Für eine Pseudoskabies sind insbesondere Landwirte, Veterinäre und Tierbesitzer besonders exponiert. Diese, i. d. R. selbstlimitierenden Erkrankungen werden oft nicht erkannt. Wichtige Milbenspezies wie Sarcoptes scabiei, Notoedres cati, Cheyletiella spp. , Dermanyssus gallinae, Ornithonyssus bacoti und Ophionyssus natricis können auf das menschliche Integument übergehen und dort Symptome hervorrufen. A few case reports show that this hematophagous mite species may also cause dermatitis in man. Having close body contact to small rodents is an important question for patients with pruritic dermatoses. The definitive diagnosis of this ectopara-sitosis requires the detection of the parasite, which is more likely to be found in the environment of its host (in the cages, in the litter or in corners or cracks of the living area) than on the hosts’ skin itself. A case of infestation with tropical rat mites in a family is reported here. Three mice that had been removed from the home two months before were the reservoir. The mites were detected in a room where the cage with the mice had been placed months ago. Treatment requires the eradication of the parasites on its hosts (by a veterinarian) and in the environment (by an exterminator) with adequate acaricides such as permethrin.

A few case reports show that this haematophagous mite species may also cause dermatitis in man. All developmental stages are exclusively bloodfeeder. Three children (4, 11 and 15 years old) of a family and a 23-year-old medical student were attacked by the Tropical rat mite. Prior to the consultation of our institution, the patients’ conditions had been diagnosed as allergic dermatitis of unclear origin and treated by several antiphlogistic agents, however without success. The conclusive diagnosis, Tropical rat mite dermatitis, was based on the identification of the arthropod Ornithonyssus bacoti in the flats of the patients (husbandry of gerbils, etc.). The diagnosis of a Rat mite dermatitis requires the detection of the parasite, which is more likely to be found in the environment of its host than on the hosts’ skin itself.

Verschiedene von Tieren stammende Milben können temporär den Menschen befallen und sollten daher als mögliche Ursache erythematöser Hautveränderungen, die zum Teil mit Juckreiz einhergehen und ätiologisch unklar erscheinen, Berücksichtigung finden. Besonders beruflich exponierte Personen, wie Landwirte, Veterinäre oder Tierbesitzer sind häufiger von Pseudoskabies infolge Milbeninfestation betroffen. Die Ursachen dieser meist selbstlimitierenden Dermatosen bleiben oft unerkannt. Anhand der Spezies Sarcoptes scabiei , Notoedres cati , Cheyletiella spp., Dermanyssus gallinae , Ornithonyssus bacoti , Ophionyssus natricis und Neotrombicula autumnalis werden die unterschiedlichen Möglichkeiten einer Infestation des Menschen durch humanpathogene Milben dargestellt.

FC‐45 Mites as newly emerging disease pathogens in rodents and human beings

Consequently, these arthropods may be responsible for pruritic skin reactions that are often misdiagnosed. Mite dermatitis caused by the tropical rat mite Ornithonyssus bacoti occurs in several small mammals and rodents under tropical and temperate climatic conditions. According to various observations in Germany, O. bacoti appears in wild rodents more frequently than previously thought. In most cases, symptoms of mites are recognized only when they attack humans, but the diagnosis of rat mite dermatitis requires identification of the parasite, which is more likely to be found in the environment than on the hosts’ skin itself. Here, five different outbreaks from Bavaria are reported. A clinical example is the case of a 23-year-old medical student and several other residents inhabiting a rat- and mouse-infested house in Munich. The arthropods originally came from an Italian restaurant and surrounding facilities. Mites were found in large numbers in the students’ flat. The patient was suffering from severe itching and papular urticaria. He consulted a dermatology clinic complaining of a pruritic dermatitis of 2-weeks duration. Dermatitis was misdiagnosed as allergy and treatment with an anti-inflammatory agent was unsuccessful. Eradication of rodents and treatment of the house with a pyrethroid were performed to prevent reinfestation. Ornithonyssus bacoti is a periodic haematophageous parasite and spends a relatively short time on the host. Causal therapy with antiparasitic agents on human patients is not necessary. If indicated, treatment should be symptomatic. Funding: Self-funded.

Molecular studies were conducted in order to examine the presence of bacteria. All mites were identified as O. bursa . We detected for the first time Wolbachia sp., associated with the genus Ornithonyssus . In contrast, mites were negative for species of Rickettsia, Bartonella and Borrelia . In addition to the damage that the starlings produce as an invasive species in central Argentina, herein we report the association of these birds with O. bursa , favoring the dispersal of the mites and their colonization to other birds.

In the Neotropics it is responsible for causing significant economic losses as it affects commercial poultry. It also is a vector for diseases, affecting both birds and humans. In this study, we thoroughly examined a reproductive ensemble of birds of the Order Passeriformes, at two sites in the region of the Espinal of Santa Fe province, Argentina, with the aim of describing the parasite-host associations to detect differences in prevalence in natural hosts. Of 55 species examined, 28 were parasitized, of which the most affected species were the rufous hornero (Furnariidae) Furnarius rufus (49.4%), the Shiny Cowbird (Icteridae) Molothrus bonariensis (40%) and the finch (Emberizidae) Sicalis flaveola (48.4%). M. bonariensis is a parasitic species and in the study area mainly parasitize F. rufus, while S. flaveola use abandoned nests of F. rufus, so we might conclude that O. bursa is highly associated with hornero nests.

Se detectó por primera vez la presencia de Wolbachia sp. asociada con el género Ornithonyssus. En contraste, los resultados fueron negativos para las especies de Rickettsia, Bartonella y Borrelia.
