This is the first species of Hydrophylita to be described from the Old World, and the first record of Phoresy in the genus. Adult females were observed aggregating at the base of the female damselfly’s abdomen. When the damselfly begins ovipositing, females move to the tip of the abdomen, enter the water and quickly locate eggs for parasitising. The article contains links to video footage of this process.

International Journal of Acarology, 2019Co-Authors: Szymon Konwerski, Jerzy M Gutowski, Jerzy BloszykAbstract:We studied the phoretic relationships between the mites of the genus Trichouropoda Berlese, 1916 (Uropodina) and the longhorn beetle Plagionotus detritus (Linnaeus, 1758) based on large samples of specimens (2050 beetles and 19,216 mites) collected in the Bialowieza Primeval Forest in Central Europe. Phoresy was studied over the years 2014, 2015, and 2016, with the emphasis on multi-annual trends in host–phoront associations, seasonal changes in intensity of Phoresy, proportion of carriers of mites in the beetle population, and preferences of phoretic deutonymphs for specific parts of the host’s body. The high repeatability in all the variables we studied indicates high stability of the phoretic relationships, probably resulting from the synchronization of life cycles of beetle dispersants and phoretic mites. The long-term coevolution of phoronts and carriers in a natural forest ecosystem, as well as the expected close association of mites with specific beetle-generated microhabitats in larval galleries, may be important factors affecting the strength of the phoretic relationship.

Samples of mites phoretic on two Tetropium Kirby, 1837 species were collected in 2008 and compared with the data from 2007. In both years, the same study plots and collecting methods were used in the same phenological periods. The phenomenon of Phoresy was studied with emphasis on phoront–host associations, temporal changes in intensity of Phoresy, proportion of carriers of mites in longhorn beetle populations, participation of longhorn beetle species in the transportation of mites, and preferences of phoretic deutonymphs for specific parts of the host’s body. Gwiazdowicz, Jerzy M Gutowski, Anna MądraAbstract:The aim of this study was to assess the phoretic relationship between two beetle species of the genus Tetropium and mites from order Mesostigmata. The study was conducted in the Bialowieza Forest, which is recognized as one of Europe’s last natural forest areas. Insects were caught over a period of 8 weeks in 72 attractant traps (type Intercept IPM). In total 1250 specimens of genus Tetropium were collected. We analyzed 524 beetles, including 295 specimens of T. castaneum and 229 specimens of T. fuscum. On 49 beetles (9.4%) there were 785 individuals of Trichouropoda shcherbakae (Trematuridae). Mites were more common on T. fuscum, which carried 82% of all collected deutonymphs. Most of the mites found on beetles were attached to their legs. This study reports on changes in the intensity of Phoresy in time and location of mite deutonymphs on their host species.

Thirty pheromone traps in the Karkonosze National Park (Poland) caught 10,575 bark beetles on which there were 2,388 mesostigmatid mites belonging to eight species. The most numerous mites were Dendrolaelaps quadrisetus (1076 ind.) and Trichouropoda polytricha (1067 ind.).

Gwiazdowicz, Bruce Halliday, Pawel T Dolata, Bartlomiej GoldynAbstract:We surveyed the Mesostigmatid mite fauna of nests of the black stork Ciconia nigra, to determine the role of these mites in the biology of their hosts. We present preliminary results obtained on the basis of material collected from 31 nests. A total of 1,615 mite specimens was recorded, belonging to 39 species. The most abundant species were Dendrolaelaps strenzkei, Apionoseius infirmus, Macrocheles merdarius and Macrocheles ancyleus, which constituted more than 65% of all the specimens recorded. The presence of large numbers of predatory mites could be beneficial to the birds, if they feed on the eggs and larvae of the bird’s parasites. It is likely that many of the mite species found in these nests were carried there by Phoresy on insects, mainly Coleoptera.
