Malacological history of lake Annecy (France): a comparison of late holocene (since 4700 BC) and present mollusc assemblages

MagnyAbstract:An analysis of mollusc assemblages of the Younger Atlantic, the Subboreal and the Subatlantic periods (i. e. since 4700 before Christ) was carried out on the basis of 8 cores taken from the littoral zone of Lake Annecy, France. The structure and composition of these communities remained remarkably stable for several thousand years. The assemblages were dominated by gastropods: Bithynia tentaculata, Valvata piscinalis and V. cristata. Of the bivalves, only Pisidium nitidum was well represented. Comparison between fossil and present-day populations in the littoral zone revealed considerable changes in the composition and structure of the communities. Seven species have appeared recently in the lake and current assemblages are dominated by the bivalves of the Sphaeriidae family, since the development of gastropods was greatly limited by substantial regression of vegetation belts during the 20th century. The dominant species during the second part of the Holocene were replaced by Potamopyrgus antipodarum in the gastropods and Pisidium henslowanum, Dreissena polymorpha and P. moitessierianum in the bivalves. Finally, it is hypothesised that recent climatic warming rather than eutrophication is the most likely reason for the establishment and significant increase of thermophilic species, such as Pisidium moitessierianum in Lake Annecy.

Changements de la composition et de la structure des peuplements de mollusques de la partie nord du lac d'Annecy (Savoie, France) entre les années 1929-1939 et l'époque actuelle

Après qu'une étude de sa collection, des prélèvements malacologiques ont été effectués sur les mêmes stations. Une comparaison des données de Favre avec les données actuelles montre que : les changements cruciaux de la composition et de la structure des communautés se sont produits entre ces deux périodes ; les effets de l'amélioration de la qualité physico-chimique de l'eau due à la construction de système d'égouts, qui a commencé en 1961, étaient plus efficaces sur les communautés de la zone littorale que sur ceux de la zone des eaux profondes ; plusieurs espèces ont colonisé le lac d'Annecy, trois d'entre eux Dreissena polymorpha, Pisidium moitessierianum et Potamopyrgus antipodarum sont abondant dans la partie nord du lac. L'arrivée récente du P. moitessierianum, qui vit normalement dans de grands lacs de plaine et le potamon des fleuves, à la différence des autres Pisidium d'Annecy, pourrait être le résultat du changement climatique.

Les gastéropodes sont assez mal représentés et les espèces qui sont généralement des éléments dominants de la faune lacustre comme Valvata piscinalis, Bithynia tentaculata ou Planorbis carinatus sont peu abondantes. Les nombreux aménagements du littoral qui ont fortement réduit la superficie des ceintures végétales sont probablement responsables de cette situation. En revanche, les peuplements de Sphaeriidae, dominés par Pisidium subtruncatum, P. henslowanum et P. moitessierianum sont abondants et bien diversifiés.Au cours des 40 dernières années, 6 nouvelles espèces se sont installées dans le lac d'Annecy. Trois d'entre elles ont actuellement largement colonisé le plan d'eau. Il s'agit de Dreissena polymorpha, Potamopyrgus antipodarum et de Pisidium moitessierianum. L'apparition récente de cette dernière, qui vit seulement dans les grands lacs de plaine et le potamon des cours d'eau contrairement aux autres Pisidium du lac, pourrait être une conséquence du réchauffement climatique.

Anatomy and reproduction of viviparous Pisidium (ParaPisidium) reticulatum Kuiper, 1966: Implications for the phylogeny of Sphaeriidae (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Heterodonta)

Korniushin, Matthias GlaubrechtAbstract:Abstract The pea clams Sphaeriidae represent a major molluscan freshwater radiation with cosmopolitan distribution in all kinds of lotic and lentic habitats. Their phylogenetic relationships are still controversial, with comprehensive taxonomic sampling and examination of morphological characters still challenging. Here, based on rare and rediscovered original material, we study in detail the anatomy and aspects of brood protection of the African Pisidium reticulatum Kuiper, 1966. Representing the monotypic subgenus ParaPisidium Kuiper, 1966, this species is characterized by its peculiar combination of shell and anatomical features of potentially high phylogenetic relevance. While similar to other congeners in several anatomical characters (e.g. reduction of inhalant siphon and descending lamella of outer demibranch, simplified structure of intestine coil and nephridium), P. reticulatum differs from other Pisidium species in retaining both pairs of retractor muscles of the inhalant siphon, and particularly in its peculiar mode of brooding. The yolky eggs are relatively large (160–170 μm in diameter) and are incubated in the gill, albeit in the absence of the formation of brood pouches. During later stages of incubation the larvae are surrounded by large cells similar to nourishing cells in other sphaeriids and probably with similar function. This unique combination of reproductive features is hypothesized to represent an intermediate stage between the typical ovoviviparity of Euperidae and euviviparity (i.e. nourishment by the parent animal) as found exclusively in Sphaeriidae, the latter being characterized by the possession of closed brood pouches. Phylogenetic analyses based on a comprehensive set of morphological characters reveal ParaPisidium as the most basal lineage within a clade Pisidium. Evaluating the phylogenetic reconstructions based also on available molecular data for Sphaeriidae, we discuss alternative scenaria of (parallel) evolution of brood pouches and viviparity in this group.

Moitessier's pea clam Pisidium moitessierianum (Bivalvia, Sphaeriidae): a cryptogenic mollusc in the Great Lakes

MacisaacAbstract:Pisidium moitessierianum Paladilhe, 1866, a small pea clam native to Europe, was identified for the first time from the lower Great Lakes basin based on an examination of historical collections of Pisidium performed by V. Sterki in 1894 and 1903 and new material collected during 1997 and 1998. During recent surveys, P. moitessierianum individuals were found in the St. Clair River delta, Lake St. Clair and western Lake Erie, but were not detected in the Detroit River or western Lake Ontario. Pisidium moitessierianum was collected on sand, silty sand and mud substrata from water depths ranging between 0.6 and 5.4 m. Populations occurred at an average density of 51 ind. m−2 and included juveniles and adults. All individuals were less than 2.0 mm in length. We examined the structure of the umbos and hinge, surface sculpture and shape of the shell, and the anatomy of gills, mantle and nephridia in populations from the lower Great Lakes and Ukrainian inland basins (Dnieper River and Lake Beloye). The results indicated that the Great Lakes' pea clams match European specimens of P. moitessierianum in these conchological and anatomical characteristics. As with other nonindigenous sphaeriids in the Great Lakes, P. moitessierianum was likely introduced through shipping activities into the Great Lakes, possibly as early as the 1890s.

Review of the family Sphaeriidae (Mollusca: Bivalvia) of Australia, with the description of four new species

KorniushinAbstract:The sphaeriid fauna of Australia includes 17 species and subspecies, seven of them belonging to Musculium and ten to Pisidium. Subgeneric classification of Sphaerium problematicum Gabriel and identity of Cyclas egregia Gould are not defined. Most of the species are endemic, but one species found near Adelaide is probably an introduced Musculium lacustre (Muller). All native Musculium species are allotted to the subgenus Sphaerinova; three subgenera of Pisidium are represented (AfroPisidium and OdhneriPisidium by one species each and Euglesa by eight species). Two anatomically distinct and probably monophyletic groups are distinguished in Euglesa. Four species are described as new: Musculium quirindi n.sp., Pisidium (OdhneriPisidium) australiense n.sp., P. (Euglesa) ponderi n.sp. and P. (E.) centrale n.sp. Descriptions of shell and anatomy as well as the data on distribution and ecology are given for each species and an identification key is provided. Some phylogenetic and zoogeographical implications are discussed.

Fossil records of Palaearctic Pisidium species in tropical Africa (Bivalvia, Sphaeriidae)

KuiperAbstract:A collection of fossil shells of the genus Pisidium sampled in late glacial fl uvio-lacustrine deposits in the Rift Valley, Ethiopia, contains four species of Palaearctic origin and two (or perhaps three) African species. Pisidium species in tropical Africa One day in May 1976, in my apartment in the village of Garches near Paris, I en-joyed a visit of the charming Ms F. Alayne Street, geography student at the University of Cambridge. She participated in the Cambridge Geographical Exploration Unit of the Rift Valley (Grave et al., 1975) and was able to collect sediment samples contain-ing freshwater molluscs on the NE side of the Shala basin (labelled 0738 B2). The geological age of these sediments is prob-ably Late Pleistocene (9500 to 9000 years old). All specimens mentioned in this ar-ticle are preserved in the Kuiper collec-tion (now in the Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam). The three Pleistocene samples taken by Ms Street consist of about 700 shells and appear to contain at least six species of the genus Pisidium. Two of these (and maybe a third, undescribed one) are Afri-can, whereas four other species are un-doubtedly of Palaearctic origin. Slovak Academy of Sciences, 2017Co-Authors: Luboš BeranAbstract:This paper summarizes data about the distribution of freshwater molluscs in the Vysočina Region (6,800 km2). The region is one of the 14 regions of the Czech Republic, situated in its central part. The major part of this region consists of Českomoravská vrchovina (Bohemian-Moravian Highlands) with average elevation about 500 m a. s. l. Data about freshwater molluscs have been obtained by author’s field research since 1993 and from many published and unpublished papers, private collections, and collections in museums dating from 1850. Altogether, data about the occurrence of 49 species of freshwater molluscs (27 gastropods, 22 bivalves) were obtained. This number constitutes 62% of all aquatic mollusc species found in the Czech Republic. Data about the occurrence of individual species were used for the construction of distributional maps of records for three time periods (1851–1950, 1951–2000, 2001–2016). The major part of the data has originated for the last period. This clearly demonstrates a significant increase in the research intensity after 2000. The most common species, i.e. recorded at least in 40 mapping cells out of 72 covering the area to the Vysočina Region, were Galba truncatula, Radix auricularia, R. labiata, Lymnaea stagnalis, Gyraulus albus, Ancylus fluviatilis, Anodonta anatina, Pisidium casertanum, and P. subtruncatum. In contrast, Viviparus viviparus, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, Stagnicola corvus, Radix ampla, R. balthica, Planorbis planorbis, Gyraulus acronicus, Ferrissia fragilis, Unio tumidus, Pseudanodonta complanata, Sinanodonta woodiana, Pisidium amnicum, P. tenuilineatum, and Dreissena polymorpha have been found in less than five mapping cells and belong to rare species of this region. Except 29 common and widespread species, four species (Bythinella austriaca, Physa fontinalis, Pisidium milium, and P. supinum) belonging in the Red List of the Molluscs of the Czech Republic were recorded. Other six species are classified as Vulnerable (Radix ampla, Gyraulus acronicus, Segmentina nitida, Unio tumidus, Anodonta cygnea, and Pisidium hibernicum), three as Endangered (Unio crassus, Pseudanodonta complanata, and Pisidium amnicum), and two as Critically Endangered (Margaritifera margaritifera and Pisidium tenuilineatum)
