  • early cretaceous origin of pollen feeding beetles insecta coleoptera Oedemeridae
    Cladistics, 2017
    Co-Authors: David Peris
    Abstract:

The taxonomic position of a new pollen-feeding fossil beetle from Spanish amber (late Albian, 105 Ma) is analysed. A phylogenetic analysis allows me to accommodate Darwinylus marcosi gen. et sp. nov. in the Polyphaga: Oedemeridae within current limits for the family, which clearly belongs in the subfamily Oedemerinae. It corresponds to the oldest definitive record for the family. Some autapomorphies, mainly in antennae, are observable in the fossil compared with extant members of the family. A discussion about these problematic characters and the evolution of the family is proposed.

  • the case of darwinylus marcosi insecta coleoptera Oedemeridae a cretaceous shift from a gymnosperm to an angiosperm pollinator mutualism
    Communicative & Integrative Biology, 2017
Co-Authors: David Peris, Conrad C Labandeira, Enrique Penalver, Xavier Delclos, Eduardo Barron, Ricardo Perezde La Fuente
    Abstract:

ABSTRACTAbundant gymnosperm pollen grains associated with the oedemerid beetle Darwinylus marcosi Peris, 2016 were found in Early Cretaceous amber from Spain. This discovery provides confirmatory evidence for a pollination mutualism during the mid Mesozoic for the family Oedemeridae (Coleoptera), which today is known to pollinate only angiosperms. As a result, this new record documents a lateral host-plant transfer from an earlier gymnosperm to a later angiosperm, indicating that pollination of the latter is a derived condition within Oedemeridae. This new fossil record exemplifies one of the 4 ecological-evolutionary pollinator cohorts now known to have existed during the global shift from a gymnosperm to an angiosperm dominated global flora. Currently, all direct evidence for pollination during the 35 million-year interval of the mid Cretaceous gymnosperm-to-angiosperm transition entails recognition of gymnosperm pollen grains on insect mouthparts and other body contact surfaces, while analogous records...

  • Annotated checklist of the false blister beetles (Coleoptera: Tenebrionoidea: Oedemeridae) from Iran.
    Zootaxa, 2017
Co-Authors: Hassan Ghahari, Xavier A Vazquez, Daniel Kubisz
    Abstract:

A checklist of Oedemeridae species recorded from Iran is given. A total of 48 species and subspecies are reported, of which two, Nacerdochroa caspia (Faldermann, 1836) and Oedemera ( Oedemera ) virescens virescens (Linnaeus, 1767), are recorded here for the first time from Iran. A total of 18 species (37,5%) are Iranian endemics. The most common chorotypes are Turanian (16 species; 33%), Turano-European (8 species; 17%), SW-Asiatic chorotype (7 species; 15%), Sindian (6 species; 13%) and Arabo-sindian (4 species, 8%).

  • chitona suturalis olivier 1811 en el centro de la peninsula iberica coleoptera Oedemeridae
    Boletín de la SEA, 2006
Co-Authors: Xavier A Vazquez, Juan Jesus De La Rosa
    Abstract:

Chitona suturalis (Olivier, 1811) is recorded in Toledo, Ciudad Real and Madrid provinces. The specimens were captured around inland salt lakes, on halophytes of the genus Limonium Mill.

  • nacerdes xanthochroa carniolica atlantica allemand 1993 nueva para la peninsula iberica coleoptera Oedemeridae
    2003
    Co-Authors: Xavier A Vazquez, Jose I Recalde
    Abstract:

Nacerdes (Xanthochroa) carniolica atlantica Allemand, 1993, new to the Iberian Peninsula (Coleoptera: Oedemeridae) Abstract: Nacerdes (Xanthochroa) carniolica atlantica Allemand, 1993, is recorded for the first time from the Iberian Peninsula (Sunbilla, Etxalar and Zugarramurdi, in Navarre). It differs from the typical form by the yellowish elytra with infuscate margins. New records of Nacerdes (Xanthochroa) carniolica carniolica (Gistl, 1834) in South-Pyrenean Navarre are also given.

  • Revision of the Southern African Oedemeridae (Coleoptera, Tenebrionoidea)
Mitteilungen aus dem Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin. Zoologisches Museum und Institut für Spezielle Zoologie (Berlin), 1996
    Co-Authors: Xavier A Vazquez
    Abstract:

A taxonomic revision of the Southern African members of the family Oedemeridae is presented. It is based on the examination of the type material of all previously described species in the region, as well as on almost 400 additional specimens. The genera Nacatrorus and Melananthoides are described as new to science. Seven of the twenty-eight species recorded in Southern Africa are described as new. Probosca maraisi, P. endroedyi, Ditylomorphus blasae, Ditylomorphula crinita, D. mecophallica, D. albalatei and D. espanyoli. A total of fourteen new combinations are proposed: Eobia fusciventris, Ditylomorphus inconstans, Ditylomorphula nigrimembris, Ditylomorphula subfasciata, Ditylomorphula marginipennis, and Nacatrorus hottentotus (transferred from Ananca), Alloxantha holoxantha and Colobostomoides marshalli (transferred from Sessinia), Microsessinia marshalli and Microsesssinia abdominalis (transferred from Asclerosibutia), Pseudohyperasclera vittaticollis (transferred from Ditylus), Afrochitona clarimaculata (transferred from Chitona), Apterosessinia longula (transferred from Pterosessinia), and Melananthoides senex (transferred from Melananthia). The genus Achitona SVIHLA, 1985 is proposed as new synonym of Anacerdochroa SVIHLA, 1985, and Sessinia vittatithorax BLAIR, 1926 as new synonym of Ditylus vittaticollis GERSTAECKER, 1871. Afrochitona, described as a subgenus of Chitona, is raised to generic rank, while Pterosessina, described as a separate genus, is regarded as a subgenus of Apterosessinia. The genera Alloxantha, Eobia and Pseudohyperasclera are recorded from the Afrotropical Region for the first time, while the genera Probosca, Ditylomorphus and Ditylomorphula are recorded from Southern Africa for the first time. Keys to the Southern African genera and species are given. All species are described, and all descriptions are accompanied by habitus and male and female genital illustrations, and distributions maps. Lectotypes for the following species are designated: Eobia fusciventris, Colobostomoides marshalli, Afrochitona clarimaculata, Ditylomorphus inconstans, Ditylomorphula subfasciata, D. marginipennis, Apterosessinia peringueyi, Melananthia costipennis, Microsessinia neavei, M, marshalli and M. terminalis.

  • coleoptera Oedemeridae pyrochroidae pythidae mycteridae
    1993
    Co-Authors: Xavier Vazquez A Albalate
