    Abstract:

    Caitlin Rosenthal's Accounting for Slavery is a study of accounting practices in the large Plantations of the late eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British West Indies and United States. The first two chapters, which review Plantation accounting positions and techniques, reveal the early existence of rich and multifaceted information systems in the Plantation Economy of the British West Indies. The institution of slavery protected planters against the turnover of labor that industrial factories experienced in the North of the United States, and this, Rosenthal argues, facilitated the turning of human lives into numbers—not just in the prescriptive literature but in everyday Plantation management. Such quantification allowed absentee planters to act at a distance. It morally desensitized the managers and tied together the different modalities of control that they enjoyed over enslaved people's lives. [first paragraph]

    Abstract:

    Social relations on the Plantations of the South Carolina and Georgia Lowcountry were structured by a series of classifications which in turn expressed and codified Plantation ideology. Racism, paternalism, and emergent capitalism have all been demonstrated through archaeological investigations as major constellations within this ideological universe. The expression of these social and ideological relations occurred symbolically within the Plantations, as evidenced by settlement systems, architecture, and material remains. This ideology was also expressed in the documentary record in the ways in which planters classified their slaves and other social groups. This article considers the archaeology of ideology among the Plantations of the Georgia and South Carolina Lowcountry as expressed through symbolization and classification and examines the evolution of Plantation ideology from the 17th century to the end of the Antebellum era. It suggests that the social and ideological structure shifted from one based on racial classification to one dependent on labor specialization and social stratification, in response to changes in the Lowcountry’s Plantation Economy.

    As the continued health of the Plantation sector in Sri Lanka remains a vital part of the Sri Lankan Economy, so too must the continued well-being of the people working and living in the estates remain an important concern. The tea industry must confront several challenges in the near future, some which have remained unaddressed for several decades and others that are only now becoming apparent. This paper analyses the current challenges and opportunities facing the people involved in the Plantation Economy in Sri Lanka – most specifically, the Up-country Tamils, who comprise most of the labour force. Arguably, the Plantation system is an unethical economic scheme engendering a parallel political structure to reinforce the Plantation Economy.     SUMMARY A critical appraisal of the Plantation Economy model (PEM)—a species of dependency analysis which concentrates on the impact of imperial domination on the export-propelled economies of the Caribbean, as metropolitan interests shift from plunder to production for trade. Whilst the PEM makes a substantial contribution to the analysis of Caribbean society, it has marked limitations in its predictive weakness, its overall emphasis on structural transformation, and its failure to specify the socio-political divisions created by the Plantation Economy, or to anticipate food and resource shortages relative to population. In fact, since 1975, all the Caribbean economies have suffered from balance of payments crises and high inflation. RESUMENEl modelo economico de plantacion y el Caribe Se hace una evaluacion critica del modelo economico de plantacion, que es una especie de analisis de dependencia que se concentra en las consecuencias de la dominacion imperial sobre las economias del Caribe dependientes de las exportaciones, a medida que los intereses metropolitanos varian de la expoliacion a la produccion para el comercio.
