The traditional DBB delivery system is a sequential low-integration process and can lead to inefficiencies and adverse relationships between stakeholders.     Abstract:

    Much of the water and wastewater lines in the United States are nearing the end of their useful life. A significant reinvestment is needed in the upcoming decades to replace or rehabilitate the water and wastewater infrastructure in the United States. Currently, the traditional method for delivering water and wastewater Pipeline Engineering and construction projects is design-bid-build (DBB). The traditional DBB delivery system is a sequential low-integration process and can lead to inefficiencies and adverse relationships between stakeholders. Alternative project delivery methods (APDM) such as construction manager at risk (CMAR) have been introduced to increase stakeholder integration and ultimately enhance project performance. Schedule performance can have significant impacts on Pipeline projects and can be a major contributor to cost growth. However, the schedule performance of CMAR projects in the Pipeline Engineering and construction industry has not been quantitatively studied. The objective of this paper is to develop a baseline for the schedule performance of CMAR water and wastewater Pipeline projects. The research objective will be accomplished by administering a quantitative survey developed to facilitate the data collection from 53 projects, followed by a statistical analysis of the schedule performance data. The results show an average schedule growth of 1.77%, which is notably less than the typical schedule growth observed with other delivery systems. This research contributes to the body of knowledge by providing the first quantitative study of CMAR schedule performance for Pipelines Engineering and construction projects.

    Abstract:

    Offshore fields are increasingly important for the development of offshore resources due to the growing energy needs. However, an offshore field for oil and gas production has difficult development conditions, e.g., high temperature, high pressure, sweet/sour compositions of fluids, etc. Corrosion is one of the biggest issues for offshore pipeli ne Engineering. In this study, a Corrosion Resistant Alloy (CRA) pipe for corrosion prevention was investigated through its global demand and trends, and three types of CRA Pipelines were introduced with detailed explanations. The usefulness of CRA was also evaluated in comparison to a carbon steel Pipeline in terms of the structural strength, cost, and other factors. Offshore Pipeline Engineering, including mechanical design and verification of the results through an installation analysis based on numerical software, was performed for the carbon steel type and solid CRA type. The results obtained from this study will be useful data for CRA Pipeline designers and researchers.

    Abstract:

    A comparative study was carried out to define the identity and process of front end Engineering design (FEED) for engineerng education. Engineering education models used at Penn State University and POSTECH Graduate School of Engineering Mastership (GEM) are analyzed to benchmark with other Engineering disciplines. These two models were also benchmarked with several subsea Pipeline Engineering projects. Understanding and developing the Engineering concepts and problems in early stage is essential to improve ike design capacity and to reduce ike risks and related cost when an Engineering project is executed. This paper provides a guide and methodology how to perform the FEED in Engineering education and Engineering design projects.
