Differences in the salivary effects of wild-caught versus colonized Phlebotomus papatasi (Diptera: Psychodidae) on the development of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in BALB/c mice.

In contrast, preimmunization of mice with SGH of wild-caught female P. papatasi did not confer protection against L. major co-inoculated with the same type of SGH. Similarly, SGH from recently colonized (F1) female P. papatasi did not protect mice against L. major. These results suggest that when developing a sand fly saliva-based vaccine, the natural vector populations should be considered.

The average productivity (percentage of eggs laid that were reared to adults) over six generations at 26–27 and at 29–30°C was 44.08 and 59.53%, respectively. The maximum productivity was 69.5%. The average developmental time over six generations at 26–27 and at 29–30°C was 35 and 26 d, respectively. The minimum developmental time from egg to adults was 25 d. The Tunisian strain of P. papatasi can reproduce autogenously or anautogenously, depending on the availability of a suitable bloodmeal source.

The densities of P. papatasi were found to peak in early spring and again in the autumn. The lowest densities were observed in August. Prevalence of ZCL in the governorate of Sidi Bouzid peaks in December, 3 to 3.5 mo after the fall sand fly population peak, suggesting a close temporal association with the abundance of P. papatasi.

Description of Jezekiella patera gen. et sp. nov. from Europe (Diptera: Psychodidae)

Based on some character states found in this new genus (e.g. spiniform sensilla on basal fl agellomeres) it is most similar morphologically to Paramormiini, a tribe that is likely paraphyletic. Other characters (e.g. allure-ment organs on the prothorax) are more similar to Pericomaini, or with uncertain phylogenetic affi nities (e.g. dimorphic tenacula). The parameres of the new species form a fl at bowl with a pair of mesally directed, digitate appendages basally and with distal bifurcate, back-folded processes. Key words. This nomenclatural act cannot be considered as a valid name under ICZN regulations because the subfamily name is not based on the type genus Datzia Stebner et al., 2015, and furthermore the fossil genus Protopsychoda Azar et al., 1999 was originally described under the subfamily Psychodinae. Therefore, the new family-group name Datziinae is herein proposed.

Moth flies and sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Cretaceous Burmese amber

Kraemer, Rüdiger WagnerAbstract:One new subfamily, four new genera and 10 new species of Psychodidae are described from Burmese amber which significantly increases our knowledge about this group in the Cretaceous. ProtoPsychodinae n. subfam. probably represents the oldest known ancestor of modern Psychodinae and includes three species within two genera: Datzia setosa gen. et sp. n., Datzia bispina gen. et sp. n., and Mandalayia beumersorum gen. et sp. n. Sycoracinae and Phlebotominae are represented by two genera each in the studied material, Palaeoparasycorax globosus gen. et sp. n., Palaeoparasycorax suppus gen. et sp. n., Parasycorax simplex sp. n., and Phlebotomites aphoe sp. n. and Phlebotomus vetus sp. n., respectively. Bruchomyiinae is represented by Nemopalpus quadrispiculatus sp. n. Furthermore, one genus of an incertae sedis subfamily, Bamara groehni gen. et sp. n., is described. ZooKeys, 2021Co-Authors: Jan Ježek, Peter Manko, Jozef OboňaAbstract:Records of 46 Psychodidae (Sycoracinae 1, Trichomyiinae 1, Psychodinae 44) species/subspecies are presented in this paper based on specimens collected by sweep-netting in Azerbaijan and Georgia in 2019. Nine species are recorded for the first time since their original description; 12 species are new for Transcaucasia; 22 species are new for Azerbaijan; and 17 species are new for Georgia. Saraiella ressli montana Ježek, 1990 is proposed as a synonym of S. ressli Wagner, 1983, syn. nov. Knowledge of some aspects of the ecology and biogeography of selected (especially rare) species has been expanded and a clear pattern was found in species richness, rare species, and new records in relation to land use, habitat diversity, and preservation of the environment surrounding the sampling site.

Hemimormia nyangerensis sp. nov. and Iranotelmatoscopus kenyensis sp. nov. were captured in Equatorial Africa near Victoria Lake during a fieldwork in Uganda (Gaba) and Kenya (Kusa, Nyangera). The mentioned three species are described, differential diagnoses included, and diagnostic characters illustrated.

Faunistic and bibliographical inventory of moth flies from Ukraine (Diptera, Psychodidae)
