Down from the treetops: red langur (Presbytis rubicunda) terrestrial behavior

Ehlers SmithAbstract:Using direct observations and camera traps at eight sites across Indonesian Borneo we show how red langurs ( Presbytis rubicunda ) are more terrestrial than previously believed, regularly coming to the ground. This unusual behavior has been found at six of the eight sites surveyed. We find that red langurs come to the ground more frequently in disturbed forests, specifically ones which have been impacted by logging, fire, and hunting, though more data are needed to confirm this as a direct correlation. We also found a trend towards decreased ground use with increased elevation of the habitat. When on the ground, red langurs are predominantly engaged in feeding (50% direct observations, 61% camera traps) and traveling (29% direct observations, 13% camera traps). Red langurs are found on the ground throughout the day, at similar times to activity periods of the apex predator, the Sunda clouded leopard ( Neofelis diardi ). We suggest that ground use by red langurs could be an adaptation to disturbed forest to exploit additional food sources and to facilitate travel.

Given the abundance and even distribution of leaves in forested habitats, folivorous primates generally spend less time feeding; more time resting; have shorter day ranges; and require smaller home ranges than frugivorous primates. To test the influence of frugivory on ranging behavior, we established the activity budget and home-range size and use in a highly frugivorous population of the Borneo-endemic colobine, Presbytis rubicunda, within Sabangau tropical peat-swamp forest, Central Kalimantan, and examined relationships between fruit availability and ranging patterns. We collected 6848 GPS locations and 10,702 instantaneous focal behavioral scans on a single group between January and December 2011. The group had the largest home-range size recorded in genus Presbytis (kernel density estimates: mean = 108.3 ± SD 3.8 ha, N = 4 bandwidths). The annual activity budget comprised 48 ± SD 4.0% resting; 29.3 ± SD 3.9% feeding, 14.2 ± SD 2.5% traveling, and 0.4 ± SD 0.4% social behaviors. Mean monthly day-range length was the highest recorded for any folivorous primate (1645 ± SD 220.5 m/d). No significant relationships existed between ranging variables and fruit availability, and ranging behaviors did not vary significantly across seasons, potentially owing to low fluctuations in fruit availability. Our results suggest that colobine monkeys maintain larger than average ranges when high-quality food resources are available. Their extensive range requirements imply that protecting large, contiguous tracts of habitat is crucial in future conservation planning for Presbytis rubicunda.

Mixed-species association among malaysian primates during the covid-19 outbreak in Genting Highlands, Peninsular Malaysia

The observations were carried out at Genting Highlands between 14-24th April 2020 using ad libitum sampling. Five Genting Highlands primate species were observed at approximately 66 observation hours which include Symphalangus syndactylus (siamang), Trachypithecus obscurus obscurus (dusky langur), Presbytis siamensis siamensis (Malayan pale-thighed surili), Macaca nemestrina (southern pig-tailed macaque), and Macaca fascicularis (long-tailed macaque). Primates in Genting Highlands were seen interacting among themselves during the third phase of the MCO. Siamangs, dusky langurs, and long-tailed macaques were observed sharing space and interacting in an old section of Genting View Resorts that is currently under renovation. Malayan pale- thighed langurs were also observed approaching this area. During the third phase of the MCO, siamangs, dusky langurs, long-tailed macaques, and pig-tailed macaques consumed fruits of the fig tree (Ficus benjamina), which last for only one week. Strict controls on public movement are believed to have created environmental conditions that enabled Genting Highlands primates to move and interact freely among themselves

However, with less than 500 individuals reported to be surviving in Johor, their behaviour and ecology remain unknown among primatologists. This study provides the first systematic data on the daily activity budget of the species in Malaysia. Scan sampling technique was used to observe and record P. femoralis behaviour with 10 min interval starting from February 2018 to November 2018. The results are based on 186 h and 20 min of direct observation in the wild. The animals spent most of the time for resting (43 ± 13%) followed by moving (26 ± 9%), feeding (26 ± 7%), social activities (4 ± 3%), and others (1 ± 0%). Seasonality significantly influences the activity budget of the animals resulting in increased resting and moving in the non-fruiting season. Feeding activities decreased in the non-fruiting season compared with the fruiting season, whereas social activities remained the same. We concluded that the daily activity budget of P. femoralis in this study portrays comparable behavior to other langurs in Malaysia that would help in conservation and management of the species in terms of understanding temporal and spatial requirements of P. femoralis in a highly fragmented habitat

Here we describe the predation of Schlegel’s banded langur (P. neglectus) by domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) and unsuccessful predation of dusky leaf monkey (T. obscurus) by crested hawk-eagle (Nisaetus cirrhatus). Our observation reported two chasing attempts followed by two successful predations of banded langur by domestic dogs and an unsuccessful predation on dusky leaf monkey (T. obscurus) juvenile by crested hawk-eagle (N. cirrhatus). This is the first ever report on predation of banded langur (P. neglectus) by terrestrial animal and act as a significance standpoint in ecology and conservation of langur

Phylogenetic position of Tarsius bancanus based on partial Cytochrome b DNA Sequences

Lee, Mahani M.c.Abstract:This study was carried out to ascertain the molecular phylogenetic position of Tarsius bancanus among Malaysian primates based on the partial of Cytochrome b (cyt b) gene sequences. A total of five samples of Tarsius bancanus from Sabah, Malaysia, were used in this study. Several other Malaysian primates were also included in the analysis (Leaf monkeys (Presbytis and Trachypithecus), Macaques (Macaca), Siamang (Symphalangus) and Slow loris (Nycticebus). We also included DNA sequences of several prosimians (Galago, Cheirogaleus, Daubentonia, Indri, Avahi, Lemur and Lepilemur) from GenBank. In addition, one individual of orang utan (Pongo pygmaeus) and human (Homo sapiens) were used as outgroups to root the tree. All taxa were analysed using character method (Maximum Parsimony, MP) and distance method (Neighbor-Joining, NJ). From the 375 examined characters, 43.2% were constant characters while 4.8% characters were parsimony uninformative whereas 52.0% characters were parsimony informative. Tree topologies discriminated three major clades in which primitive primates, Old World Monkeys and Anthropoids belongs to their own monophyletic clades. Both MP and NJ trees showed that T. bancanus was placed in primitive primates group
