The effects of urbanization on populations of grass shrimp Palaemonetes spp. in small, high salinity estuaries

ScottAbstract:High salinity estuaries in the southeastern U.S. have experienced increased inputs of contaminants from nonpoint source (NPS) urban runoff and decreases in habitat due to filling of wetlands and dock/bulkhead construction. Urbanization may pose significant risks to estuarine fauna, particularly crustaceans. The grass shrimp of the genus Palaemonetes, is one of the dominant species found in estuarine tidal creeks, accounting for greater than 50% of all macropelagic fauna on an annual basis. Spatial analytical and geographic information system techniques were used to determine which factors influenced the Palaemonetes population structures in a South Carolina bar-built estuary surrounded by urban development. Impacts from land use practices were investigated using concentric circular buffers around study sites. Factors investigated included sediment-associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons concentration, land use classification, percent impervious surfaces, and other selected urban factors. Geographic information system and statistical modeling showed quantitative relationships between land use class and impacts on Palaemonetes density. The study suggests that habitat loss is a major factor influencing grass shrimp densities. Multiple regression modeling suggests a significant relationship between habitat alterations and Palaemonetes densities.

These changes may pose significant risks to estuarine fauna, including crustaceans. Several studies have shown relationships between land use classification and levels of stress in estuarine populations. The grass shrimp of the genus Palaemonetes is one of the dominant species found in estuarine tidal creeks, accounting for more than 50 % of all macropelagic fauna. Grass shrimp populations were sampled monthly for 3 years at six estuarine creeks on Kiawah Island, SC. Creek watersheds were estimated using National Aerial Photograph Program color infrared and low-altitude true color aerial photography combined with in situ differentially corrected global positioning system mapping of engineered features. Land classifications delineated included water, marsh, buildings, roads, and lawns. Pairwise comparisons for grass shrimp densities among sites showed significant differences on an annual and seasonal basis. Significant relationships (p < 0.05) between land class variables and grass shrimp density were identified both annually and seasonally. These findings suggest an influence of land use on Palaemonetes spp. populations.

Populations of grass shrimp were sampled monthly, over a period of ten years, at four sites in South Carolina with varying upland land use characteristics. Spatial and temporal trends in grass shrimp densities were noted over time and between sites. Agricultural and golf course land usage corresponded with decreased grass shrimp population levels, overall shrimp size, and percentage of gravid females. Conservation methods, such as the use of best management practices (BMPs) and integrated pesticide management (IPM) at agricultural fields, corresponded with increased grass shrimp population density.

Endocrine-mediated effects of UV-A irradiation on grass shrimp (Palaemonetes pugio) reproduction

Thomas ChandlerAbstract:Abstract Although much is known regarding photoperiodic effects on crustacean egg production, the effects of ultraviolet (UV) light on reproduction has not been investigated. Likewise, little is known concerning the interaction between UV and xenobiotic exposure on crustacean reproductive cycles. In this study, male and female grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, were exposed to sublethal concentrations of endosulfan (200 ng/l and 400 ng/l ES) under both white fluorescent (WF) and UV-A (315–400 nm) light conditions for 50 days in laboratory bioassays. Female endocrine (vitellogenin, ecdysteroids, and cholesterol), reproductive (percent gravid, clutch size), and embryo (days to hatch, hatching success, and hatching survival) responses were assessed. UV-exposure alone caused a significant (>4-fold) increase in total Palaemonetes pugio female egg production over the course of 50 days. Exposure to ES and UV significantly lowered the percentage of gravid females relative to UV controls, whereas ES-exposed shrimp under WF lighting did not exhibit these trends. Although higher vitellogenin concentrations and lower ecdysteroid titers were correlated with increased female egg production, cholesterol titers only exhibited a dose-dependent change when exposed to ES. Embryos from females exposed to UV had significantly lower ecdysteroid titers and shorter hatching times but there were no differences in embryo vitellogenin concentrations, hatching success, or hatching survival. These results indicate that UV-A exposure has a pronounced effect on grass shrimp (Palaemonetes pugio) reproduction and is likely mediated through 5-hydroxytrptamine (5-HT)-related neuroendocrine pathways. The implications for decapod aquaculture and evaluating chronic contaminant effects are discussed.

The chronic toxicity of fenoxycarb to larvae of the grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio

ScottAbstract:Abstract This study examined effects of fenoxycarb, a carbamate insecticide, on larvae of the grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio. In laboratory experiments, grass shrimp larvae were exposed to fenoxycarb from hatch to postlarval metamorphosis in a chronic, static renewal bio assay. LC50's ranged from 0.92 mg/L at 96 h to 0.35 mg/L at the end of the study (24 days). In assessing sublethal effects of fenoxycarb, postlarval emergence was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced in exposed grass shrimp as compared with controls, and the time to reach postlarval status was significantly (p < 0.05) increased in exposed grass shrimp. Significant differences were not found in other sublethal parameters including postlarval dry weight and intermolt duration. Analysis of fenoxycarb from spiked seawater samples showed concentrations declined by 32 to 42% after 24 h.

Hydrobiologia, 1999Co-Authors: S De GraveAbstract:A study was undertaken on the variability of rostral dentition and telson setation in a saltmarsh population of Palaemonetes varians (Leach), collected from the Douglas Estuary, Cork Harbour, Ireland. Both these morphological characters are thought to be of taxonomic value, but have been little studied. A comparison with literature data indicates a latitudinal trend with a higher frequency of six dorsal teeth at higher latitudes. However, more studies are needed to validate this trend. Only a minor amount of individuals deviated from harbouring two ventral sub-terminal setae on the telson, hence this character could be used to separate some of the European members of the genus.
