Do lagoon area sediments act as traps for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons
Chemosphere, 2014Co-Authors: Mauro Marini, Emanuela FrapicciniAbstract:The coastal lagoons are vulnerable systems, located between the land and the sea, enriched by both marine and continental inputs and are among the most productive aquatic ecosystems. The purpose of this work is to understand the influence of the lagoon area sediments on the behaviour of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, through the adsorption coefficient determination. In fact, the sorption of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons is an important process because it governs the fate, transport, bioavailability and toxicity of these compounds in sediments. It has been observed that the adsorption of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in a transitional system is the outcome of different factors, such as their sources and physicochemical properties, salinity and sediment composition, hydrology and environmental conditions. The results showed that transitional areas contribute to the Polycyclic Aromatic hydrocarbon accumulation in the sediment turning it into a trap.

Some of them are acutely toxic, mutagenic or carcinogenic. The group of fungi which includes Aspergillus ochraceus, Cunninghamella elegans, Cunninghamella echinulata, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, Bjerkandera sp., Trametes versicolor and the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae have the ability to oxidize or transform Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and render them non-toxic.

Organic Letters, 2016Co-Authors: Jayanta Samanta, Ramalingam NatarajanAbstract:The synthesis of a 3-fold symmetric cofacial organic cage (COC) through Cu(I)-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition is reported. The COC can function as an efficient receptor for carcinogenic Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons to intercalate them in its intrinsic cavity through donor–acceptor and π···π stacking interactions. The association constants (Ka) are in the range of 3.7 × 104 to 1.3 × 106 M–1. X-ray diffraction analysis authenticated that the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are intercalated in the interior of the COC.
