motorcycles as a full Mode of Transportation
Transportation Research Record, 2002Co-Authors: Marcus WiganAbstract:Motorcycles usually are treated solely on the basis of their safety characteristics and very rarely as a Mode of Transportation with benefits and costs, placing safety issues in a full Transportation context. The standard Transportation issues of traffic flow effects, driving cycles, rider Mode choice behaviors, and economic evaluation have largely been neglected for motorcycles. A survey of existing and new Australian and other data was undertaken and the data assessed, along with topics covered in a more comprehensive Australian study. Geographic information system techniques for integrating motorcycle flow estimation and crash data were also assessed. Attitudinal work shows a strong propensity for motorcycle owners to enjoy not only their motorcycle travel but all other forms of travel more so than those who do not have access to motorcycles. Practical policy directions are proposed to bring motorcycles onto an equal information and analysis footing as other Modes, for a coherent treatment of road capacity management and for using vulnerable road users as an anchor in an integrated policy and planning context.

Walking is treated here as a full Transportation Mode that both genders use. Significant gender differences are disguised by combining cycling and walking into a single nonmotorized Transportation Mode. New data derived from Australian travel surveys are presented, and the relative importance of walking to other transport Modes is illustrated in terms of the fractions of trips and of travel time.

Methods: During the period between January and February 2006, telephone interviews were conducted with 2506 randomly selected urban residents aged 18 years or older in the 8 districts of Beijing, using a multiple stratified random sampling technique. of the selected individuals, 1024 (40.86%) members of the workforce were subsequently tested for biomarkers (ie, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)). Multiple logistic regression Modelling was used, adjusted for potential confounders. Results: The probability of dyslipidaemia in workers who travel to work by bus, car or taxi is higher than that of workers who walk to work, with prevalence odds ratios (PORs) of 1.99 (95% CI 1.33 to 2.97) and 2.21 (95% CI 1.28 to 3.84), respectively. There is no significant difference in the risk of experiencing dyslipidaemia when workers who ride bicycles are compared with those who walk to work (POR = 1.22, 95% CI 0.83 to 1.78). Conclusions: These findings indicate that Modes of Transportation to work are significantly associated with the prevalence of dyslipidaemia. Prevention education should be emphasised among higher-risk people who usually go to work by car, bus or taxi.

Preventive Medicine, 2008Co-Authors: Sylvia Titze, Willibald J Stronegger, Susanne JanschitzAbstract:OBJECTIVE: To determine the association of built-environment, social-environment, and personal-level factors with bicycling for Transportation, among adult city dwellers. METHOD: Survey of a representative sample of 1000 inhabitants of the city of Graz, Austria, using a computer-assisted telephone interview addressing cycling behavior and associated personal, social and environmental factors. RESULTS: The prevalence of biking for Transportation was 22.5%. After adjustment for gender, age, education, physical activity level and distance from home to destination, cycling was positively associated with the presence of bike lane connectivity (OR=2.09) and social support/Modeling (OR=1.62), and negatively associated with the perceived barriers of "physical discomfort" (OR=0.49) and "an impractical transport Mode" (OR=0.50). Analysis of interactions indicated that the effect of the perceived benefit of "rapidity" was stronger in physically active persons than inactive individuals, and the effect of the perceived barrier of "an impractical Mode of Transportation" was stronger among women than men. CONCLUSION: In addition to cycling-related social support and perceived benefits and barriers, bike lane connectivity may be an important determinant of cycling as a means of Transportation among adult city dwellers.

Policies to Support the Integration of Autonomous Vehicles

The movement towards autonomous vehicles has the potential to have profound impacts on urban infrastructure. As personal cars became the primary Mode of Transportation, cities sprawled outward and reallocated large amounts of the built environment to highways, roads, and parking lots. When autonomous vehicles are widely adopted, Transportation infrastructure needs will change, the space required for parking and movement of vehicles can be reduced, and part of the infrastructure used currently for personal vehicles can be repurposed for active Transportation facilities and infill development. The policies enacted by the federal, state, and local governments will largely dictate how the authors allow autonomous vehicle to shape built environments. Most of the Federal and State laws and legal precedent focus on the issues of testing and liability around allowing driverless vehicles to operate on roadways. Little is currently being done at the local level to address legal frameworks for how to adopt and use this new Mode of Transportation. Unless there is a concerted effort to prepare for the potential effects of automated vehicles on cities, more immediate challenges that solely focus on meeting their demand for road space will supersede more long term implications for how autonomous vehicles will be effectively integrated into cities will be overlooked. This paper explores how cities can incorporate autonomous vehicles in a way that follows existing precedent and laws.

This makes pregnancy suitable for examining the plausible, but in the scientific literature still unclear, association between active Transportation and weight gain. We hypothesize that women continuing an active Mode of Transportation to work or school from pre- to early pregnancy will have a lower gestational weight gain (GWG) than those who change to a less active Mode of Transportation.
