    Abstract:

    The increasing volume of picture posting to SNS (Social Network Services) has led to a growing incidence of Privacy Invasion issues. We analyze the factors behind Invasions of Privacy in a large archive of tweets accumulated over a long period, and extract communities that provide a shared interpretation of Privacy. We then propose a new service that analyzes new picture posts to predict the communities in which Invasions of Privacy are liable to occur and forewarn users who are liable to become invader or violated of Privacy Invasion.

    Abstract:

    A method is proposed for preventing Privacy Invasion through unintentional capture of facial images. Prevention methods such as covering the face and painting particular patterns on the face are effective but hinder face-to-face communication. The proposed method overcomes this problem through the use of a device worn on the face that transmits near-infrared signals that are picked up by camera image sensors, which makes the face in captured images undetectable. The device is similar in appearance to a pair of eyeglasses, and the signals cannot be seen by the human eye, so face-to-face communication is not hindered. Testing of a prototype "Privacy visor" showed that it can effectively prevent Privacy Invasion via face detection by corrupting the facial images.

  • Willing to pay for quality personalization? Trade-off between quality and Privacy

    Abstract:

    Online personalization presents recommendations of products and services based on customers’ past online purchases or browsing behavior. Personalization applications reduce information overload and provide value-added services. However, their adoption is hindered by customers’ concerns about information Privacy. This paper reports on research undertaken to determine whether a high-quality recommendation service will encourage customers to use online personalization. We collected data through a series of online experiments to examine the impacts of Privacy and quality on personalization usage and on users’ willingness to pay and to disclose information when using news and financial services. Our findings suggest that under certain circumstances, perceived personalization quality can outweigh the impact of Privacy concerns. This implies that service providers can improve the perceived quality of personalization services being offered in order to offset customer Privacy concerns. Nevertheless, the impact of perceived quality on personalization usage is weaker for customers who have experienced Privacy Invasion in the past. The results show that customers who are likely to use online personalization are also likely to pay for the service. This finding suggests that, despite Privacy concerns, there is an opportunity for businesses to monetize high-quality personalization.

  • How to agentify the Internet-of-Things?

    Despite the smooth weaving of the Internet-of-Things into people's daily lives, many challenges, such as diversity and multiplicity of things' development technologies and communication standards, and users' reluctance due to Privacy Invasion, are slowing down this weaving. This paper tackles the challenge of things' passive nature that has confined them into a data-supplier role. Empowering things with additional capabilities would make them proactive so, that, they can for instance, reach out to peers exposing collaborative attitude and (un)form dynamic communities when necessary. In this paper, this empowerment takes shape through thing agentification that relies on norms (specialized into business and social) to regulate the operations of things and commitments to ensure thing compliance with these norms. No-compliance would lead to sanctions over things, which should affect their credibility and reputation. A proof-of-concept and missing-child case study technically illustrate thing agentification.

  • A guiding famework for vetting the Internet of Things

    Like any emerging and disruptive technology, multiple obstacles are slowing down the Internet of Things (IoT) expansion for instance, multiplicity of things’ standards, users’ reluctance and sometimes rejection due to Privacy Invasion, and limited IoT platform interoperability. IoT expansion is also accompanied by the widespread use of mobile apps supporting anywhere, anytime service provisioning to users. By analogy to vetting mobile apps, this paper addresses the lack of principles and techniques for vetting IoT devices (things) in preparation for their integration into mission-critical systems. Things have got vulnerabilities that should be discovered and assessed through proper device vetting. Unfortunately, this is not happening. Rather than sensing a nuclear turbines steam level, a thing could collect some sensitive data about the turbine without the knowledge of users and leak these data to third parties. This paper presents a guiding framework that defines the concepts of, principles of, and techniques for thing vetting as a pro-active response to potential things vulnerabilities.
