    Abstract:

Hybrid yarn was produced by twisting silk with nylon covered lycra yarn. Silk of 20 D in warp and hybrid yarn in weft was woven to develop lustrous woven stretch fabrics for sari blouse. Silk and hybrid yarn fabrics were produced in three different weaves namely plain, crepe and sateen. An in-depth study was carried out to understand the effect of weave on thermal Comfort; low stress mechanical properties, total hand value and stretch properties. Nine blouses (3 samples× 3 figures) were constructed from three different woven stretch materials for fit assessment and objective Pressure Comfort test. The effect of fabric weave, low stress mechanical properties, total hand value and stretch properties on fit and Pressure Comfort of silk/hybrid yarn stretch fabrics were analyzed. Sateen weave silk/hybrid yarn stretch fabric shows higher total hand value, stretch properties and better thermal Comfort properties. Sateen and crepe weave stretch fabrics provided good fit. Sateen weave fabric exerted lower clothing Pressure value in the range of 3-12 mmHg at all body locations in standing position and in different postures.

  • influence of fabric mechanical property on clothing dynamic Pressure distribution and Pressure Comfort on tight fit sportswear
    Sen-i Gakkaishi, 2004
Co-Authors: Anthony S W Wong, Yi Li, Xin Zhang
    Abstract:

Clothing Pressure distribution in tight-fit sportswear was simulated by using numerical computational method. Three sets of tight-fit sportswears were simulated on the basis of their mechanical properties. In addition, a 3D human body was also simulated in order to investigate its interaction with sportswear in the wearing process. Result shows that Pressure increases significantly around the waist girth until it passes through body pelvis during the wearing process. Meanwhile, Pressure begins to increase for other tested body locations. Based on body contour plot, we found that Pressure distribution was not uniformly distributed and high-Pressure zone was concentrated around the waist girth at the end of the wearing process. The simulated Pressure has no significant difference (p > 0.05) with the experimental Pressure measurements. Furthermore, subjective Pressure Comfort rating was linearly correlated with the simulation, suggesting the simulation method can provide reliable prediction in term of Pressure Comfort. From the tight-fit sportswear manufacturer's point of view, simulation result would help them to satisfy consumers' physiological and psychological needs in term of Pressure Comfort at a lower cost.

  • Pressure variations on a train – Where is the threshold to railway passenger disComfort?
    Applied ergonomics, 2012
Co-Authors: Sandra Schwanitz, M. Wittkowski, Vinzent Rolny, Mathias Basner
    Abstract:

Abstract The implementation of recent guidelines for tunnel construction in Germany leads to extended air Pressure variations inside trains and reduces Pressure Comfort for railway passengers. A questionnaire survey with 262 passengers revealed that Pressure variations are rated less important for riding Comfort than climatic and spatial aspects (study 1). A laboratory experiment (study 2) in the Pressure chamber at the DLR Institute of Aerospace Medicine with 31 subjects (mean age = 37.7, SD = 12.7; 51.6% male) investigated the effects of systematic Pressure variations on disComfort. The Pressure changes (Pressure increases and decreases) ranged from 1 to 100 mbar and were realized within 1–100 s. We derived thresholds for healthy passengers by means of random effects linear and logistic regression analysis. Logistic dose–response curves revealed amplitude/time combinations leading to a certain percentage of passengers perceiving disComfort (e.g. 50% dissatisfied passengers regarding a Pressure increase of approximately 30 mbar within 5 s). The findings may help design engineers to meet passengers' Comfort requirements.

  • Continuous assessments of Pressure Comfort on a train -- a field-laboratory comparison.
    Applied Ergonomics, 2012
Co-Authors: Sandra Schwanitz, M. Wittkowski, Vinzent Rolny, Christina Samel, Mathias Basner
    Abstract:

Abstract Pressure variations on a train predominantly occur while trains are passing through tunnels. These aerodynamic effects may give rise to aural disComfort in railway passengers. We conducted a field study on the high speed railway track Cologne-Frankfurt/Main as well as a simulation study in our Pressure chamber TITAN (DLR-Institute of Aerospace Medicine) with 31 subjects (mean age = 37.7, SD = 12.7; 51.6% male) to investigate Pressure Comfort for passengers. Continuous assessments of Pressure events using sliders and retrospective assessments were acquired. Pressure variations were mostly tolerated. A comparison of field and laboratory setting revealed high congruency of continuous as well as retrospective assessments. A generalized estimating equation model identified Pressure change attributes contributing to passengers' disComfort. Beside attributes of instantaneous Pressure changes (e.g. high amplitudes, short durations), Pressure events of the recent past significantly influenced current disComfort. Design engineers may use these findings to improve train and tunnel design.

  • Railway passengers`Comfort sensations due to Pressure variations on a train
    2011
Co-Authors: Sandra Schwanitz, M. Wittkowski, Vinzent Rolny, Mathias Basner
    Abstract:

Upcoming changes in tunnel construction in Germany will lead to extended Pressure variations while riding on a train. Thus, a reduced Pressure Comfort for passengers is implicated. As part of the project “Next Generation Train” at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) an experimental study was conducted investigating the individual Comfort sensations of railway passengers. The laboratory experiment with N = 31 participants aged 19 to 71 (M = 37.7, SD = 12.7) was realised in the Pressure chamber TITAN of the DLR-Institute of Aerospace Medicine. We investigated the effects of systematically varied Pressure alterations on the evaluation of Comfort using a 7-point rating scale. Compared to existing Comfort criteria, our study focused on a wider range of Pressure amplitudes and a longer duration of Pressure changes. Random effects linear and logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine dose-response relationships regarding Pressure changes and resulting Comfort assessments. Higher Pressure amplitudes, shorter durations and an increase in Pressure compared to a decrease caused higher disComfort. Pressure variation disComfort thresholds are helpful in establishing at what Pressure amplitude/duration combinations countermeasures shall be taken to ensure passengers’ satisfaction. The findings may inform decision makers on the forthcoming requirements of railway passenger Comfort
