    A 16-year-old girl and her parents presented to my office for her wellness evaluation. The patient has generalized anxiety disorder with comorbid major depression, for which she has been prescribed a serotonergic antidepressant. She is a high school student, lives with her parents, and is currently preparing college applications. She has occasional headaches and disturbed sleep. She takes daily three-mile walks and plays on her school tennis team, both of which help relieve her anxiety symptoms. The therapist she sees once a week has suggested enrollment in a therapeutic foster dog walking program to help further relieve her anxiety symptoms.

    Objective: This pilot study evaluated the potential benefits of Pet Therapy on symptoms of anxiety and depression in antepartum hospitalized women with high-risk pregnancies. Study design: Eighty-two women in a hospital-based setting completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Beck Depression Inventory before and after the Pet Therapy visit. For both questionnaires, paired t -test was used and adjusted P -values were obtained using the Hochberg step-up Bonferroni method. Result: The mean scores for depressive symptoms significantly improved from the pre-Pet Therapy (10.1±6.3) compared with the post-Pet Therapy (6.3±5.9) ( P

  • The effects of animal-assisted Therapy on happiness of chronic psychiatric patients in a nursing home in Tehran: A randomized controlled study

    Background Psychiatric patients who live in nursing homes may often feel a loss of autonomy, decision-making, and participation in social activities. They usually had little or no visitors and also they do not have any purpose for living. Pets may decrease this problem and improve their happiness. Objectives The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of animal-assisted Therapy (AAT) on happiness of chronic psychiatric patients in nursing home. Method The study design was a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with pre and post-test. Seventy males with chronic mental health disorder who were patients of the nursing homes were randomly divided into a Pet Therapy intervention group and control group. Patients in the experimental group received Pet-Therapy with bird as 6 weeks Therapy comprising 6 sessions per week. All patients were evaluated by the Oxford happiness questionnaire before and after 6 weeks. Results Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted and pretest was considered as a covariate variable. The result demonstrated that the patients in the experimental group had significantly increased (P  Conclusion It is important to consider ways of enhancing happiness in psychiatric patients who live in the nursing homes. Also, it is appearing that AAT can be helpful for them.

  • Prevention of transmitted infections in a Pet Therapy program: An exemplar

    The focus of the patient experience in health care delivery has afforded the opportunity to integrate Pet Therapy as a part of patient care. The purpose of this article is to present the implementation of a Pet Therapy program that includes guidelines for the prevention of transmitted infections. Consideration of infection prevention strategies has resulted in a 16-year program with no documented incidences of transmitted infections, averaging 20,000 Pet Therapy interactions per year.
