Now in his second year at the helm of the Utah golf program, head coach Garrett Clegg knows his team has the capability to have a great spring. "This team is very capable of having great tournaments every week because we have a lot of fire power," Clegg said. "If we are looking at the big picture, I expect this to be one of the best years we have had in a long time. It already has been. The fall was that way and I would expect the spring to be because these guys are really, really good." In the fall, Utah notched its first team title since 2009 after finishing in first place at the Mark Simpson Invitational following a playoff with Colorado to win the tie-breaker in Erie, Colo. Junior Kyler Dunkle helped lead the Utes to the team title after Dunkle would also win the individual title, marking the first individual title won by a Ute since 2006, and the first time since October of 1990 that Utah had won both the individual and team titles in the same tournament. "We had a great tournament in Colorado and were able to win the tournament," Clegg stated. "Kyler played very well in the event and really well all fall. Our results as a team were very consistent in the fall, but I would say that our play was up and down. Our last tournament kind of left a sour taste in our mouths even though we had a fourthplace finish, we didn't play very well. The offseason is a great time to work on your golf game to make swing adjustments and get reenergized." Dunkle led the Utes throughout the fall season notching three top-20 finishes. Dunkle also led the Utes in scoring average at 71.1 strokes per round, while also recording a team-low round of 64, which he notched during the third round of the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational. "As far as golf goes, we lean pretty heavily on Kyler. He has been our best player and he was our best player last year as far as scoring average. In golf, you need your top ones to perform well consistently and he has done that for us," Clegg said. 4 Along with Dunkle, sophmores Jordan Costello and Mitchell Schow both bring their experience from competing last year to improve this year's squad. Both Costello and Schow appeared in every tournament during the fall. Costello's top finish of the fall came at the Health Plan Mountaineer placing 15th, while Schow notched a 12th place finish at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational. "Jordan was very consistent. We will need someone to be that way in the spring as well. We need guys who are stable and that is what Jordan did for us. Mitchell was a little up and down, but we are going to need our older guys, Jordan, Kyler, and Mitchell, to carry the load and then the freshman can come in and help where they can," Clegg explained. Rounding out the fall lineup, freshmen Blake Tomlinson and Tristan Mandur came in and made an immediate impact to the team. Tomlinson posted his best finish in the opening event, the Gene Miranda Falcon in Erie, Colo., when he finished in a tie for 10th place. Mandur also recorded a top-10 finish, placing sixth overall at the Nick Watney Invitational in Fresno, Calif. "These two freshmen have been great," Clegg said. "They each have top-10 finishes and have each had really key rounds, key moments, and have had great scores. Tristan and Blake are just fantastic players. There is a lot that happens in this semester. Usually, players get more run down than in the fall. It wouldn't shock me if they played great all spring and it wouldn't shock me if they were up and down. I am excited for who they are and what they bring to the table, but I don't have any expectations for them." Utah will open spring competition at the John A. Burns Collegiate in Lihue, Hawaii. The three-day tournament will run Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 15-17, at the Wailua Golf Course. "We have great spring tournaments," Clegg stated. "Our fall schedule was a bit softer than usual, but in the spring, we have a lot of great tournaments. We will compete against some of the very best programs in the country and we will know a lot more about ourselves." WWW.U TA H U T E S . C O M 2 017- 18 U TAH U T E S G O LF ME DIA GUIDE GENE MIRANDA FALCON INVITATIONAL | SEPT. 8-10, 2017 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Utah men's golf team closed out its season-opening tournament on Sunday, taking fifth place at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, which was held at the par-72, 7,511yard Eisenhower Golf Course. Utah finished the three-day event posting a combined score of 12-under par (292-279-281=852) - just one stroke behind No. 12-ranked UNLV, who finished the tournament with a score of 13-under par (851). Wyoming won the event registering a score of 29-under par and Colorado State followed with a score of 24-under par. "Despite our opening round, we played some really good golf this week," said Utah head coach Garrett Clegg. "A key moment for us this week was playing the final three holes. Last season we struggled to close out tournaments and would frequently lose ground over those final three holes. Today, we made seven birdies to only two bogeys on those holes. I am really proud out how we finished the tournament and look forward to what I think will be a great season for us." Junior Kyler Dunkle (-6) and freshman Blake Tomlinson (-5) registered top-10 performances in the first event of the season for the Utes. Dunkle finished in a tie for seventh place, while Tomlinson tied for 10th place overall. Jordan Costello posted a three-day score of 1 -under par and finished in a tie for 24th place, while Mitchell Schow came back to finish in a tie for 46th overall with a score of 3-over par. Tristan Mandur rounded out Utah's scoring with a combined total of 6-over par to finish in a tie for 63rd place. Utah finished the event second overall in a field of 19 teams, registering a score of 3.97 on the par-4 holes this week. The Utes tallied a score of 3.22 on par-3's and 4.80 on the par-5's. Utah will take a couple of weeks off before returning to action Sept. 25-26 at the Mark Simpson Invitational. The event will be held at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo. Junior Kyler Dunkle earned the program's first regular-season individual title since 2006, while guiding the Utes to the program's first team title since 2009. Utah won in a playoff with tournament host Colorado, after the two teams finished the 54-hole event tied at 22-under par (842). The Utes, who went into the final round in third place behind Colorado and Wyoming, carded a combined 11-under par (277) in Tuesday's third round - the lowest round of the day and the second-lowest round of the tournament (Colorado, 275). Utah earned its first tournament team title since winning the Purple & Red Invitational that was held at Valley View Golf Club in Layton, Utah, back on Sept. 28-29, 2009. Meanwhile, Dunkle would go onto card a final-round 8-under par (64) to finish at 14-under par (70-68-64=202) and take home individual honors. He becomes the first Ute to win an event since Dustin Pimm won the Wolfpack Classic in Reno, Nev., back on Oct. 3, 2006. This also marks the first time Utah won both individual and team titles in the same event since taking home the Skywest Collegiate championship back on Oct. 30-31, 1990. Utah's Phil Holmes won the individual title for the Utes. "This is an exciting win for us," said Utah head coach Garrett Clegg. "There were a total of 19 different team competing in this tournament. Colorado is a great team and were without question the team to beat. Wyoming, who might not be thought of as a traditional golf power, has a strong team this year. They won the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational just two weeks ago. Our team played exceptional golf for three straight rounds to come out on top." Utah won in a tie-breaker with Colorado as both teams played hole No. 18, counting four of the five scores, 201 7 - 1 8 U TAH U TE S GOLF one time. Dunkle and sophomore Mitchell Schow birdied, while sophomore Jordan Costello, freshman Blake Tomlinson and freshman Tristan Mandur recorded pars. Colorado had two players record pars and another player bogeyed. Colorado's final two players conceded their holes. Wyoming would finish third in the tournament, shooting a combined 18-under par (846). UC-Riverside (-6) and Oregon State (-4) rounded out the top five team finishes in the event. Schow would finish in a tie for 12th place posting a three-round score of 5-under par (71-69-71=211) and Mandur tallied a top-20 finish, tying for 20th overall with a s

    Abstract:

The Red-Tailed Hawk and Great Horned Owl are two species of raptor that are similar in body size, diet, and habitat. Both species use their hindlimbs during hunting, but differ in foot morphology, how they approach and immobilize prey, and the average size of prey captured. They also differ in primary flight style: the Red-Tailed Hawk uses static soaring and the Great Horned Owl uses flap-gliding. The objectives of this study were to characterize the microstructure and cross-sectional shape of limb bones of these species and examine the relationship with flight and hunting behaviors. The mid-shaft of six limb bones from six individuals of each species was sampled. The degree of bone laminarity (proportion of circular primary vascular canals) and cross-sectional geometric parameters were calculated. In both species, the humerus and femur exhibited features that suggest high resistance to torsional loading, whereas the tibiotarsus and phalanges had a shape more likely to resist compression and bending in a specific plane. The femur of the Red-Tailed Hawk exhibited higher laminarity and larger polar moment of area than that of the Great Horned Owl. The tibiotarsus was more elliptical than that of the Great Horned Owl. The Hawk approaches prey from a more horizontal axis, takes prey of greater mass, and is more likely to pursue prey on the ground, which could potentially be causing more torsional loads on the femur and bending loads on the tibiotarsus. In addition, differences in polar moment of area of the phalanges between the species could relate to differences in foot morphology or digit length. The humerus and ulna of the flap-gliding Great Horned Owl are mor

• secondary anticoagulant rodenticide exposure in migrating juvenile red tailed Hawks buteo jamaicensis in relationship to body condition
    Journal of Raptor Research, 2018
Co-Authors: Emily V Abernathy, Joshua M Hull, Allen M Fish, Christopher W Briggs
    Abstract:

Secondary exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) through consumption of contaminated prey has been documented worldwide in many non-target species, especially raptors. The Red-Tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis), a raptor that frequents agricultural areas and eats primarily rodents, is particularly susceptible. Because there is documentation of Red-Tailed Hawk exposure to ARs in California, this study aims to describe the extent to which migrating juvenile Red-Tailed Hawks are exposed to ARs, as well as any sublethal effects of AR ingestion. We collected blood samples and body morphometrics from 97 juvenile Red-Tailed Hawks migrating through the Marin Headlands, Marin County, CA, from August to December in 2013 and 2015, and screened samples for the presence of ARs. Eight Hawks (8.2%) tested positive for some amount of ARs. We detected first-generation (diphacinone, chlorophacinone) and second-generation (brodifacoum, bromadiolone) ARs. Although some juvenile Red-Tailed Hawks are exposed to ARs either along their migration route or as resident birds in the Marin Headlands, we did not find any relationship between body condition and presence of ARs. Although this method of AR sampling of live birds is novel and increases our sampling capabilities, the short half-lives of ARs in blood make it difficult to estimate population-wide exposure rates. Future studies should focus on resident raptors near agricultural areas where AR exposure can be tested over time to better understand how this technique can be used to estimate exposure rates across whole populations.

  • contrasting molecular and morphological evidence for the identification of an anomalous buteo a cautionary tale for hybrid diagnosis

    Abstract:

An adult Buteo was found dead as a road-kill south of Sacramento, California, and was thought to represent the first state record of the eastern Red-shouldered Hawk (B. lineatus lineatus;). It is now a specimen in the Museum of Wildlife and Fisheries Biology (WFB 4816) at the University of California, Davis. We examined this specimen and found that many of its plumage characters differed from all other adult Red-shouldered Hawks examined, including nominate adults. Plumage markings and measurements were intermediate between Red-Tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis, ssp calurus) and Red-shouldered Hawk (ssp elegans), leading us to hypothesize that the bird was a hybrid. However, mtDNA sequences and nuDNA microsatellites proved definitively that the bird was a Red-shouldered Hawk, most likely of eastern origin. This case illustrates that apparent hybrids or apparent vagrants could be individuals with anomalous phenotypes caused by rare genetic variation or novel epigenetic effects.

    Abstract:

Previous phylogenetic hypotheses suggest a sister group relationship between mainland and widespread Buteo swainsoni (Swainson’s Hawk) and the island archipelago taxon Buteo galapagoensis (Galapagos Hawk). We further describe phylogenetic relationships of this clade using molecular data from the mitochondrial control region, and consider the role of niche expansion on phenotype using morphological data from B. galapagoensis, B. swainsoni, and related Buteo jamaicensis (Red-Tailed Hawk). Among 52 unique Buteo haplotypes, phylogenetic analyses support a monophyletic B. galapagoensis clade within a clade of B. swainsoni haplotypes, rendering B. swainsoni paraphyletic with respect to B. galapagoensis. Mitochondrial paraphyly is likely a result of incomplete lineage sorting subsequent to a recent colonization event and exemplifies speciation of peripheral population isolates. Morphological comparisons indicate that metrics associated with prey capture differ significantly between B. galapagoensis and B. swainsoni, but are similar between B. galapagoensis and B. jamaicensis. These results suggest directional selection on B. galapagoensis morphology associated with feeding, possibly an outcome of decreased interspecific competition and change towards a more generalist diet shared by B. jamaicensis. In the B. galapagoensis lineage, our results suggest that genetic drift influences the neutral mitochondrial marker, whereas selection may have driven phenotypic character change. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 95, 779‐789.

  • hybridization among buteos swainson s Hawks buteo swainsoni x red tailed Hawks buteo jamaicensis

    Abstract:

Abstract We report three cases of hybridization between wild Swainson's Hawks (Buteo swainsoni) and Red-Tailed Hawks (B. jamaicensis) identified by using nuclear and mitochondrial DNA markers. The hybrid individuals were field-identified as Swainson's Hawks and sampled from Alberta, Canada (n = 2) and Utah, USA (n = 1). Nineteen nuclear microsatellite loci were used in a factorial correspondence analysis to create genotypic clusters of 468 Red-Tailed and 357 Swainson's Hawks. Three suspected hybrids were identified by an intermediate genetic position between the genotypic clusters of the two species, indicating a hybridogenetic composition. We examined mitochondrial control region sequence data to identify the maternal background of the putative hybrids; two of the hybrid specimens had Red-Tailed Hawk mtDNA haplotypes and the third a Swainson's Hawk haplotype. These results suggest that hybridization between these two species may occur in their shared breeding range and can result in reciprocal hybrid off...

    Abstract:

Here, we report confirmation of sarcocysts of Sarcocystis jamaicensis in an experimental intermediate host, IFN-γ gene knockout (KO) mice orally inoculated sporocysts from its natural definitive host, a Red-Tailed Hawk ( Buteo jamaicensis) (RTH). A RTH submitted to the Carolina Raptor Center, Huntersville, North Carolina, was euthanized because it could not be rehabilitated and released. Fully sporulated sporocysts from intestinal scrapings of the RTH were orally fed to 2 laboratory-reared outbred Swiss Webster mice (SW; Mus musculus) and to 2 KO mice. The sporocysts were infective for KO mice but not to SW mice. Both SW mice remained asymptomatic, and neither schizonts nor sarcocysts were found in their tissues when euthanized on day 54 post-inoculation (PI). The KO mice developed neurological signs and were necropsied 38-54 days PI. Schizonts/merozoites were found in both KO mice euthanized and they were confined to the brain. The predominant lesion was meningoencephalitis. Microscopic sarcocysts were found in muscles of both KO mice. When viewed with light microscopy, the sarcocyst wall appeared thin (<1 μm thick) and smooth. Ultrastructural details of sarcocysts are described.
