    Abstract:

    This special issue is a tribute to the Australian plant biologist Professor Charles Barry Osmond – Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society of London, and Leopoldina, the German National Academy of Sciences – and his many contributions to our understanding of the biochemistry and physiological ecology of CAM (crassulacean acid metabolism) photosynthesis. This water-conserving photosynthetic pathway is characterised by nocturnal uptake of atmospheric CO2 and typically enables succulent plants to perform and survive in warm semiarid terrestrial and epiphytic habitats. The idea for this issue is to mark the occasion of Barry’s 80th birthday in 2019. The foreword highlights some of his outstanding contributions and introduces the research papers of the special issue.

    A curved mill lunch basket, belonging to Walter Davis, Grand Falls-Windsor. Davis used this basket while working as a paper inspector at the mill. He worked in the mill in Grand Falls-Windsor from 1952 until retirement in 1990. The basket was also used by Davis' son in the 1980s while he worked in the mill part-time on weekends. The lunch basket was constructed by Leonard Raymond Osmond, Davis' uncle, who worked with Abitibi Price from 1921-1997. The material used is broken off hockey sticks and the date of construction is c1980. 20cmx16cmx31.5c

Elle procède de sa sensibilité de femme, laquelle, paradoxalement (mais y a-t-il vraiment paradoxe ?) génère une finesse du point de vue, une pertinence du discours et une large ouverture d’esprit. C’est sa sensibilité qui guide ses choix et ses prises de position. C’est encore sa sensibilité qui conduit sa plume lorsque, au travers de fines auto-analyses, elle fait partager à son lecteur, dans ses Récits d’une tante, ses réactions, ses regrets et ses engagements dans la vie politique de son temps.The countess of Boigne belonged to an ancient but enlightened aristocracy. Her education, mainly provided by her father, marquis of Osmond, stimulated in her at a very early age a strong interest in philosophy, but also and mainly in politics. The marquis of Osmond happened to be appointed as King Louis XVIII’s ambassador in Turin and London. Madame de Boigne was also a very close friend of the Orleans family. Thus, she was frequently to be found in the immediate entourage of powerful people. However, while putting to paper her experience and analysis of political events of her time, the countess of Boigne never uses the cold and impersonal style of an impartial witness.
