Occupational Therapy in Health Care, 2017Co-Authors: Randy P Mccombie, Meredith E AntanavageAbstract:This research examined the transition from Occupational Therapy Student to practicing Occupational therapist over the course of one's first year of professional employment, as recalled by a sample of Occupational therapists. Surveys were mailed to 500 Occupational therapists randomly selected from membership in the American Occupational Therapy Association resulting in 202 returned surveys. Median year of graduation was 1998, ranging from 1967 to 2014. In general, respondents indicated the transition was positive. Having a mentor was related to high job satisfaction and good clinical fit, while supervising an Occupational Therapy assistant and low self-confidence were viewed as negative impact factors. Recent graduates presented with lower ratings of a positive transition and higher ratings of likelihood of experiencing burnout and initial job stress than earlier graduates. Recommendations for improving the transition experience are presented.

Australian Health Review, 2017Co-Authors: Linda Furness, Alison Pighills, Wendy Ducat, Anna TynanAbstract:Expansion of Occupational Therapy education programs has resulted in increased Student numbers and demand on clinicians to host clinical placements while also maintaining the delivery of high-quality, safe clinical services to patients. Much of the research about innovative placement models, including Student contributions to service delivery, has been conducted in metropolitan areas. Therefore, there is a need to develop models that are suited to regional settings that face diversity of caseload, more generalised Occupational Therapy roles and variations in patient flow. The aim of the present study was to describe the initial application of the Calderdale Framework in Student education in a regional context and look at lessons learnt. The Calderdale Framework provided a structured, clinically governed process whereby Occupational therapists were able to determine which tasks could be allocated to Students and provided a framework to support Student training and competency development. The Calderdale Framework has been used successfully to implement allied health models involving professional skill sharing and delegation of tasks to allied health assistants, but it has not been used in clinical education. Pilot implementation of the Calderdale Framework showed that the model supports quality and safety of Student-provided Occupational Therapy services and that the teaching method provides a platform for Student skill development. These results warrant further investigation and are potentially transferrable to Student education in other health professions.

In order to provide the best services to individuals with mental health disorders, the Occupational Therapy profession must maintain and expand its involvement in this area of practice. The purpose of this paper is to explore the threats and opportunities to promote education and practice in mental health from a Student perspective. The authors reviewed the literature, distributed questionnaires, and conducted focus groups with Occupational Therapy Students at a southeastern university. Based on findings in the literature and of the focus groups with Students, the authors have drawn a list of suggestions to improve the visibility of Occupational Therapy in mental health care. These suggestions are for Occupational Therapy educational programs, mental health practitioners, AOTA, and state associations.

Test-retest reliability of a Student self-assessment of professional behaviors.
Occupational therapy in health care, 2002Co-Authors: Valerie A Carroll, Esther R Castro, Karen M Defranco, Rachel M Fazio, Laura L Williams, Rebecca A BartonAbstract:The test-retest reliability of the University of Indianapolis School of Occupational Therapy Student Self-Assessment for Professional Behaviors was investigated. Twenty-seven first year and 31 second year Students participated in the study. Results indicated that 31 (83.78%) of 37 academic questions answered by first year Students were significant for test-retest reliability and 6 (16.22%) of 37 questions were not significant at alpha level 0.05. Of the 74 combined academic and clinical questions answered by second year Students, 56 (75.68%) were significant for test-rest reliability and 18 (24.32%) were not significant at alpha level 0.05. To further examine results, 5 second year Students participated in a focus group. Focus group results revealed themes regarding tool impressions, individual differences, and question display. Findings emphasized areas for revision to enhance test-retest reliability of the self-assessment tool.
