    Abstract:

    In daylight science the availability of sunlight and skylight at different times has been studied because of the desire to use daylight in both exterior and interior spaces. Exterior skylight ilLuminances under overcast skies were adopted as a standard for window design in the past. Current ISO/CIE sky types are standardised as Relative Luminance patterns normalised to the zenith. In this paper, the zenith Luminance in candela/square metre and the resulting diffuse ilLuminance in lux are determined for all sky types. Furthermore, the proportions of sunlight and skylight under different levels of turbidity are found and documented. Efforts to harmonise electric lighting and daylighting standards need to analyse the data on available daylight in physical units in order to ensure energy savings that respect human requirements as well as providing information suitable for computer-aided design.

    Abstract:

    Humans excel at inferring information about 3D scenes from their 2D images projected on the retinas, using a wide range of depth cues. One example of such inference is the tendency for observers to perceive lighter image regions as closer. This psychophysical behavior could have an ecological basis because nearer regions tend to be lighter in natural 3D scenes. Here, we show that an analogous association exists between the Relative Luminance and binocular disparity preferences of neurons in macaque primary visual cortex. The joint coding of Relative Luminance and binocular disparity at the neuronal population level may be an integral part of the neural mechanisms for perceptual inference of depth from images.

    Abstract:

    The Ishihara test is the most widely used screening test for red-green colour deficiency. Results obtained by 401 people with red-green colour deficiency show that the combined sensitivity of the Transformation and Vanishing plates of the 38 plate Edition of the Ishihara plates is 95.5% on eight errors, 97.5% on six errors and 99.0% on three errors. The Hidden digit designs only identified approximately 50% of colour-deficient subjects. The protan/deutan classification plates were found to be more effective for deutans than for protans. No classification was obtained for 18% of protanopes and 3% of deuteranopes who saw neither figure on classification plates; 40% of protanomalous trichromats and 37.5% of deuteranomalous trichromats saw both classification figures and were classified on the Relative Luminance (clarity) of these figures. The specificity of the Ishihara test was determined in a previous study (Birch and McKeever, 1993) and the results combined with the present data to obtain the overall efficiency of the Ishihara plates for a representative cross section of colour-deficient subjects.

  • Electrochromic performance of sol–gel deposited NiO thin film

    Abstract:

    Abstract The nickel oxide (NiO) films were prepared from nickel acetate precursor by sol–gel dip coating technique. The films were characterized for their structural, compositional, morphological, optical, electrochromical and colorimetric measurement using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, optical transmittance studies and CIE system of colorimetric analysis. XPS measurements revealed that the films exhibited presence of NiO phase. SEM images showed a smooth and porous nature of NiO thin film. The EC device made up of glass/ITO/NiO/KOH/ITO/glass showed optical modulation of 51% and Relative Luminance difference of 49.45%, respectively. In addition to the aforementioned parameters, the coloration efficiency was found to be 49 cm 2 /C at 550 nm.

  • Efficient electrochromic performance of nanoparticulate WO3 thin films

    Abstract:

    This report highlights the suitability of electrodeposited nanoparticulate-WO3 (NP-WO3) electrodes for transmissive electrochromic devices (ECDs). The WO3 electrodes in the form of thin films are composed of 10–20 nm nanoparticles. An electrochromic (EC) device of dimensions 5 × 4 cm2 fabricated using NP-WO3 showed an Li insertion coefficient (x) of 0.43, which resulted in highest photopic transmittance modulation (88.51%), better Li-ion diffusion coefficient (∼3.16 × 10−9 cm2 s−1), fast electrochromic response time (5.2 s for coloration and 3.7 for bleaching) and excellent coloration efficiency (∼137 cm2 C−1). On reduction of WO3, the CIELAB 1931 2° color space coordinates show the transition from colorless to the deep blue state (Y = 97, a* = −1.93, b* = 0.46 and Y = 10, a* = 1.57, b* = −41.01) with steady decrease in Relative Luminance.
