TREATMENT OF HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS WITH Rauwolfia COMPOUNDS AND RESERPINE
2015Co-Authors: Irving Kass, Earl C. BrownAbstract:1described five cases in which mental depression was observed in hypertensive patients treated with reserpine (Serpasil). The purpose of this report is to describe four more hypertensive patients, two in detail, who were treated with a Rauwolfia Alkaloid or reserpine. Mental depression was observed in three of the patients, whereas in the fourth case the diagnosis was a psychotic reaction.

Genotoxic effect of Alkaloids.
Memorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 1991Co-Authors: J A Henriques, P R Moreno, G L Von Poser, C C Querol, A T HenriquesAbstract:Because of the increased use of Alkaloids in general medical practice in recent years, it is of interest to determine genotoxic, mutagenic and recombinogenic response to different groups of Alkaloids in prokaryotic and eucaryotic organisms. Reserpine, boldine and chelerythrine did not show genotoxicity response in the SOS-Chromotest whereas skimmianine showed genotoxicity in the presence of a metabolic activation mixture. Voacristine isolated from the leaves of Ervatamia coronaria shows in vivo cytostatic and mutagenic effects in Saccharomyces cerevisiae hapioids cells. The Rauwolfia Alkaloid (reserpine) was not able to induce reverse mutation and recombinational mitotic events (crossing-over and gene conversion) in yeast diploid strain XS2316.

Synthesis of Na-Demethyl-20-deethylsuaveoline, the Structure Proposed for Sellowiine
HETEROCYCLES, 2004Co-Authors: Masashi Ohba, Itaru NatsutaniAbstract:A synthesis of Na-demethyl-20-deethylsuaveoline (1), the structure assigned to the Rauwolfia Alkaloid sellowiine, has been accomplished for the first time through a route using intramolecular oxazole-olefin Diels-Alder reaction. The 1 H- and 1 3 C-NMR spectral data and the specific rotation of the synthetic 1 were in disagreement with those reported for a natural sample, leaving the chemistry of this Alkaloid incomplete.
