    I am immensely grateful to William Outhwaite for commenting on my book The ‘Postmodern Turn’ in the Social Sciences (Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan, 2015). I should stress at the outset that I agree with most of the points he makes in his commentary, which I find very insightful, thought-provoking, and constructive. Hence, any reader expecting to be entertained by a cockfight between book author and book reviewer will be disappointed. Let me take this opportunity to reflect on some of the main issues raised in Outhwaite’s inspiring review.

    The systematic analysis of the impact of the ‘Postmodern Turn’ on the social sciences is a contradictory endeavour. Supporters of Postmodern thought are suspicious of the imposition of ‘logocentric’1 principles — such as ‘structure’, ‘coherence’, and ‘conclusiveness’. From their perspective, the attempt to give a comprehensive and thematically organized account of Postmodern thought, permitting to draw rationally guided and conceptually sophisticated conclusions from such a methodical undertaking, constitutes — at best — an amusing investigative irony or — at worst — a misguided explorative venture whose motivational starting point is little more than a contradiction in terms.

    Abstract:

    To better address differences and complexities of social life articulated through the Postmodern Turn, grounded theory is being regenerated and updated. Based on Strauss's ecological frameworks in his social worlds and arenas theory, I offer situational maps and analyses as innovative supplements to the basic social process analyses characteristic of traditional grounded theory. There are three kinds of analytic maps: maps of situations including all the key human and nonhuman elements, maps of social worlds and arenas, and maps of positionality along salient analytic axes. This article introduces all three kinds of maps and explicates one—situational maps—as a means of coherently elucidating and analyzing some of the complexities and instabilities of social life.

    As a reaction against the modern philosophy of science,which detached from the critique,history and practices of science,radical historicism and new pragmatism made the philosophy of science Turn to the Postmodern camp,constructed the Postmodern image of science,which dissolved the rationality,empirical foundation and reality of science as well as scientific prestige in culture.Although Postmodern philosophy of science reasonably revealed the great importannt role the humanistic and social factors played in scientific enterprise,it also opened up the gate for relativism and nihilism,which would impoverish the creative driving force of the whole human civilization in the long run,thus failing to live up to the cultural promise of Postmodernism that aimed at the actualization of the human creativity and freedom.

    Over the past decade, Zygmunt Bauman has published a series of books that sketch out a Postmodern Turn in society, theory, culture, ethics and politics. Changes in contemporary society and culture, Bauman argues, require new modes of thought, morality and politics to appropriately respond to the new social conditions. This requires a reconfiguration of critical social theory and new tasks for a Postmodern sociology. Bauman thus poses fundamental challenges to contemporary social theory and provides an original and provocative post-modern version of the sociological imagination, developing sketches of the fundamental social and cultural changes of our time, and the ways that theory and politics must be changed to creatively map and democratically respond to these questions.
