  • business process digitization strategy and the impact of firm age and size the case of the magazine Publishing Industry
    Journal of Business Venturing, 2003
Co-Authors: Anat Barnir, John Gallaugher, Pat Auger
    Abstract:

Abstract Despite increasing interest among researchers and practitioners in the field of Internet commerce, significant controversy remains regarding the large incumbent versus nimble newcomer dynamic. This paper explores issues related to firm age and size and the firm's propensity to engage in Internet-enabled process digitization by conducting an empirical investigation based on a sample of 150 firms in the magazine Publishing Industry. Results suggest that (a) differences exist as a function of firm age and size in the degree and manner in which firms digitize business processes through the Internet, (b) Internet-enabled digitization of business processes is associated with both strategies of innovation and of low cost, and (c) the digitization–strategy relationship is stronger for new versus established firms and for smaller versus larger firms.

  • new media as catalysts for change in the transformation of the book Publishing Industry
The International Journal on Media Management, 2002
    Co-Authors: Nina D Ziv
    Abstract:

The issues currently facing the book Publishing Industry are profound and the resolution of these issues will ultimately affect how the Industry is defined in the future. One of the most important issues that the Industry faces is the emergence of a whole range of new media which have created important managerial tensions within the book Publishing firms. These tensions include defining what a book is in light of the multi-dimensional content available as well as the development of new modes of delivery; whether to remain focused on producing great content or become a more technologically oriented company; and the best organizational approach. While these tensions may be viewed as creating turmoil, they have been catalysts of change and are creating opportunities that will ultimately enable the Industry to regenerate its businesses, reach a new generation of readers, and create an environment that is more conducive to innovation.

  • changing structures of sme networks lessons from the Publishing Industry in taiwan
    Long Range Planning, 2005
Co-Authors: Carol Yehyun Lin, Jing Zhang
    Abstract:

This study uses the Publishing Industry to illustrate how Taiwan's small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs) modified their network structures to meet the requirements of the changing environment in the past 20 years. Based on interviews with 21 high-level managers in the top publishers and three network experts, six patterns of network structures were observed and the nature of network structural change was uncovered. By moving from ‘Centre-Satellite Structure’ to ‘Co-opetition Structure’ and then to ‘Spider-Web Structure’, the networks became more strategic, aggressive and flexible. The study suggests that for SMEs in a fiercely competitive Industry the best way to survive is to form a network at the strategic level, while keeping relative independence at the operational level. This study also suggests that scholars and practitioners need to understand networking behaviours from multiple perspectives of economic, social, cultural and industrial factors.

  • bend but don t break a case study on the cultural entrepreneurial process in the Publishing Industry
    Social Science Research Network, 2019
Co-Authors: Monica Calcagno, Rachele Cavara, Nunzia Coco
    Abstract:

Research on cultural industries has attracted considerable interest on cultural entrepreneurs as agents in complex interaction with multiple and evolving contexts. The study aims to capture the complexity and intensity of these relationships, exploring entrepreneurship as a journey driven by cultural and social dynamics on one side, and economic needs on the other. The investigation is an inductive inquiry carried out through an in-depth analysis of a single revelatory case in the Publishing Industry. Focusing on the relational process through which the entrepreneur and the context are co-created, the paper analyzes the entrepreneurial journey through the identification of three major stages: Divergence, Identity construction, and Institutionalization.
