  • effectiveness of an Online knowledge Training and assessment Program for stop smoking practitioners
    Nicotine & Tobacco Research, 2012
Co-Authors: Leonie S Brose, Robert West, Susan Michie, Jennifer A M Kenyon, Andy Mcewen
    Abstract:

INTRODUCTION In English National Health Service (NHS) stop smoking services, stop smoking practitioners (SSPs) provide behavioral support and medication to support smokers wanting to quit. This study aimed to evaluate an evidence-based national Online knowledge Training Program for SSPs developed by the NHS Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training (NCSCT). METHODS Knowledge required to deliver effective stop smoking interventions was assessed using 25 multiple-choice questions drawn randomly from a common larger pool at baseline and after use of the Training Program in 778 consecutive users. Change in knowledge and association of this change with time spent on the Training were assessed. Baseline and change in knowledge of SSPs with different amounts of experience, prior Training, and time dedicated to smoking cessation were compared. RESULTS Knowledge improved from 64.4% correct to 77.7% (p < .001). Time spent on the Training predicted improvement. PreTraining knowledge scores differed with experience, prior Training, and time practicing. Training improved even the highest performing SSPs and minimized differences between groups. CONCLUSIONS Knowledge required to deliver effective stop smoking intervention is improved efficiently by using the NCSCT Online Training Program for English smoking cessation practitioners. SSPs with all levels of prior knowledge benefit.

  • evaluation of an Online Training Program in eating disorders for health professionals in australia
The Journal of Eating Disorders, 2015
Co-Authors: Rachel S Brownlow, Sarah Maguire, Adrienne Odell, Catia Diasdacosta, Stephen Touyz, Janice Russell
    Abstract:

Background Early detection and treatment of eating disorders is instrumental in positive health outcomes for this serious public health concern. As such, workforce development in screening, diagnosis and early treatment of eating disorders is needed. Research has demonstrated both high rates of failure to accurately diagnose and treat cases early and low levels of perceived access to Training in eating disorders by health professionals–representing an urgent need for clinician Training in this area. However, significant barriers to the access of evidence-based Training Programs exist, including availability, cost and time, particularly when large geographic distances are involved. Online learning presents a solution to workforce challenges, as it can be delivered anywhere, at a fraction of the cost of traditional Training, timing is user controlled, and a growing body of research is demonstrating it as effective as face-to-face Training. The Centre for Eating and Dieting Disorders in Australia has developed an Online Training Program In Eating Disorders, to educate health professionals in the nature, identification, assessment and management of eating disorders. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the ability of this Online learning course to improve clinician levels of knowledge, skill and confidence to treat eating disorders. As well as its effect on stigmatised beliefs about eating disorders known to effect treatment delivery.

  • evaluating the effectiveness of an evidence based Online Training Program for health professionals in eating disorders
The Journal of Eating Disorders, 2019
Co-Authors: Sarah Maguire, Michelle Cunich, Danielle Maloney
    Abstract:

Early detection and treatment are essential to ensuring the best possible health outcomes for people with eating disorders (EDs). However, low diagnostic accuracy and a lack of specific ED Training are common workforce challenges in Australia and internationally. Online learning provides a potential solution in facilitating the access to evidence-based Training Programs. The InsideOut Institute has developed the first Online clinical Training Program in EDs to assist with educating health professionals in the identification, assessment, and management of EDs. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Online Training Program, The Essentials, in mitigating barriers to health professionals treating patients with EDs. Pre and post Training questionnaires assessed participants’ attitudes, knowledge, and skills in relation to treating people with EDs. Demographic and work-related information (gender, discipline, work setting, practice length and remoteness) and participants’ ratings of the Online learning experience and satisfaction on completion were collected. The Wilcoxon signed rank test was applied to test for changes in learning outcomes before and after completion of the Program. A multivariate linear regression model was estimated for each of the learning outcomes with personal and work-related characteristics as covariates. Among 1813 health professionals who registered for The Essentials Program between 1 October 2013 and 31 July 2018, 1160 completed at least 80% of the five learning modules. There were significant improvements in confidence, knowledge, skills to treat EDs and a reduction in stigmatised beliefs among the 480 participants who completed both pre and post assessments. Results from the regression models suggest that psychologists, dieticians, and those working in rural areas were more willing to treat EDs after completing the Program. Additionally, those working in hospitals and regional or rural areas experienced the largest improvement in confidence for treating patients with EDs. The Essentials Program represents a new and effective way of meeting the educational needs of partaking health professionals working with ED patients. Greater investment in the development and testing of evidence-based Online Training Programs for EDs may help to address some of the considerable workforce development challenges in EDs.

  • e motional Training pilot study on a novel Online Training Program on social cognition for patients with schizophrenia
    Schizophrenia Research: Cognition, 2016
Co-Authors: Miriam Vazquezcampo, Yolanda Marono, Guillermo Lahera, Raimundo Mateos, Alejandro Garciacaballero
    Abstract:

Background: Patients with schizophrenia have deficits in social cognition (SC), a construct that includes emotion perception (EP), social perception (SP), theory of mind (ToM) and attributive style (AS). The aim of our study was to assess the applicability, identify potential problems and obtain preliminary data on the efficacy of a new Online Training Program on SC called e-Motional Training (ET®), which can be remotely administered and remotely supervised by a clinician. Materials and methods: A pre/post intervention pilot study was conducted with 21 patients with schizophrenia in the healthcare area of Ourense, Spain (12 patients were assigned to the intervention group and 9 in the control group). The control group received standard treatment (TAU) (occupational therapy and leisure group). The intervention group received TAU plus 12 sessions (1 hour per week) with ET® (including Training modules on emotional perception and a short animated cartoon for ToM and AS Training, including automated metacognitive feedback).Endpoints: EP (Ekman 60 Faces Test), ToM (Hinting Task, Faux Pas, Happe), AS (Ambiguous Intentions Hostility Questionnaire). Results: ET® was shown to be an understandable, viable and pleasant Program for the participants. After the intervention, statistically significant data (p < 0.05) were obtained for the EP, ToM and AS variables. Conclusion: ET® enables self-Training in SC and Online follow-up by the therapist, thereby covering the lack of Online intervention instruments validated for patients with SC deficits. Our preliminary results demonstrate the feasibility of ET® and its possible efficacy in improving emotion recognition, ToM and AS.
