The Solar Wind as a Turbulence Laboratory
Living Reviews in Solar Physics, 2013Co-Authors: Roberto Bruno, Vincenzo CarboneAbstract:In this review we will focus on a topic of fundamental importance for both astrophysics and plasma physics, namely the occurrence of large-amplitude low-frequency fluctuations of the fields that describe the plasma state. This subject will be treated within the context of the expanding solar wind and the most meaningful advances in this research field will be reported emphasizing the results obtained in the past decade or so. As a matter of fact, Helios inner heliosphere and Ulysses’ high latitude observations, recent multi-spacecrafts measurements in the solar wind (Cluster four satellites) and new numerical approaches to the problem, based on the dynamics of complex systems, brought new important insights which helped to better understand how turbulent fluctuations behave in the solar wind. In particular, numerical simulations within the realm of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence theory unraveled what kind of physical mechanisms are at the basis of turbulence generation and energy transfer across the spectral domain of the fluctuations. In other words, the advances reached in these past years in the investigation of solar wind turbulence now offer a rather complete picture of the Phenomenological Aspect of the problem to be tentatively presented in a rather organic way.

Reflections led on this accident have pushed to consider the phenomenon of tank pressurization as a potential initiating event of the fire ball observed. In concrete terms, when a fixed roof storage tank is surrounded by a pool fire, and when the vents or the insulation are not correctly designed, the inside pressure can raise until the mechanical limits of the structure are reached. The aim of this study is to develop a tool which will allow to follow the variations of the pressure and temperature in the gas phase, highlighting if a pressure increase is possible or not. This will help the sizing of new tank vents and insulation of the walls, or evaluating the risk of already build structures, by solving the question occurrence of the accident, regarding the estimated external fire duration. The model also gives the temperature distribution in the liquid phase, at each time step. In case of rupture, this information will be useful to describe the Phenomenological Aspect of the accident after the rupture of the tank. It means that qualifying and quantifying the fire ball generated and its effect on persons and structures will be possible. Currently, although a few analytical models exist to quantify the fire ball and its effects after the rupture, none is able to describe with accuracy the pre-rupture phenomena. This model is a work in progress, and at the end, the tool will take into account the two phases of the accident and will allow to study complete and consistent scenarios. After a description of the numerical model developed, this paper presents its application on the study of the influence of various parameters.

2016Co-Authors: Suet Kay ChanAbstract:This study compares the socialisation effects of pursuing Chinese-medium and English-medium education in Malaysia, focusing on the Malaysian Chinese. For this study, they are known as the Chinese-educated and English-educated Malaysian Chinese. In terms of identity, these two groups have been said to differ. Using the framework of cultural capital, which has been widely used in educational research, I compare these identity differences, manifested through worldview, consumption tastes, and ambition. These are also known as the three Aspects of cultural capital - the institutionalised, the objectified, and the embodied. Basing my research design on other landmark cultural capital studies, such as the BBC-LSE Great British Class Survey (2013), I have designed a questionnaire that encapsulates these identity expressions. However, I have also included a follow-up interview in order to delve deeper into the Phenomenological Aspect of these consumption-based identity differences, an Aspect which has not been mined in full detail in most similar studies. My findings indicate that cultural globalisation is bringing two formerly disparate value systems into the forefront, repackaging some of its attributes as desirable cultural capital (global habitus), and transmitting these values into Malaysian Chinese youth, who embrace it to remain competitively relevant, regardless of education background. This is done through the platform of the mass media. I thus conclude that in an increasingly borderless world, facilitated by transnational media flows, the Chinese-educated and English-educated Malaysian Chinese are experiencing a convergence.
