    Abstract:

    This chapter results from an investigation into the digital identity of a community of researchers, part of a PhD study on Education focused on Personal Learning Networks (PLN). Today the social web is a massive reality in academic research, which leads to question the importance of the digital presence of researchers in these informal contexts and how they relate to each other. With the evolution of the internet, new challenges are posed to researchers, both socially (social web) and academically. Immersion in these digital environments promotes the development of open research practices, with evidence of interactions between group members, stressing the collaborative way we interact in the context of Learning throughout life. Thus, the social web allows the researcher 2.0 to access the work of other researchers quickly and effectively, sharing content and collaborating with others through a PLN. This Personal Network requires a range of skills related to the digital identity of researchers, considering the environment in which they are operating.

    2 ABSTRACT In the current fast-changing information environment, it is essential that library professionals are able to navigate and interpret the world of inf ormation overload effectively and efficiently, and ensure that our understanding of the information environment is both cr edible and meaningful. There is therefore an urgent need for supportive ways of Learning beyond training that can be provided in the workplace. While formal training is important, it can be limited and expensive, and ongoing support for learners is often non-existent after the training. The paper describes the concept of the Personal Learning Network (PLN), and argues that the use of a PLN can empower learners by enabling them to identify and focus on areas of need, and take control of their own Learning. The authors' experiences in starting and maintaining their own PLNs are described. A number of online tools that can be used for ong oing Learning are examined, and strategies for library professionals interested in ongoing Learning and setting up their own Personal Learning Network are proposed.

    Workers in the 21st century workplace are faced with rapid and constant developments that place a heavy demand on them to continually learn beyond what the Human Resources and Training groups can meet. As a consequence, professionals must rely on non-formal Learning approaches through the development of a Personal Learning Network to keep up-to-date. This phenomenological study used an explanatory mixed methods approach to examine the lived experiences of how training professionals construct their Personal Learning Networks to support their continuous Learning in the workplace.
