An indoor trial was conducted to investigate whether a biofloc-based co-culture of Litopenaeus vannamei and Mugil cephalus generates synergistic effects at the level of water quality, animal production, and nutrient budgets relative to co-culture and/or biofloc based monoculture. Shrimp (0.50 ± 0.16 g) were randomly distributed in 12 fiberglass tanks (5 m3) at a density of 80 shrimp.m-3. Six tanks were operated as shrimp monoculture either without biofloc (M-only) or with bioflocs (M-biofloc). The other six tanks were operated as polyculture (Mugil cephalus size of 1.51 ± 0.02 g added at 10% stocking density of the shrimp biomass) either without biofloc (P-only) or with biofloc (P-biofloc). In all samples, PCBs were found in higher concentrations than OCPs. The highest concentrations of OCPs and PCBs were found in sea bass, and in Bizerte Lagoon. Concentrations of DDTs and PCBs detected in this study were generally comparable or slightly higher than those found in studies from other Mediterranean and non-Mediterranean regions subject to a high anthropogenic impact. ∑PCBs, ∑HCHs and HCB levels were negatively correlated with lipid content, while no such correlation was seen for ∑DDTs. A significant correlation between levels and length and between levels and weight existed only for ∑PCBs. The daily intake of PCBs and OCPs ingested by people living in Bizerte through the studied fish species was estimated and compared with those observed in other areas.

Antioxidant enzyme activities were lower in fish from the polluted site compared with fish from the reference site, suggesting deficiency of the antioxidant system to compensate for oxidative stress. DNA damage was higher in both fish species from the contaminated site indicating genotoxic effects. The liver histopathological analysis revealed alterations in fish from Bizerte Lagoon. Hepatocytes from both fish species featured extensive lipid-type vacuolation and membrane disruption. Results suggest that the selected biomarkers in both fish species are useful for the assessment of pollution impacts in coastal environments influenced by multiple pollution sources.

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of these compounds in marine fishes from Tunisia. The PBDE mean concentrations in fish from Bizerte Lagoon were 45.3 and 96.2 ng g−1 lw respectively in mullet and sea bass, while the concentrations of these compounds in mullet and sea bass from Mediterranean Sea were 7.80 and 27.9 ng g−1 lw respectively. MeO-PBDE concentrations in mullet and sea bass from Bizerte Lagoon ranged from 6.46 to 286 ng g−1 lw and from 49.4 to 798 ng g−1 lw respectively, while the concentrations of these compounds in mullet and sea bass from Mediterranean Sea ranged from 190 to 401 ng g−1 lw and from 353 to 578 ng g−1 lw respectively. The total PBDEs and total MeO-PBDEs concentration in fish from Bizerte Lagoon were similar or slightly lower than those reported for other species from other locations around the world.

According to sensory analysis, the aromatic extract obtained by simultaneous distillation and extraction (SDE) was representative of grey mullet odor. A total of 50 aroma compounds were identified and quantified in grey mullet. Aldehydes were qualitatively and quantitatively the most dominant volatiles in grey mullet. Aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) was used for the determination of aroma-active compounds of fish sample. A total of 29 aroma-active compounds were detected in aromatic extract of grey mullet, of which 24 were identified. On the basis of the flavor dilution (FD) factor, the most powerful aroma active compounds identified in the extract were (Z)-4-heptenal and nonanal, which were described as the strong cooked fish and green-fruity odor, respectively.

Hematological parameters (red blood cell, RBC; white blood cell, WBC; hemoglobin concentration, Hb; hematocrit, Hct; mean corpuscular volume, MCV; mean corpuscular hemoglobin, MCH; mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, MCHC; thrombocytes, TC), biometric indices (weight, total and fork length), and vanadium levels in muscles and organs (gills, liver, stomach and intestine) were determined. Statistical analyses showed significant differences in concentrations of vanadium of the analyzed tissue of M. cephalus and a positive relationship between vanadium concentration in the liver and some hematological parameters (RBC, Hb and Hct) and biometric indices. Our results underline the importance of fish blood parameters as sensitive indicators of toxic impact of environmental factors such as metals. This study, focusing on an ongoing topic, represents a valuable contribution to research concerning the monitoring and prevention of vanadium pollution in aquatic organisms and environments.

For this purpose 60 mullet caught in Faro Lake (Italy), were acclimatized and fed with commercial diet for 20 days prior to the start of experiment, which lasted 15 days. After acclimatization, fish were randomly divided into two equal groups: control group was fed with commercial pellets. Haematological profile on whole blood and sera was assessed, reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs), antioxidant barrier (OXY-ads) and thiol-antioxidant barrier (SHp) were immediately assessed by means of a UV spectrophotometer. Two-way repeated data analysis (ANOVA) showed significant changes only on Thrombocyte Count (TC). In the experimental group an increase in OXY-ads and SHp levels and a significant decrease of d-ROMs were observed after administration of GA.

Thus, the evaluation of parameters related to oxidative stress in fish, in first instance those showing the redox potential, is notable to characterize the environmental conditions. Short-term storage of samples is essential when blood must be transported from collection sites to laboratories. Therefore, excessive delays in processing might compromise the reliability of results. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of short-term storage time at +4 °C on total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and oxidative stress index (OSI) in flathead mullet ( Mugil cephalus ) serum. After blood collection, all sample were analyzed and the assays were repeated after 24, 48 and 72 h from sampling. results showed a significant effect of short-term storage on TOS and TAC ( P ≤ 0.0001), while the statistical significance of the linear regression study for these parameters was reduced as consequence of storage. These results highlight that the activities of oxidants and antioxidants in flathead mullet serum change during short-term storage at 4 °C and should be assesses as soon as possible from collection.

A total of fifteen fish (21.93 ± 2.03 cm fork length; 80.28 ± 21.32 g weight) was harvested from a Reservoir-Faro Lake, Messina (Italy). Immediately after capture blood samples was collected on all fish to evaluate haematological parameters, glucose and lactate levels. Then, all animals were transferred in tank and acclimated for a period of 15 days. After this acclimate period, on all fish blood samples were collected and the blood parameter were assessed again. Paired t-test, used to determine significant differences between blood parameters measured before and after acclimation, showed that after acclimation to captivity, there was significant reduction (P < 0.001) in red blood cell (RBC), Haematocrit (Hct), Haemoglobin concentration (Hgb), White Blood Cell Count (WBC). Lactate and total proteins values increased significantly after acclimation (P < 0.001 and P < 0.05, respectively), while glucose blood concentration decreased significantly (P < 0.001). The results of this study showed how haematological and biochemical parameters of the mullet change after acclimation to captivity. Resume : Reponse hematologique et biochimique de Mugil cephalus apres acclimatation a la captivite. Cette etude implique les repercussions de l'acclimatation a la captivite sur les parametres hematologiques et biochimiques du Mugil cephalus. Quinze poissons (longueur a la fourche: 21,93 ± 2,03 cm ; poids: 80,28 ± 21,32 g) ont ete preleves dans le lac Faro, Messine (Italie). Tout de suite apres la capture, des prelevements de sang ont ete recueillis de chaque poisson pour evaluer les parametres hematologiques et les niveaux de glucose et lactate. Ensuite, les animaux ont ete transferes dans des citernes et acclimates pendant 15 jours. Apres cette periode d'acclimatation, des prelevements de sang de chaque poisson ont ete recueillis pour evaluer les parametres hematologiques. Un test t apparie, utilise pour comparer les parametres hematologiques mesures avant et apres l'acclimatation, a montre qu'apres l'acclimatation a la captivite, s'il existe une reduction significative (P < 0,001) des globules rouges, de l'hematocrite, de la concentration en hemoglobine et du nombre des globules blancs, les valeurs de lactate et des proteines totales etaient significativement augmentees apres l'acclimatation (P < 0,001 and P < 0,05, respectivement), bien que la concentration de glucose dans le sang etait significativement diminuee (P < 0,001). Les resultats de cette etude ont montre comment les parametres hematologiques et biochimiques des mulets changent apres l'acclimatation a la captivite.

For this purpose, 45 mullet caught in Faro Lake (Italy) were acclimated and fed with commercial diet for 20 days prior to the start of experiments that lasted for 20 days. After acclimation, fish were divided into three equal groups and subjected to 25‰ (Group A), 45‰ (Group B) and 35‰ of salinity (Group C), respectively. Statistical analysis and linear regression showed a significant influence of salinity levels on erythrocyte, haemoglobin, haematocrit, leucocytes and trombocytes and on all biochemical parameters except on osmolarity. These results add to our understanding of the effects of salinity levels on the physiological and biochemical parameters of Mugil cephalus and, in particular, improve our ability to select salinity levels for optimal growth for aquaculture and breeding of this species.
