Once the dental cast was scanned, virtual surveying and design of the framework on a 3-dimensional computer model was accomplished. A rapid prototype machine was used for direct fabrication of the alloy framework. Traditional finishing techniques were applied, the framework was assessed by a clinician in a conventional manner, fitted to the patient, and judged to be satisfactory by both the patient and clinician.

RPDs are metal frameworks designed to retain artificial replacement teeth in the oral cavity.Design/methodology/approach – The study was undertaken by applied case study. An RPD was designed using computer‐aided design software according to well‐established dental technology design principles, based on a digitally scanned cast produced from an impression of the patient's mouth. The RPD design was then exported as an STL file in preparation for direct manufacture using selective laser melting. Dimensionally accurate frameworks were manufactured in 316L stainless steel and chromium‐cobalt alloy. These were assessed for accuracy of fit and function on the patient cast and on the patient in clinic.Findings – This successful case study demonstrates that an RM approach can produce fully functional, precisely fitting RPD...

Mechanical properties and microstructure of removable Partial Denture clasps manufactured using selective laser melting

Ma, Alaa Elwany, Ibrahim KaramanAbstract:This study compares the mechanical response and microstructure of Co-Cr-Mo removable Partial Denture models made through conventional lost-wax casting and the selective laser melting additive manufacturing process. Co-Cr-Mo clasps for removal Partial Dentures, based on a wax model (BEGO USA), were fabricated through lost-wax technique and selective laser melting, and subjected to mechanical bending experiments to determine their yield strength and maximum reversible deformation. Single-Factor Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to compare data from the two populations. Microstructure and chemical composition of the clasps were determined through scanning electron microscopy and wave-dispersive spectroscopy to rationalize the differences and similarities in the mechanical testing results from the two groups. It was found that the clasps made using lost-wax technique and selective laser melting exhibit comparable mean yield strengths and maximum elastic deformations, however the underlying microstructure of the cast clasps vastly differs from the laser-melted counterparts. Furthermore, the laser melted clasps exhibit larger variability in their mechanical response. While selective laser melting is capable of producing removable Partial Denture clasps with similar average mechanical responses to those of lost-wax cast counterparts, additional studies should be conducted to minimize the variability in the laser melted clasps in order to minimize unexpected failures.

Common reasons for a failed attachment-retained RPD are fracture of the framework, fracture of the roots or teeth, and irretrievable decrease of retention. When an RPD framework major connector has been fractured, it should be remade. This article describes a technique to remake a fractured mandibular RPD using cast round profile attachment analogs without the need for replacement of the fixed Partial Denture.
