  • Seasonal Patterns of Fat Deposits in Relation to Migratory Strategy in Facultative Migrants

    Abstract:

    Physiological preparations for migration generally reflect migratory strategy. Migrant birds fuel long-distance flight primarily with lipids, but carrying excess fuel is costly; thus, the amount of fat deposited prior to departure often reflects the anticipated flight duration or distance between refueling bouts. Seasonal pre-migratory deposition of fat is well documented in regular seasonal migrants, but is less described for more facultative species. We analyze fat deposits of free-living birds across several taxa of facultative migrants in the songbird subfamily Carduelinae, including house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus), American goldfinches (Spinus tristis), pine siskins (Spinus pinus) and four different North American ecotypes of Red Crossbills (Loxia curvirostra), to evaluate seasonal fat deposition during facultative migratory periods. Our data suggest that the extent of seasonal fat deposits corresponds with migratory tendency in these facultative taxa. Specifically, nomadic Red Crossbills with a seasonally pRedictable annual movement demonstrated relatively large seasonal fat deposits coincident with the migratory periods. In contrast, pine siskins, thought to be more variable in timing and initiation of nomadic movements, had smaller peaks in fat deposits during the migratory season, and the partial migrant American goldfinch and the resident house finch showed no peaks coincident with migratory periods. Within the Red Crossbills, those ecotypes that are closely associated with pine habitats showed larger peaks in fat deposits coincident with autumn migratory periods and had higher wing loading, whereas those ecotypes associated with spruces, Douglas-fir and hemlocks showed larger peaks coincident with spring migratory periods and lower wing loading. We conclude that population averages of fat deposits do reflect facultative migration strategies in these species, as well as the winter thermogenic challenges at the study locations. A difference in seasonal fattening and wing loading among Red Crossbill ecotypes is consistent with the possibility that they differ in their migratory biology, and we discuss these differences in light of Crossbill reproductive schedules and phenologies of different conifer species

    While parasite infection can have substantial fitness consequences in organisms, the pRedictors of parasite prevalence and intensity are often complex and vary depending on the host species. Here, we examined correlates of Haemoproteus (a common malaria parasite) prevalence and intensity in an opportunistically breeding songbird, the Red Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra). Specifically, we quantified Haemoproteus prevalence and intensity in Crossbills caught in the Grand Teton National Park from 2010 to 2013. We found that parasite prevalence varies seasonally and across years, with the highest number of infected individuals occurring in the summer, although there was variation across summers sampled, and that prevalence was positively related to annual mean cone crop sizes (a measure of Crossbill food abundance) and daily ambient temperature (a correlate of vector abundance). Parasite intensity was significantly and positively related to one measure of innate immunity, leucocyte counts per blood volume. Finally, neither Crossbill age, ecomorph, nor sex had significant effects on parasite infection intensity; however, parasite prevalence did significantly vary among ecomorph and age classes. These results support the interpretation that a combination of physiological (specifically immune activity) and environmental factors affects parasite prevalence and infection intensity in this opportunistically breeding avian species.

    It is well documented that irruptive and nomadic migrants move in response to resources that are distributed unpRedictably in space, time or both. Increasing evidence, however, suggests that irruptive and nomadic species may use seasonal timing mechanisms to prepare for migrations, despite the more facultative nature of their movements. Here we use data from free-living and captive Red Crossbills Loxia curvirostra, a typical irruptive nomad, to examine three hypotheses regarding control of facultative migration: (1) the facultative migration hypothesis, which states that both preparation and departure decisions are regulated by resource availability; (2) the seasonal preparation hypothesis, which states that preparation is initiated by seasonal factors (i.e. endogenous rhythms and/or photoperiod) but that departure decisions are dependent on local resource availability; and (3) the seasonal migration hypothesis, which states that both preparation and departure decisions are initiated by seasonal mechanisms and are independent of local food resources. Red Crossbills in North America are thought to make temporally consistent spring migrations in anticipation of conifer cone maturation. In this study, fat deposits of free-living Red Crossbills peaked in May and June, exceeding even winter deposits. In agreement with the field data, captive birds on a natural photoperiod with constant food and temperature showed a peak in fat deposition and activity levels in June. These findings are consistent with the seasonal preparation and the seasonal migration hypotheses and contribute to a growing literature that suggests that facultative migrants may prepare for movements in similar ways to seasonal migrants.

    Abstract:

    Because available energy is finite, organisms must be selective with how and when energetic resources are allocated to demanding physiological processes such as reproduction or self-maintenance like immune function. Historically, research to understand how organisms orchestrate their annual cycles with respect to these costly and conflicting processes has focused narrowly on seasonal breeders that constrain reproduction to times of year when thermoregulatory demand is low (i.e., summer), which provide limited opportunities to reveal how physiological costs of different processes may interact with environmental conditions to influence the evolution of investment strategies. In this study, we are examining seasonal and interannual variation in environmental conditions (temperature, precipitation, food supply) and investment patterns in survival and reproduction in a reproductively flexible songbird, the Red Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra), which can reproduce opportunistically in both summer and winter in Grand Teton National Park. In addition, Crossbills provide a perfect model to investigate these environmental and physiological interactions. Preliminary results from this study have indicated that food availability may play an important role in determining how much Crossbills will invest in survival (specifically immune function) and reproduction; e.g., Crossbills will invest more in innate immunity and reproduction when food availability is high. Overall, results from this study will provide information on how species in general and Crossbills specifically respond to rapidly changing environments, which has become increasingly important in light of the effects of anthropogenic change.

    Although plasticity in signal production is well recognized as a means for animals to modify their communication systems, modifying responsiveness to signals could be equally important. We examined plasticity of responsiveness to social signals that mediate group formation and cohesion in Red Crossbills. The Red Crossbill is composed of several ecologically diverged forms, defined by variation in morphology, ecological specialization and vocal behaviour; each form is associated with a distinct variant of the species ‘contact call.’ To understand how plasticity in response to signal variants may influence social dynamics, we examined the response of Red Crossbills to distinct call variants before and after experimental pairing with a companion of a different form. In a playback study conducted soon after birds were captuRed we found that adult Crossbills responded more to calls that were similar to their own calls. However, social experience with a companion that produced a different contact call variant eroded this response selectivity; at the end of the study birds experimentally housed with a companion that produced a different call variant responded equally to all species-typical calls, but control birds continued to respond selectively to calls that were similar to their own. The observed form of response plasticity may permit birds to gain information from a wider range of conspecifics but is unlikely to facilitate the social intermixing of Crossbills of different forms; birds that respond to all Crossbill call variants probably would not gain acceptance into flocks of other forms.

    Abstract:

    Thanks to the increasing numbers of observers taking time to report to eBird, social media, and NEBIRDS, this season, as is true of recent seasons, turned up some fascinating trends. The 96 cited observers, as well as several not cited, all contributed to the firmness of the database that allows better-supported conclusions to be drawn than from our past reliance all too often on anecdotal supposition. Overwhelmingly clear this winter was the large number of taxonomically diverse species found north and west of expected winter ranges, and a surprising number of passerines reported for the first time in mid-winter. It is tempting to conclude that this phenomenon is a consequence of warmer temperatures positively affecting the food supply, although local fluctuations, especially related to water conditions, and the extremely cold late winter may have had effects not yet obvious. The species north and west of expected winter ranges are too numerous to detail here; the species accounts provide the records. Notable, though, are increasing reports of wintering Greater White-fronted Goose, Trumpeter Swan, White-winged Dove, Mourning Dove, Sandhill Crane, sparrows, and a few other passerines. Likely more transitory increases this winter were seen with Short-eaRed Owl, Pine Siskin, and White-winged Crossbill. Quite amazing were the well-documented and unprecedented mid-winter occurrences of passerines. The list is long: American Pipit in Jan, Smith’s Longspur in late Dec, Lark Sparrow in mid-Dec, LeConte’s Sparrow in Dec-Jan, multiple Orange-crowned Warblers in Dec-Jan, Yellow-throated Warbler in Jan, and Rosebreasted Grosbeak in Jan. There were numerous distributional and numerical observations of interest. The Pine Ridge hosted amazing numbers of pinewoods species, with record or nearrecord tallies of Black-capped Chickadee, Red-breasted and Pygmy Nuthatches, and Dark-eyed (White-winged) Juncos. Gull numbers at McConaughy were also amazing; examples were the 8200 Ring-billed Gulls, 770 Herring Gulls, and 19 Lesser Blackbacked Gulls, all in mid-Dec. And noteworthy were several reports from the far east of Golden Eagle, Prairie Falcon, and Dark-eyed (Pink-sided) Junco. The five Northern Goshawks was more than the usual one or two for winter. Rare species were few, except for one long overdue: the first modern documented record of Common Raven. Also a first for the state was the documenting of Red Crossbill Type 10, in three locations across the state, no less. Curious, and welldocumented, was an extremely small white-winged gull at McConaughy ultimately deemed to be a Glaucous Gull. And for subspecies aficionados, a growing observer group in Nebraska, reports of Red-tailed Hawk subspecies or forms are shedding some light on their Nebraska distributions, interactions on the Pine Ridge between eastern and Rocky Mountain subspecies of White-breasted Nuthatch raised some questions, and fodder was provided for sorting out subspecies of Hermit Thrush occurring in western Nebrask

    Abstract:

    There were many significant reports, including high and low numbers, early and late dates, out-of-range sightings including nesting, and, of course, rarities. High numbers were led by geese; an amazing 1.7 million Snows were estimated by acreage (!) and counts of 10,000 Greater White-fronted and 100,000 Canada Geese were near-record high counts for spring. A bit surprising as record spring counts were 3000 European Starlings and 3000 American White Pelicans. Nightjar surveys by Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and others yielded an amazing 40+ Chuck-will’s-widows in the southeast; Ruddy Turnstones put on a show with 85 in Platte Co; 127 Pied-billed Grebes were at Holmes Lake, Lancaster Co; Dundy Co yielded 22 Yellow-breasted Chats and 136 Orchard Orioles; a record spring total of 29 Louisiana Waterthrushes were reported; and there were no fewer than eight Snowy Plovers found in the Rainwater Basin. On the other hand, Gray Partridge and Northern Saw-whet Owl are both apparently at cyclical lows. Pinyon Jay continues to be invisibly enigmatic, and Bluewinged Warbler also seems to be disappearing from the state, as might be Black-billed Cuckoo. Encouragingly, however, Black-billed Magpie persists in Madison Co. The lack of Prothonotary Warbler reports is perhaps easily explained by devastating flooding of its Missouri River habitat. As might be expected in certain years, winter visitors in cyclical low numbers included Townsend’s Solitaire, Common Redpoll, Red Crossbill, and Snow Bunting. There were several startlingly early arrival dates, a continuing trend in recent years. These included the state’s first two March records of Sora, Ruddy Turnstone record early by 17 days, White-faced Ibis by 10 days, Olive-sided Flycatcher by 7 days, and Baltimore Orioles (banded, no less) by around two weeks. While state-level rarities are fun, probably more significant biologically are out-of-range sightings within the state. Eastern species west were the 6th Panhandle Green Heron, Sedge Wren in Lincoln Co, an eastern subspecies (Icteria virens virens) Yellow-breasted Chat in Garden Co, and the 9th Panhandle Nashville Warbler. Western species east were exemplified by two extraordinary records, both welldocumented: Red-naped Sapsucker in Sarpy Co and Cassin’s Vireo in Platte Co. Less spectacular were numerous Cinnamon Teal and Black-necked Stilts eastward, and a 2nd county record of Sharp-tailed Grouse in Dixon Co. Southern birds northward were the 2nd northerly record of Red-shouldeRed Hawk, 4th Pileated Woodpecker north of Washington Co, and a Lesser Goldfinch in Dawes Co. Interesting nesting records were two American Avocet nests in Fillmore Co, unfortunately soon-after inundated, and the apparent establishment of American Woodcock as a breeding bird at Calamus Reservoir, Loup Co. Last but not least is a group of state-level rarities, including the 4th American Three-toed Woodpecker, 7th Black-chinned Hummingbird, 19th Painted Bunting, 6th spring Hammond’s Flycatcher (heard only), 6th and 7th spring Broad-tailed Hummingbirds, and 9th spring Surf Scoter. Two Varied Thrushes were found, and the elusive Baird’s Sparrow was recorded in Sioux Co.     Abstract:

    As has been the trend in recent winters, and despite the relative coolness of this winter, there were numerous examples of species north of expected midwinter ranges or present in higher numbers than usual in winter. The long list includes unexpected midwinter records of Tundra Swan, American Wigeon, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, White-winged Dove, Sandhill Crane, Clark’s Grebe, Doublecrested Cormorant, Red-shouldeRed Hawk, and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Startling was the state’s first winter record of Sedge Wren, perhaps the biggest rarity of the season. And Eastern Meadowlark was documented in midwinter for the first time, although its presence in the southeast has been suspected. Record winter counts were made of Mallard (124,000), Common Merganser (20,000-31,000), Eurasian CollaRed- Dove (1500), and American Goldfinch (342). Trends of concern are the continuing decline of Black-billed Magpie and new indications of problems with Black-capped Chickadee and even possibly Tufted Titmouse. On the positive side, Greater Prairie-Chicken is doing well in the northeast and BarRed Owl is sprinting westward in the Republican River Valley. Very low numbers of Common Redpoll and Red Crossbill are probably cyclically-related, as might be the virtual absence of Gray Partridge and Pinyon Jay the last couple of years.     Abstract:

    By far the most striking feature of this fall’s report is the large number of lingering migrants, a trend that is continuing and apparently increasing, especially among passerines. Editor Jan Paseka counted 17 uses of the word “tardy” and 43 of “late” or “latest”. It is tempting to relate this to the warmer environment and resulting increased availability of food items at higher latitudes and later dates than in previous years. A sad note: a startling occurrence in Gering, Scotts Bluff 20 Aug was described by Marie Smith: “We had a huge hailstorm around 10:30. The hail was probably pea to quarter sized, but it was driven by what felt like tornadic winds. We went [downtown] this morning and collected 258 pounds of dead birds. I am estimating that 50% were American Robins, 35% were English Sparrows, 14% were House Finches, and 1% were Pine Siskins.” After some calculations using weights found online, the 258 lbs translates into at least 2000 and as many as 3300 birds. Perhaps of most interest are breeding records that are new to the state. First state breeding records were made by Black-bellied Whistling-Duck and Ring-necked Duck, contrastingly one ranging south and the other following recent trends of northward range expansions. Common Gallinules bRed quite far to the north, and the first breeding record for Cattle Egret in the RWB, eighth overall for the state, was accompanied by important breeding records there of EaRed Grebe and White-faced Ibis. Mississippi Kites bRed in Lancaster for the first time, and dependent fledglings in late Oct were observed for Red Crossbill and Northern Cardinal. High numbers are often intriguing. The biggest surprise was the incRedible number of reports of Canada Warbler; the 33 reports involved about 35 individuals. Carolina Wrens also spread out in numbers, with some 21 extralimital reports around the state. Lincoln hosted high counts of 1415 Chimney Swifts and 10,000 Purple Martins, both at roosts. A count of 200 Eastern Kingbirds was impressive. The 87 Red-breasted Nuthatches in Sowbelly Canyon suggested an invasion year, but the best count in the east was only four. Good numbers were reported of Red Crossbills, but only five Purple Finches and five Snow Buntings had appeaRed by the end of the period. Five Northern Saw-whet Owls were detected in Sowbelly Canyon. Major rarities were few for a fall season, but of good quality. They included Nebraska’s first documented record of Mexican Duck, 6th Harris’s Hawk, 11th Longtailed Jaeger, and 15th Brant. Of miscellaneous interest were the 6th and 7th records of the Buteo jamaicensis abieticola subspecies of Red-tailed Hawk, recorded Type 4 Red Crossbills, second record of the Rocky Mountain form of Downy Woodpecker, 2nd latest ever Great Egret, 3rd latest ever Lewis’s Woodpecker, Bohemian Waxwing and White-winged Crossbill in the northeast, and 3rd ever Red-naped Sapsucker east of the Panhandle.     Abstract:

    As far as birds go, this was a relatively quiet season, but, as usual, there was much of interest to chew on. Most important in any report are range changes, major changes in expected numbers or early and late dates, all of which relate directly to the status, positive or negative, of a given species. Waterfowl in general were only average in numbers; new high counts are rare these days compaRed with numbers 20 or so years ago. Two winter finches, Common Redpoll and Red Crossbill, that normally arrive in late fall, were virtually unreported. Notable range expansions are under way for three forest species: Red-shouldeRed Hawk, BarRed Owl, and Pileated Woodpecker. Concern is being expressed for Tufted Titmouse, as well as Black-billed Magpie. Rarities are of interest to most of us. Topping the list this fall was Nebraska’s second Anna’s Hummingbird, a stunning male. A Gray Flycatcher was the 6th state record. Black-chinned Hummingbirds continue to be conspicuous in the west with 6th and 7th state records. Less dramatic were a Steller’s Jay and a Varied Thrush. State level rarities include a pair of elliptical migrants that are almost non-existent in fall: the first documented fall record of White-rumped Sandpiper and 7th for Hudsonian Godwit. Unexpectedly late were American Redstart (record late by 16 days) and Yellow-throated Warbler, the latter far west in North Platte in Nov! Also out of place by quite a bit was a Red-naped Sapsucker seen by many NOU members in Brown. A group of wood-warblers appeaRed in robust numbers, notably the 45 Canada Warblers and 70 Magnolia Warblers, but also 30 Blackburnian Warblers and 42 Black-throated Green Warblers. Record high fall counts were set by Chimney Swift, Caspian Tern, Green Heron, Mississippi Kite, Broad-winged Hawk (12,000!), Least Flycatcher, Gray Catbird, Brown Thrasher, Black-throated Green Warbler (6!), and Indigo Bunting. There were numerous second- and third-highest fall counts as well. Late dates included a dependent fledgling Northern Cardinal in Dixon County 31 Oct and record late fall dates for Willow Flycatcher and Louisiana Waterthrush.     Meeting metabolic demands through foraging is a basic animal need that drives the evolution of foraging adaptations. The use of social information is one adaptation that could improve foraging success and fitness if it helps animals locate food when conditions are challenging. It is unknown if food limitation—or the glucocorticoid hormones that are often released when food is limited—can influence the extent to which animals use social information or their ability to learn novel foraging techniques. We exploRed the effects of limited access to food on activity levels, corticosterone secretion, and social information use in Red Crossbills, a highly social songbird species adapted to cope with high degrees of resource unpRedictability. Using an observer/demonstrator paradigm, food limited or well fed observers were allowed to watch demonstrators solve a novel feeding puzzle before being allowed to attempt the puzzle themselves across repeated trials. Our findings suggest that food limitation transiently increased activity levels but did not result in long-term elevations of corticosterone and did not increase the speed at which Red Crossbills utilized social information to solve the novel foraging task. However, food limitation may have increased the value of using socially acquiRed information, as foraging technique performance improved faster in food limited birds relative to controls. Social learning was further demonstrated by the Red Crossbills in this study when naïve observers overwhelmingly learned a socially-demonstrated task over an undemonstrated task when tested on a two-task foraging board.

    Physiological preparations for migration generally reflect migratory strategy. Migrant birds fuel long-distance flight primarily with lipids, but carrying excess fuel is costly; thus, the amount of fat deposited prior to departure often reflects the anticipated flight duration or distance between refueling bouts. Seasonal pre-migratory deposition of fat is well documented in regular seasonal migrants, but is less described for more facultative species. We analyze fat deposits of free-living birds across several taxa of facultative migrants in the songbird subfamily Carduelinae, including house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus), American goldfinches (Spinus tristis), pine siskins (Spinus pinus) and four different North American ecotypes of Red Crossbills (Loxia curvirostra), to evaluate seasonal fat deposition during facultative migratory periods. Our data suggest that the extent of seasonal fat deposits corresponds with migratory tendency in these facultative taxa. Specifically, nomadic Red Crossbills with a seasonally pRedictable annual movement demonstrated relatively large seasonal fat deposits coincident with the migratory periods. In contrast, pine siskins, thought to be more variable in timing and initiation of nomadic movements, had smaller peaks in fat deposits during the migratory season, and the partial migrant American goldfinch and the resident house finch showed no peaks coincident with migratory periods. Within the Red Crossbills, those ecotypes that are closely associated with pine habitats showed larger peaks in fat deposits coincident with autumn migratory periods and had higher wing loading, whereas those ecotypes associated with spruces, Douglas-fir and hemlocks showed larger peaks coincident with spring migratory periods and lower wing loading. We conclude that population averages of fat deposits do reflect facultative migration strategies in these species, as well as the winter thermogenic challenges at the study locations. A difference in seasonal fattening and wing loading among Red Crossbill ecotypes is consistent with the possibility that they differ in their migratory biology, and we discuss these differences in light of Crossbill reproductive schedules and phenologies of different conifer species

    While parasite infection can have substantial fitness consequences in organisms, the pRedictors of parasite prevalence and intensity are often complex and vary depending on the host species. Here, we examined correlates of Haemoproteus (a common malaria parasite) prevalence and intensity in an opportunistically breeding songbird, the Red Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra). Specifically, we quantified Haemoproteus prevalence and intensity in Crossbills caught in the Grand Teton National Park from 2010 to 2013. We found that parasite prevalence varies seasonally and across years, with the highest number of infected individuals occurring in the summer, although there was variation across summers sampled, and that prevalence was positively related to annual mean cone crop sizes (a measure of Crossbill food abundance) and daily ambient temperature (a correlate of vector abundance). Parasite intensity was significantly and positively related to one measure of innate immunity, leucocyte counts per blood volume. Finally, neither Crossbill age, ecomorph, nor sex had significant effects on parasite infection intensity; however, parasite prevalence did significantly vary among ecomorph and age classes. These results support the interpretation that a combination of physiological (specifically immune activity) and environmental factors affects parasite prevalence and infection intensity in this opportunistically breeding avian species.

Here we use data from free-living and captive Red Crossbills Loxia curvirostra, a typical irruptive nomad, to examine three hypotheses regarding control of facultative migration: (1) the facultative migration hypothesis, which states that both preparation and departure decisions are regulated by resource availability; (2) the seasonal preparation hypothesis, which states that preparation is initiated by seasonal factors (i.e. endogenous rhythms and/or photoperiod) but that departure decisions are dependent on local resource availability; and (3) the seasonal migration hypothesis, which states that both preparation and departure decisions are initiated by seasonal mechanisms and are independent of local food resources. Red Crossbills in North America are thought to make temporally consistent spring migrations in anticipation of conifer cone maturation. In this study, fat deposits of free-living Red Crossbills peaked in May and June, exceeding even winter deposits. In agreement with the field data, captive birds on a natural photoperiod with constant food and temperature showed a peak in fat deposition and activity levels in June. These findings are consistent with the seasonal preparation and the seasonal migration hypotheses and contribute to a growing literature that suggests that facultative migrants may prepare for movements in similar ways to seasonal migrants.
