The new species are Pseudopecoeloides hickmani sp. n. from Pseudocaranx wrighti, Pseudopecoeloides lesteri sp. n. from Pseudocaranx dentex and Pseudocaranx wrighti, Pseudopecoeloides arripi sp. n. from Arripis georgianus, Pseudopecoeloides atherinomori sp. n. from Atherinonmorus ogilbyi and Pseudopecoeloides hafeezullahi sp. n. from Trachurus novaezealandiae. Pseudopecoeloides scomberi Hafeezullah, 1971, which was transferred to Opecoeloides Odhner, 1928 by Madhavi (1975), is reported from Scomberoides lysan and returned to Pseudopecoeloides. Pseudopecoeloides tenuis Yamaguti, 1940 is reported from a new host species, Priacanthus macracanthus. The Carangidae is the dominant host family for species of Pseudopecoeloides, followed by the Mullidae, Priacanthidae and Champsodontidae.

This is the second report of Dactylostomum Woolcock, 1935 from an Australian marine fish. The new species is distinguished by its elongate form, simple ventral sucker papillae and irregularly shaped ovary.

Opecoelidae (Digenea) in northern great barrier reef goatfishes (Perciformes: Mullidae).

CribbAbstract:The Opecoelidae (Digenea) of eight species of goatfishes (Perciformes: Mullidae) were studied off Lizard Island on the northern Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Host species included Mulloidichthys flavolineatus (Lacepede), M. vanicolensis (Valenciennes), Parupeneus barberinus (Lacepede), P. ciliatus (Lacepede), P. cyclostomus (Lacepede), P. indicus (Shaw), P. multifasciatus (Quoy & Gaimard), P. spilurus (Bleeker) and P. trifasciatus (Lacepede). Seven opecoelid species were found, of which Paropecoelus corneliae n. sp., Pa. leonae n. sp. and Pseudopecoeloides engeleri n. sp. are described as new. Paropecoelus elongatus (Ozaki, 1928), Pa. sogandaresi Pritchard, 1966 and Podocotyloides parupenei (Manter, 1963) are recorded and a description is provided for each. A second species of Pseudopecoeloides remains unnamed for want of sufficient morphological material. The seven species were distinguished on the basis of morphology and molecular analysis of 56 ITS2 rDNA sequences. Sequences differed by nine to 68 base pairs between species combinations recognised by morphology; no intraspecific variation was detected. Each opecoelid species infected between two and five mullid species, but none of the species has been found in non-mullid hosts. Every mullid species was infected with at least one species of opecoelid and Parupeneus ciliatus had all seven species. The Opecoelidae of GBR goatfishes are consistent with the typical pattern of stenoxenicity seen for trematodes of GBR fishes.

An exceptionally rich complex of Sanguinicolidae von Graff, 1907 (Platyhelminthes: Trematoda) from Siganidae, Labridae and Mullidae (Teleostei: Perciformes) from the Indo-West Pacific Region

CribbAbstract:We describe an unprecedented radiation of sanguinicolid blood flukes (Digenea: Sanguinicolidae) from two species of Labridae (Choerodon venustus and C. cauteroma), seven species of Mullidae (Mulloidichthys vanicolensis, Parupeneus barberinoides, P. barberinus, P. bifasciatus, P. cyclostomus, P. indicus and P. multifasciatus) and ten species of Siganidae (Siganus argenteus, S. corallinus, S. doliatus, S. fuscescens, S. lineatus, S. margaritiferus, S. puellus, S. punctatus, S. virgatus and S. vulpinus) from sites off Australia and Palau. The flukes were morphologically similar in having the combination of a long thread-like body, tegumental spines in lateral transverse rows, a vestigial oral sucker bearing concentric rows of fine spines, an H-shaped intestine, a cirrus-sac, a notch level with the male genital pore, a lateral or post-ovarian uterus, a uterine chamber and separate genital pores. These species are divided into two genera on the basis of testis number. Sanguinicolids from Siganus fuscescens have a single large testis between the intestinal bifurcation and the ovary and are placed in Ankistromeces Nolan & Cribb, 2004. Species from the remaining nine species of Siganidae, Labridae and Mullidae are placed in Phthinomita n. g.; these species have two testes, the anterior testis being large and between the intestinal bifurcation and the ovary whereas the small posterior testis is at the posterior end of the body and appears rudimentary or degenerate and probably non-functional. The second internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) from 29 host/parasite/location combinations (h/p/l) was sequenced together with that of Ankistromeces mariae Nolan & Cribb, 2004 for comparison. From 135 samples we found 19 distinct genotypes which were interpreted as representing at least that many species. Replicate sequences were obtained for 25 of 30 h/p/l combinations (including A. mariae); there was no intraspecific variation between replicates sequences for any of these. Interspecific variation ranged from 1–41 base differences (0.3–12.7% sequence divergence). The 19 putative species were difficult to recognise by morphological examination. We describe 13 new species; we do not describe (=name) six species characterised solely by molecular sequences and three putative species for which morphological data is available but for which molecular data is not. We have neither morphological nor molecular data for sanguinicolids harboured in five hosts species (Siganus margaritiferus, S. puellus, Choerodon cauteroma, Parupeneus indicus and P. multifasciatus) in which we have seen infections. Where host species were infected in different localities they almost always harboured distinct species. Some host species (for example, S. argenteus and S. lineatus from Lizard Island) harboured two or three species in a single geographical location. This suggests that, for parts of this system, parasite speciation has outstripped host speciation. Distance analysis of ITS2 showed species from each host family (Siganidae, Mullidae and Labridae) did not form monophyletic clades to the exclusion of species from other host families. However, a host defined clade was formed by the sequences from sanguinicolids from S. fuscescens.

A new species of Upeneus (Perciformes: Mullidae) from southern Japan

Upeneus itoui is most similar to the western Indian Ocean species, U. pori. The caudal-fin color pattern in fresh and preserved specimens of the two species is identical. However, U. itoui differs from U. pori in having less head and body depths, wider barbels, and a lower count of gill rakers.

Genetic relationship in goatfishes (Mullidae: Perciformes) of the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, with remarks on Suez Canal migrants
Scientia Marina, 1999Co-Authors: Daniel Golani, U. RitteAbstract:An electrophoretic examination of 21 presumptive loci was used to analyze the genetic relationship in the fish family Mullidae. The present study included seven species from the Red Sea and two from the Mediterranean. Two of the Red Sea species (Upeneus pori and U. moluccensis), which had colonized the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal, were also sampled in their new habitat. The electrophoretic results support the taxonomy which is based on morphomeristic measurements, with the exception of U. pori, the genetic distance of which with its congeneric species is at a level which is attributed to different genera. No discernible genetic difference was found between the populations of the colonizing species in both seas (D= 0.004 for U. moluccensis, D= 0.081 for U. pori), as well as between colonizing and non-colonizing species. The average heterozygosity of Mullidae is lower than the average known for other fishes.

Trophic relationships of colonizing and indigenous goatfishes (Mullidae) in the eastern Mediterranean with special emphasis on decapod crustaceans
Hydrobiologia, 1991Co-Authors: Daniel Golani, Bella GalilAbstract:Feeding habit and diet composition of two colonizing mullids, Upeneus asymmetricus and U. moluccensis , and two indigenous goatfish Mullus barbatus and M. surmuletus (Mullidae), in the eastern Mediterranean were investigated. The most important taxonomic group in the diet of all four species was the Decapoda which were identified to the specific level, enabling precise assessment of trophic partitioning. Leptochela pugnax , a pasiphaeid of Red Sea origin, was by far the most important prey of all mullids studied, which resulted in considerable trophic overlap between all of the species. Trophic separation does not play an important role in resource partitioning of the eastern Mediterranean mullids. Consequently, coexistence between colonizing and indigenous mullids is presumably achieved by spatial segregation.

Quantitative differences in the chemoreceptor systems in the barbels of two species of Mullidae (Mullus surmuletus and M. barbatus) with different bottom habitats
Marine Ecology Progress Series, 1997Co-Authors: Antoni Lombarte, Hugo AguirreAbstract:Qualitative and quantitative observations were made of the growth, distribution and density of external taste buds (TB) in the barbels of 2 phylogenetically close species of the Mullidae family (Perciformes: Teleostei) from the NW Mediterranean. Both species 11ve on the cont~nental shelf and have similar benthivorous feeding habits, but each prefers a different bottom habitat. Mullus surmuletus is typical of sandy and rocky bottoms, while Mullus barbatus is found over muddy bottoms and reaches to deeper waters than M surmuletus. The barbels of M, barbatus differ from those of M surmuletus in that they have a greater density and number of TBs, which are characteristically distnbuted in well-defined groups. These characteristics of A4 barbatus are associated with a greater sensitivity to chemical stimuli, as there is a compensatory relationship with the reduction of the visual field which occurs in muddy and deeper waters.

Spermatozoa Morphology of Goatfishes (Mullidae): Upeneus sulphureus

PavlovAbstract:— Spermatozoa morphology of sulphur goatfish Upeneus sulphureus is studied by the methods of scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The shapes of spermatozoon heads are compared in U. sulphureus , U. tragula , U. margarethae , and Parupeneus multifasciatus . The U. sulphureus spermatozoon is characterized by the oval head flattened on a side, a nucleus with a deep U-shaped fossa, coaxially located centrioles, and two mitochondrial sections in the midpiece. On the flattened side of the head, its apical end is slightly pointed and bent. Based on the spermatozoon head shape, U. tragula and U. margarethae differ from all representatives of the family Mullidae with described sperm morphology in strongly bent and pointed apical end of the spermatozoon head and a single mitochondrial section in the midpiece. The data on comparative spermatozoa morphology are discussed in connection with current phylogenetic schemes.

Gonadal condition, sperm motility, and initial stages of embryonic development in freckled goatfish Upeneus tragula (Mullidae)

Pavlov, Luong Thi Bich ThuanAbstract:Development of sex cells, sperm motility, and initial stages of embryonic development are described in a tropical representative of the family Mullidae, freckled goatfish Upeneus tragula, from the coastal zone of Vietnam. In Nha Trang Bay, the gonads in the majority of sexually mature females are at IV, IV–V, and VI–IV maturity stages over the entire year, and the type of oogenesis is continuous. Anomalous structure of oocytes is registered in 15% of investigated females. In Ha Long Bay, the gonads of almost all sexually mature females are at maturity stage II in December. In adult males, spermatozoa are the most numerous in elongated spermiducts. Based on computer-assisted analysis of motility of spermatozoa removed from a spermiduct and activated in marine water, sperm velocity reaches 53 μm/s in 1 min after activation, and the duration of progressive movements of spermatozoa does not exceed 5 min.

Gamete ultrastructure in two species of the genus Upeneus (Mullidae) from the South China Sea

PavlovAbstract:Ultrastructure of envelopes of ovulated oocytes and spermatozoon ultrastructure are described in two closely related species of the family Mullidae, Upeneus tragula and U. cf. margarethae . Oocyte envelope is represented by the thin zona radiata and weakly expressed chorion. The spermatozoon is characterized by the presence of elongated head with a pointed bend in its apical part and nuclear fossa reaching approximately 90% of the head length. The centriolar complex and basal part of the flagellum are located inside of the nuclear fossa.

Reproduction of freckled goatfish Upeneus tragula (Mullidae) in the coastal zone of Vietnam

Emel’yanova, Luong Thi Bich ThuanAbstract:Features of reproduction are described in the tropical representative of the family Mullidae freckled goatfish Upeneus tragula from southern Central Vietnam (Nha Trang Bay) and North Vietnam (Ha Long Bay). Sex ratios of the fishes (females: males) in Nha Trang and Ha Long bays are 0.93: 1 and 1.2: 1, respectively. In both bays, the body length-body weight relationship is not substantially different between the females and males. In Nha Trang Bay, the females reach sexual maturity by 10.2 cm fork length (50% of individuals), and the fishes spawn over the entire year. In a part of the population (on average, 23.5% of fishes), the interruptions in spawning not associated with a certain season of the year are registered. In Ha Long Bay, a distinct spawning interruption is observed in all fishes during winter.

Pavlov, Luong Thi Bich ThuanAbstract:Gonadal differentiation and development of sex cells are described in the tropical representative of the family Mullidae, manybar goatfish Parupeneus multifasciatus, using histological methods and observations of oocytes in vivo. Anatomical differentiation of the gonads is registered by approximately 5 cm fork length (FL) and 1.5 g body weight of the fish, and cytological differentiation (in the females) occurs by approximately 6 cm body length and 2.6 g body weight. In the ovaries of sexually mature females before spawning, oocytes of all phases and periods of development can be found. Based on the gonadal structure and frequency distribution of oocyte diameter, the type of oogenesis is continuous.
