Ecomorphological adaptation in three mudskippers (Teleostei: Gobioidei: Gobiidae) from the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman

We investigated: (i) the association between burrow density and selected ecological variables; (ii) the phylogenetic relationships among these species, based on two mtDNA and one nDNA markers; (iii) their geometric morphometrics and ancestral shape reconstructions, based on two-dimensional landmark configurations; and (iv) their body surface-to-volume ratios ( SAV ), based on a geometric model. Boleophthalmus dussumieri and S. tenuis are more closely related, and more elongated than P. waltoni ; the body of S. tenuis also has a higher SAV , and its elongated shape appears to be a divergent trait. P. waltoni is found in a wide range of conditions, including vegetated habitats; B. dussumieri is associated with low-energy conditions and fine unvegetated deposits; and S. tenuis is associated with high-energy conditions and coarser, non-cohesive sediments. These results suggest that body elongation in Scartelaos species is a divergent locomotory adaptation to marine habitats characterised by semi-liquid and less cohesive sediments. The more compact body shape of Periophthalmus species is hypothesised to have evolved from a gobionelline ancestor, and is proposed to be a preadaptation to subaerial locomotion in semi-terrestrial habitats.

Habitat segregation and cryptic adaptation of species of Periophthalmus (Gobioidei: Gobiidae).

Sulaiman, Giuseppe CrosaAbstract:A study was conducted on the habitat distribution of four sympatric species of Periophthalmus (the silver-lined mudskipper Periophthalmus argentilineatus, the slender mudskipper Periophthalmus gracilis, the kalolo mudskipper Periophthalmus kalolo and the Malacca mudskipper Periophthalmus malaccensis) from northern Sulawesi. Molecular phylogenetic reconstructions based on one mtDNA marker (16S) were used to validate the morphological taxa, identifying five molecular clades. Periophthalmus argentilineatus includes two molecular species, which are named Periophthalmus argentilineatus clades F and K. Multivariate direct gradient analysis show that these species form three distinct ecological guilds, with the two molecular species occurring in different guilds. Periophthalmus clade F is ecologically eurytypic; Periophthalmus clade K and P. kalolo are prevalent in ecosystems isolated by strong oceanic currents and at shorter distances from the sea; P. gracilis plus P. malaccensis are prevalent in ecosystems connected by shallow coastal waters, in vegetated habitats at larger distances from the sea. This indicates for the first time that mudskipper species exhibit a range of adaptations to semiterrestrialism not only within genera, but even within morphospecies, delineating a much more complex adaptive scenario than previously assumed.

First record and conservation value of Periophthalmus malaccensis Eggert from Borneo, with ecological notes on other mudskippers (Teleostei: Gobiidae) in Brunei
Scientia Bruneiana, 2016Co-Authors: Gianluca PolgarAbstract:The mudskipper Periophthalmus malaccensis is first recorded in Borneo, from two mangrove areas of Brunei Darussalam. The distribution and habitat types where this and other ecologically similar mudskippers (Periophthalmus and Periophthalmodon species) were found in Brunei are also described, from field surveys conducted in Bruneian coastal wetlands from 2013 to 2015. P. malaccensis has a relatively restricted geographic distribution, and probably got extinct in historical times in Singapore. In Brunei, this species occurs at low population density in high intertidal habitats, which are highly impacted by anthropogenic destruction and fragmentation. For these reasons, the conservation status of this species should be evaluated.

Morphological divergence in the Walton's Mudskipper, Periophthalmus waltoni Koumans, 1941, from the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman (Gobioidei: Gobiidae)
Zoology in the Middle East, 2014Co-Authors: Mehdi Ghanbarifardi, Hamid Reza Esmaeili, Mansour Aliabadian, Gianluca PolgarAbstract:The body shape variation among 244 specimens of Periophthalmus waltoni Koumans, 1941, collected from seven stations in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, was analysed by utilising geometric morphometrics (GM) and truss-based morphometrics methods (TBM). Discriminant function analysis did not show significant differences between the shape of females and males. Canonical variate analysis and cluster analysis classified the specimens in two separate groups of stations: those in the Persian Gulf, and those in the Strait of Hormuz plus Gulf of Oman. Potential factors contributing to the observed variation include differences in physicochemical parameters between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

The analysis of 494 P. modestus and 455 P. magnuspinnatus specimens revealed that both were carnivores, consuming mainly gammarid amphipods, polychaetes, insects, and crabs. However, adult P. modestus consumed greater proportions of polychaetes whereas P. magnuspinnatus ate more crabs. The diets of both species showed ontogenetic changes in diet; smaller individuals of both species consumed harpacticoid copepods and gammarid amphipods, whereas larger fishes of both species fed mainly on different preys. The stomach content index (SCI) of both species underwent significant size-related and diel changes; the values of both species were higher in the larger size classes and during the late afternoon. Levin’s index of diet breadths of both species were lower during the day than at night, indicating high prey selection during the daytime. Non-metric multi-dimensional scaling ordination emphasized that the dietary compositions of the smaller individuals of both species showed some obvious similarities, with dietary similarity gradually reducing with increasing fish size. This indicates that the two species consume gradually different types of prey as they grow, that is, resource partitioning may be occurring between larger P. modestus and P. magnuspinnatus.

Periophthalmus magnuspinnatus was active from May to September on the mudflats, exclusively occupying rough and elevated or sloped mudflats of the seashore or the stream mouth, usually vegetated with halophilous grasses. The congeneric species, P. modestus , mainly occurred on extensive low-elevation and level mudflats with no visible vegetation. An apparent alternation of habitat use by P. modestus took place on mudflats at the stream mouth in mid-October, when P. magnuspinnatus began wintering in its burrow and P. modestus came onto the vacated mudflats to construct burrows for wintering. The active season for P. magnuspinnatus at 17°C or higher air temperature was a little shorter than that of P. modestus . Periophthalmus magnuspinnatus constructed a burrow for the entire season in the highest area of the intertidal mudflat, where they hid themselves during high tide or when frightened, whereas P. modestus were likely to use any burrow constructed by other animals or sunken places to hide. The main stomach contents of P. magnuspinnatus were crabs and gammarids. During the reproductive season from May to July, P. magnuspinnatus performed mating behaviors and constructed a spawning burrow similar to the ones known for P. modestus , except their body color turned dark and quivering body movements were observed in the mature male instead of a pink or orange body color and wiggling body movements as in P. modestus . Eggs, measuring 1.56–1.69 mm in major axis and 0.94–1.0 mm in minor axis, were laid on the ceiling and the side wall of the “J”-shaped spawning room generally known for Periophthalmus species. Young of both species started to occur on the mudflat in June.

The natural history of mudskippers in northern Australia, with field identification characters
2011Co-Authors: Toru Takita, Helen K Larson, Atsushi IshimatsuAbstract:We provide field identification characters and report on the natural history of mudskippers (Gobiidae: Oxudercinae) in Cairns, Darwin, Derby and Broome, northern Australia. Nine species in four genera are recorded (Boleophthalmus birdsongi, B. caeruleomaculatus, Periophthalmodon freycineti, Periophthalmus argentilineatus, P. darwini, P. minutus, P. novaeguineaensis, P. takita and Scartelaos histophorus). The intertidal zonation of mudskippers conforms to previously reported patterns, but subtle differences in habitat preference are observed at both intraspecific and intrageneric levels, underlining the need for in-depth investigation of habitat selection by mudskippers. Although most species inhabit littoral mudflats, some show possible habitat expansion: juvenile Periophthalmodon freycineti are found occasionally in pools on a sandy shore, and a population of Periophthalmus minutus is found to be established in a marginal mangrove habitat (a salt flat behind a pioneer mangrove assemblage). Burrow confinement during high tide is confirmed for both species of Boleophthalmus, two Periophthalmus (P. minutus and P. novaeguineaensis) and Scartelaos, but not for Periophthalmodon or the other Periophthalmus species. Territory formation is described for S. histophorus.

Two New Species of Periophthalmus (Teleostei: Gobiidae: Oxudercinae) from Northern Australia, and a re-diagnosis of Periophthalmus novaeguineaensis
2004Co-Authors: Helen K Larson, Toru TakitaAbstract:Two new species of mudskipper (genus Periophthalmus) are described from mangrove habitats of north-western Australia. They both resemble small specimens of Periophthalmus novaeguineaensis Eggert, 1935, and have been confused with that species. Periophthalmus darwini n. sp. is distinguished by a combination of characters, in particular a greatly reduced first dorsal fin in both sexes. Periophthalmus murdyi n. sp. is distinguished by a combination of characters, including heavily pigmented pelvic fins and a relatively plain blackish first dorsal fin. Periophthalmus novaeguineaensis is re-diagnosed, as the data presented in its 1989 review by Murdy was found to include that of the two new species. Periophthalmus expeditionium Whitley, 1953, may be a valid species also. A dichotomous key to all Periophthalmus species is included.

Specimens ranged in body length(BL) from 1.3 to 9.1 cm. The gonadosomatic index(GSI) of females was highest in June and decreased until August. The hepatosomatic index(HSI) and fatness index of females were high in April and then decreased to nadirs in July. Spawning season lated from April to August and the ratio of females to males did not significantly differ(-test, p>0.05). The first spawning length was 4.5 cm BL, and the size of 50% maturity was estimated at 4.98 cm BL. The specimens ranged in body length (BL) from 1.5 to 8.4 cm. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of females was highest in May and decreased until September. The hepatosomatic index (HSI) and fatness index of females were high in April and then decreased to a nadir in July. The data indicate that the spawning season was from April to September. There was no significant difference in the ratio of females to males $(X^2-test,\;p>0.01)$. Over 50% of the females over 5 cm in BL were sexually mature. Fecundity ranged from 1,664 to 13,428.
