  • does threat of mutually assured destruction produce quasi cooperation in the mackerel fishery
    Marine Policy, 2014
    Co-Authors: Rognvaldur Hannesson
    Abstract:

Abstract This paper uses a quarterly, game-theoretic model of the Northeast Atlantic mackerel to study the fishing strategies of five players: the EU, Norway, the Faeroe Islands, Iceland, and the international fishery on the high seas. Data on the spatial distribution of fish catches (1977–2011) are used to model changes in the distribution of the mackerel stock. The Nash equilibrium solutions predict a severe decimation of the stock through overfishing, either by parties (Iceland, the Faeroe Islands) that refuse to cooperate or by a general absence of cooperation. There is a wide discrepancy between this prediction and reality, as the stock seems, at most, only moderately overexploited, despite non-cooperation by Iceland and the Faeroe Islands. It is conjectured that these parties, and others, may engage in a degree of quasi-cooperation that falls somewhat short of full cooperation but avoids the extreme destruction of the Nash equilibrium. This tacit cooperation can be seen as being maintained by a mutually assured destruction of the fisheries of all parties in case they go to the logical extremes of non-cooperation.

  • So Dead and Bald Destroys the World: A Psychological Critique of Object Metamorphosis in \u3ci\u3eInfinite Jest\u3c/i\u3e\u27s Game of Eschaton
    DigitalCommons@University of Nebraska - Lincoln, 2016
    Co-Authors: Phillips R. Christian
    Abstract:

Do not underestimate objects! . . . It is impossible to overstress this: do not underestimate objects (Wallace 394). Even the most cursory reading of David Foster Wallace\u27s Infinite Jest reveals the importance of objects to this work. Objects affect and vigorously direct all the characters throughout, from the tennis balls being continuously squeezed by students at the elite Enfield Tennis Academy (ETA) to the veil Joelle van Dyne wears to the plethora of drugs being consumed and, most importantly, to the cartridge of James O. Incandenza\u27s final film, which is given the ultimate power of life and death over anyone unfortunate enough to view it. Yet, the twenty-two pages devoted to describing a single game of Eschaton--played by a group of pre-pubescent ETA students referred to as Combatants--most clearly expose how a simple object, or group of objects, can take on greater meaning and create devastating change for the individuals interacting with them. A standout moment, this game is described as a mash-up of Model U.N., tennis, and calculus . . . that ends in broken bones, tears, and hilarity (Holub). A psychological critique of the objects used during the Eschaton game reveals their metamorphosis from mere objects into Things that actively affect the Combatants and ultimately destroy this game of mutually assured destruction (MAD) while drastically altering the real world lives of all those involved

  • mutually assured destruction the cold war between viruses and natural killer cells
    Current Opinion in Virology, 2019
Co-Authors: Ayad Ali, Ivayla E Gyurova, Stephen N Waggoner
    Abstract:

Natural killer (NK) cells play a multitude of antiviral roles that are significant enough to provoke viral counterefforts to subvert their activity. As innate lymphocytes, NK cells provide a rapid source of pro-inflammatory antiviral cytokines and bring to bear cytolytic activities that are collectively meant to constrain viral replication and dissemination. Additionally, NK cells participate in adaptive immunity both by shaping virus-specific T-cell responses and by developing adaptive features themselves, including enhanced antibody-dependent effector functions. The relative importance of different functional activities of NK cells are poorly understood, thereby obfuscating clinical use of these cells. Here we focus on opposing efforts of NK cells and viruses to gain tactical superiority during infection.
