    Abstract:

Helicobacter pylori infection is the main risk factor for developing gastric cancer, with the influence of genetic, toxic and dietary factors. It is the fourth most common cancer and the second most deadly worldwide, so its prevention is important specially focusing on dietary habits, to be approached from the primary care setting.Evaluate the influence of diet on the primary prevention of gastric cancer in patients with Helicobacter pylori infection.Systematic review, the keywords "Helicobacter pylori", "diet" and "stomach neoplasms" were previously selected from the DeCS and MeSH structured vocabulary. Sources of primary and secondary databases were consulted, limits were established.H. pylori infection and dietary factors may act synergistically in the development of gastric cancer and some cooking practices. Dietary factors may increase the risk of gastric cancer like the high consumption of salt, salty Foods, saturated fat, red and processed meats, while fruits and vegetables may be considered as a protective factor, especially the high consumption of Allium and the cruciferous family. The lifestyle and dietary habits may influence the development of gastric cancer, especially in patients with H. pylori infection. A questionnaire was used to obtain information regarding potential risk factors, including diet, and blood samples were obtained to examine H pylori infection status. Results: Positive H pylori status (odds ratio [OR], 3.2; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.8–5.9) and high consumption of Pickled Foods (OR, 27.1; 95%, 8.7–79.1) appeared to increase the risk of noncardia gastric cancer, whereas high consumption of vegetables (OR, 0.3; 95% CI, 0...

  • Dietary factors and cancer of the colon and rectum in a population based case-control study in Shanghai
    Chinese journal of epidemiology, 1994
    Co-Authors: Yang G, Gao Y, Ji B
    Abstract:

The study was a population-based case control one, to compare possible difference in the risk factors between colonic and rectal cancer. This study showed that: (1) High intake of pork and saturated fat was an important risk factor for colon cancer, and only slightly related to rectal cancer. (2) Low consumption of vegetables especially cruciferous vegetables, rhizome vegetables, sea weeds, legume vegetables, dietary fiber and some vitamins mainly derived from vegetables, e.g. vitamin c and carotene, was associated with an increased risk for both colonic and rectal cancer, and these factors were closer relationship with rectal cancer than colon cancer. (3) High intake of the fried and Pickled Foods significantly increase the risk of occurrence of these cancers. (4) The ratio of bowel cancer in first degree relatives of colon cancer cases was 2.9 times of control group (P < 0.01), but the ratio for rectal cancer was only 1.6 times (P > 0.05) compared with control group.
