    Abstract:

    1. The Pitta-Pitta language is spoken mainly at Boulia, the chief encampment of the Pitta-Pitta blacks, as well as throughout the surrounding neighbourhood wherever any of their members may be scattered. It bears intimate relationship, as will subsequently be shown, to several other languages in close proximity, and ought rather to be considered in the light of one particular dialect out of many which together constitute the language of the Boulia district. Though the exact ethnographical limits of such a district must necessarily prove a matter of some difficulty, there is nevertheless a certain portion of country known to the Pitta-Pitta aboriginals as the “ooroo-ena mie-ena”— i.e. , “one-and-the-same country”—throughout which the various dialects spoken by the different tribes are pretty similar, and more or less mutually intelligible. 2. For present purposes, therefore, the Boulia District will be understood as comprising the area bounded:—On the north by Buckingham Downs, Mount Merlin, and Chatsworth; on the east by Tooleybuck country and Springvale; on the south by Cluny, Bedouri, and Sandringham; on the west by Carlo ( vel Mungerebar) and Glenormiston ( vel Idamea) country. In other words, it includes the district drained by the Hamilton, Burke, Wills, King's Creek, Upper Mulligan, Cottonbush Creek, and Middle Georgina Rivers, and measures approximately about 10,000 square miles. 3. The following Spelling , upon an English basis, has been adopted throughout the text.

    The Elegant Pitta (Pitta elegans) complex displays a remarkable diversity of morphological and bioacoustic traits across five taxa currently recognized as subspecies. They differ in plumage characteristics (such as red versus black belly patches; supercilium color and extent; and white versus black throats), in lifestyle (resident versus migratory) and in vocalizations. We investigated the morphological, bioacoustic and ecological differences across all taxa after recent studies demostrated the importance of these traits in recognizing biological species limits across Pittas. Morphometric analysis was carried out by measuring tarsus, wing, tail and bill lengths of 15 specimens at the Natural History Museum, UK, and plumages were inspected across 106 unique individuals from four different repositories. Bioacoustic analysis was based on 134 range-wide sound recordings. Two types of calls, territorial calls and alarm calls, were analyzed using different sets of parameters. Principal component analysis and the Isler Criterion were applied to the measurements. Playback trials were conducted to explore the levels of response of each taxon to the call types of the other taxa. The territorial call of concinna exhibits a distinct two-element motif, while elegans, maria and virginalis utter a three-element motif in which the first two elements are given in quick succession. On the other hand, vigorsii, produces both two-element and three-element motifs with longer breaks in between elements. As further corroborated by the playback trials, the three taxa elegans, virginalis and maria form a tight vocal cluster, whereas each concinna and vigorsii are distinct. The alarm call turned out to be less diagnostic even though most taxa did roughly separate into different vocal clusters. Morphometric analysis failed to produce strong differences, but plumage distinctions among multiple taxa are pronounced. We suggest splitting the Elegant Pitta into three biological species based on bioacoustic and—less so—plumage evidence: (1) Temminck’s Elegant Pitta P. elegans (including subspecies elegans, virginalis and maria), (2) Wallace’s Elegant Pitta P. concinna (monotypic), and (3) Banda Elegant Pitta P. vigorsii (monotypic).

    Abstract:

    The Banded Pitta Pitta guajana is widely distributed over the Greater Sunda Islands and Thai-Malay Peninsula. Up to six races have been described, but only three of them are distinct and were formerly considered different species: guajana from Java and Bali, schwaneri from Borneo, and irena from Sumatra and Thai-Malay Peninsula. We here revisit the species status of these three forms with morphometric, plumage and vocal data. We demonstrate pronounced differences in body part measurements and sex-specific coloration amongst all three taxa. Our bioacoustic comparisons also indicate differences in frequency and timing of the two main types of vocalisation among taxa, although further sampling needs to corroborate these findings. We further show that plumage differences—and probably also vocal differences—among Banded Pitta taxa are more pronounced than between sister species in three other Pitta complexes. We argue that the three Banded Pitta taxa should be classified as parapatric rather than allopatric, based on their frequent and ongoing contact during glacials when sea-levels drop to create land connections across their Sundaic range. Based on comparisons with other parapatric Pitta species, biological species status is recommended for the three Banded Pitta taxa. Ecological and habitat differences in the three Banded Pittas probably evolved to reduce disadvantageous hybridisation during extensive glacial periods of contact. taxa schwaneri from Borneo, guajana (including affinis) from Java and Bali as well as irena (including ripleyi) from Thai-Malay Peninsula and Sumatra are known to differ considerably in coloration, while vocal differences have been reported anecdotally but remain unanalysed. The two most recent treatises of the genus have both acknowledged that further analysis may demonstrate that the three taxon groups within P. guajana may need to be elevated to species rank (Lambert & Woodcock 1996, Erritzoe 2003). To shed light on the taxonomic status of the three widely recognised subspecies of Banded Pitta, we examined the series of P. guajana housed at BMNH. We carried out plumage examinations on subsets of the BMNH series. We also measured various body parts in the same BMNH subsets and present the first statistical comparison of mensural data in Banded Pittas. Furthermore, we collected sound recordings of wild Banded Pittas from throughout their range over the years, and complement this collection with recordings from colleagues. We use this material to investigate the taxonomic classification of the taxa that are currently recognised as members of P. guajana.

Virechan karma is one of the important bio-purification measures which is indicated for complete elimination of Pitta dosa not only in pathological stage but also in physiological stage as explained under seasonal regimen of autumn season. This paper serves as a collection of information on mode of action of virechan karma on ayurvedic and modern parameter.

    Welcome to the world of Ayurveda, in present era, everybody is looking towards Ayurveda for health care. Besides the medicine, we are having one special principle which other disease are not having, i.e., Swasthasya Swasthya Rakshanam. Swasthya is a state when an individual in a state of equilibrium of three dosas, normal functioning of the thirteen agnis (digestion and metabolism), the dhatus and malas and he is in the state of sensorial, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing, finally a clear and bright state of mind, body and soul. Dosas, dhatus, malas, srotus and agni etc. are basic fundamental of our classical science. In Ayurveda, Pitta is representative of agni in body. As in outer word, fire transform the substances to different specific forms, likewise Pitta changes food taken and rasadhatu into some nutritious terms, by using which rest of dhatus get nutrition. Function of Pitta in the body is as same as of agni. Therefore, in this article a comparative study of Pachak Pitta with Jathragni are explained.

    Ayurveda the ancient holistic science of India is treating neurological diseases since its inception. Neurological problem in Ayurveda described mainly in the context of Vatavyadhi. Ayurvedic treatments for neurological disorders will aim to rectify this Vata imbalance and bring the Vata dosha in harmony with Pitta and Kapha dosha so as to eliminate the disease. People worldwide are affected by neurological disorders. There are over 600 known neurological disorders and conditions that affect the human nervous system and for many of them treatment options are extremely limited. The aim of this study is to analyze the different neurological problems described in Ayurveda and their treatment perspective. Recent advancement of Ayurvedic Clinical Research shows that so many incurable neurological problems can be successfully treated by Ayurvedic medicines and Panchakarma therapies.
