yasunaga, 2000. The genera Fulvius and Peritropis are also first reported with discoveries of F. ussuriensis Kerzhner, 1973, F. nozawai Yasunaga & Wolski, 2017, and P. advena Kerzhner, 1973. The record of genus Punctifulvius is confirmed on the basis of the species of Punctifulvius kerzhneri Schmitz, 1978. The variable character of F. nozawai between populations and ambiguous character of B. gotohi are discussed. The morphological information including diagnosis and brief biology of each species are presented. COI barcoding of plant bugs (Insecta: Hemiptera: Miridae).
PeerJ, 2018Co-Authors: Junggon Kim, Sunghoon JungAbstract:The family Miridae is the most diverse and one of the most economically important groups in Heteroptera. However, identification of mirid species on the basis of morphology is difficult and time-consuming. In the present study, we evaluated the effectiveness of COI barcoding for 123 species of plant bugs in seven subfamilies. With the exception of three Apolygus species-A. lucorum, A. spinolae, and A. watajii (subfamily Mirinae)-each of the investigated species possessed a unique COI sequence. The average minimum interspecific genetic distance of congeners was approximately 37 times higher than the average maximum intraspecific genetic distance, indicating a significant barcoding gap. Despite having distinct morphological characters, A. lucorum, A. spinolae, and A. watajii mixed and clustered together, suggesting taxonomic revision. Our findings indicate that COI barcoding represents a valuable identification tool for Miridae and can be economically viable in a variety of scientific research fields.

Sex pheromone of the mullein bug,Campylomma verbasci (Meyer) (Heteroptera: Miridae).

BordenAbstract:The first known sex pheromone for the family Miridae is reported for the mullein bug,Campylomma verbasci (Meyer) (Heteroptera: Miridae). Extracts of and Porapak Q-trapped volatiles from females were attractive to males in field bioassays. Butyl butyrate and hexyl butyrate were the predominant compounds in the females' volatiles, but these compounds previously had been found to be inactive when released alone or in combination. Butyl butyrate in combination with an isolated trace chemical, (E)-crotyl butyrate (which was inactive alone), rivaled the attraction elicited by five live females. When synthetic butyl butyrate and (E)-crotyl butyrate in a 16: 1 ratio were released at 91 or 183 μg/day, they comprised an effective attractant for male bugs.
