    Abstract:

    The Loess Plateau Region has experienced severe soil erosion since the Ming Dynasty, and has become one of the most severe soil erosion Regions in the world because of complex landforms, high soil erodibility, concentrated and high-intensity rainfall, and long-term human activity. This chapter outlines the general situation and Regional distribution of soil erosion in the Region. The soil erosion characteristics are described in detail, including water erosion, wind erosion and wind–water coupling erosion. This chapter also highlights the driving factors of water erosion, wind erosion and dust storms, including climate, soil and parent materials, topography and landforms, vegetation, and human activity. Finally, there is a brief treatment of sediment delivery to the Yellow River and its main tributaries.

    Theileriosis continues to threaten the livestock industry worldwide, but comprehensive epidemiological surveys for this disease have not been conducted in the Tibet Plateau Region, China. In this study, we screened 154 cattle blood samples from the Tibet Plateau Region (Lhasa, Lhoka, and Tianzhu), China, for detection of Theileria pathogens by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with species-specific primers. The results revealed that the prevalence was 6.9 % (2/29) for Theileria orientalis and 27.6 % (8/29) for Theileria sinensis in Lhasa, 0 % (0/30) for T. orientalis and 26.7 % (8/30) for T. sinensis in Lhoka, and 0 % (0/95) for T. orientalis and 30.5 % (29/95) for T. sinensis in Tianzhu. Interestingly, Theileria luwenshuni, which was a previously reported pathogenic Theileria sp. in sheep and goats, was detected in blood samples from cattle and yaks for the first time, with a prevalence of 10 % (3/30) in Lhoka and 1.1 % (1/95) in Tianzhu. No other Theileria sp. was detected in these samples. T. sinensis and T. orientalis infections were detected in cattle and yaks, and T. luwenshuni was discovered for the first time in cattle and yaks in the Tibet Plateau Region, China.

  • Organic Recycling for Soil Quality Conservation in a Sub‐tropical Plateau Region

    The long-term effect of organic recycling on some aspects of quality in a lowland rice soil of an Indian Plateau Region was studied. The experiment was set up at the agricultural experimental farm of the Indian Statistical Institute, Giridih, Bihar, India. Two rice cultivars, and treatments with four organic supplements (cowdung manure, Leuceana leaves, decomposed farm residue and Sesbania), chemical fertilizers (urea, superphosphate and muriate of potash) and no input were arranged in a factorial randomized block design. Organic supplements improved soil quality parameters such as water holding capacity, total organic C, microbial biomass C, urease and acid phosphatase activities of soils in comparison to chemical fertilizers and no input. Among the organic supplements, cowdung manure gave significantly higher organic C (1.39%), microbial biomass C (276.46 μg g−1 dry soil), urease activity (32.79 and 21.22 μg urea hydrolized g−1 dry soil h−1 at 37 °C by the buffer and non-buffer method, respectively) and acid phosphatase activity (1.99 μmol p-nitrophenol released g−1 dry soil h−1 at 37 °C) than the others. The conversion of organic C into biomass C (2.46%) was highest in Leuceana-treated soil. Das Experiment wurde auf einer Versuchsfarm im Trockenland, indisches Statistikinstitut, Giridih, Bihar, Indien durchgefuhrt. Zwei Reiskultivare, vier organische Beimengungen (Kuhdung, Leuceana-Blatter, zersetzte organische Farmruckstande und Sesbania), chemische Dunger (Harnstoff, Superphosphat, Kaliumchlorid) und eine unbehandelte Kontrolle wurden in einem faktoriellen, randomisierten Blockversuch gepruft. Die organischen Beimengungen verbesserten die Bodenqualitatsparameter wie Wasserhaltekapazitat, gesamtorganischeC, mikrobielle Biomasse-C, Urease und saure Phosphataktivitaten des Bodens im Vergleich zu chemischen Dungern und keiner Behandlung. Von den organischen Beimengungen zeigte Kuhdung signifikant die hochste organische C-Menge (1,39%), mikrobielle Biomasse-C (276,46 μg g−1 Trockenboden), Ureaseaktivitaten (32,79 und 21,22 μg hydrolisierten Harnstoff je g Trockenboden bei 37 °C) mit Puffer-und Nichtpuffermethoden und eine Abgabe von saurer Phosphatase-Aktivitat (1,99 mol p-nitrophenol je g Trockenboden/h bei 37 °C). Die Konversion von organischem-C in Biomasse-C (2,46%) war am hochsten in mit Leuceana behandeltem Boden.

  • Seasonality and Interannual Variability of the Westerly Jet in the Tibetan Plateau Region

    Abstract In this study, 40-yr ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-40) data are used for the description of the seasonal cycle and the interannual variability of the westerly jet in the Tibetan Plateau Region. To complement results based on the analysis of monthly mean horizontal wind speeds, an occurrence-based jet climatology is constructed by identifying the locations of the jet axes at 6-hourly intervals throughout 1958–2001. Thus, a dataset describing the highly transient and localized features of jet variability is obtained. During winter and summer the westerly jet is located, respectively, to the south and north of the Tibetan Plateau. During the spring and autumn seasons there are jet transitions from south to north and vice versa. The median dates for these transitions are 28 April and 12 October. The spring transition is associated with large interannual variations, while the fall transition occurs more reliably within a 3-week period.
