    Abstract:

    Tributyltin (TBT) has been widely employed in marine anti-fouling paints as a biocide, although it represents a serious risk, particularly in estuarine and coastal water/sediment ecosystems. In this study, the embryotoxic effects of TBT and its degradation products, dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT), were analyzed during the development of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus from post-fertilization to the Pluteus stage, to better clarify ecotoxicological impact. The embryotoxicity of butyltins is concentration-dependent and increases proportionally with number of butyl groups. Significant growth reduction was observed at TBT concentrations as low as 0.01 μg l−1; 1 μg l−1 was the maximum concentration allowing embryos to reach the Pluteus stage at 48 h post-fertilization. Development was blocked at the morula or blastula stage with higher TBT concentrations. DBT and MBT are less toxic: slowed development and a decrease in Pluteus size occurred at 10 μg l−1 DBT and 0.5 mg l−1 MBT. Effects on both skeletal deposition and blocked embryonic development are suggested to be due to the interference of organotin compounds with intracellular calcium homeostasis.

    Abstract:

    The type specimens of Pluteus dianae and P. punctatus from the Czech Republic were studied morphologically and molecularly. New collections identified by nrITS sequence analyses extend the distribution of P. dianae to Denmark, European Russia, and the Asian part of Turkey and of P. punctatus to Sweden. The application of these names is discussed; both belong in the P. plautus complex, and data on European and North American taxa in this complex are summarised and compared with P. dianae and P. punctatus. Pluteus aestivus is considered a nomen dubium.

  • Pluteus bizioi (Agaricales, Pluteaceae), a new species from Italy

    Abstract:

    The authors describe the macro-, microscopic and ecological features of Pluteus bizioi , a new taxon belonging to the genus Pluteus Fr. The species was found on alluvial soil, in an area close to the bank of the Isonzo (Soca) river where trunks and branches of willows had been stacked. This taxon is characterized by a brown pileus with dark brown or blackish scales, utriform cheilocystidia and the presence of pleurocystidia and caulocystidia. The description is illustrated with photographs of the basidiomata in habitat and photographs of the main microscopic features. Molecular data (nrITS) support the recognition of this new species.

  • Observations on Pluteus (Pluteaceae) diversity in South Siberia, Russia: morphological and molecular data

    Abstract:

    A study of Pluteus collections from the southern region of Siberia, Russia, revealed the occurrence of 20 species. One species (Pluteus umbrosoides) and one form (P. tomentosulus f. brunneus) are proposed as new. Pluteus rugosidiscus is a new record in Eurasia and P. velutinus is recorded for the first time in Russia. Most species in the studied territory occur in coniferous or mixed forests. Until now, there have been only sporadic finds of Pluteus in the sub-taiga zone and no finds in the steppe zone. Detailed morphological descriptions, illustrations and drawings of microstructures for new, rare and interesting taxa are provided. Phylogenetic analyses inferred from the internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) were conducted for species delimitation and for comparisons with closely related taxa.

    Abstract:

    Two new species of Pluteus section Pluteus , P. griseodiscus and P. purpureofuscus , are described from China. Pluteus griseodiscus is characterized by the pale basidiomata, non-pigmented lamellar edges, thick-walled cheilocystidia and the presence of caulocystidia. Pluteus purpureofuscus is characterized by a purple-brown pileus, presence of clamp-connections, and growth on coniferous wood. The phylogenetic position of both species is also discussed based on nrITS data.

  • Pluteus Section Hispidoderma in Brazil with New Records Based on Morphological and Molecular Data

    Abstract:

    Abstract A revision of Pluteus section Hispidoderma occurring in Brazil is presented showing the occurrence of eight species considered certainly known in the country: P. fibrillosus, P. chusqueae, P. longistriatus, P. maculosipes, P. neochrysaegis, P. rimosellus, P. varzeicola and P. velutinus. Molecular analyses using ITS sequences showed the phylogenetic position of P. cf. fernandezianus, P. fibrillosus, P. longistriatus and P. velutinus. Pluteus fibrillosus, P. maculosipes and P. velutinus represent new records from Brazil. A type revision of P. varzeicola is also presented.

    In this study we investigated expression of the SM30(A–F) gene family encoding Strongylocentrotus intermedius spicule matrix proteins during the normal and regenerative Pluteus II stage (three pairs of arms). We found that SiSM30A and SiSM30B genes are expressed at high levels in the normal Pluteus II sea urchin. SiSM30A is expression was also significantly upregulated in the reparative Pluteus II stage 3 hours after damage. Conversely, SiSM30B was downregulated during the reparative Pluteus II stage. Our findings reveal a substantial similarity between the activity of SiSM30A and SiSM30B activity in the processes of regenerative growth during the Pluteus II stage and during normal development at the prism stage in Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. On the basis of our findings, we propose that normal developmental mechanisms corresponding to the preceding developmental stage are reactivated during Pluteus regeneration.
