    Abstract:

    Background: Removable Orthodontic Appliances are made in a laboratory by a dental technician. The main material is acrylic and cold cured acrylic is commonly used. Acrylic work without adequate protection could result in negative impacts on the health of dental technicians. Purpose: To describe several hazards that can be affected dental technician when fabricating Removable Orthodontic Appliances. Reviews: In the process of Orthodontic acrylic plate fabrication, dental technicians will be exposed to dust and acrylic monomers. Finishing and polishing of acrylic also used materials either pumice or whiting that containing silica. Some risk reported are pneumoconiosis, irritation, allergies, and silicosis. Cross infection were also easily occured. Adequate equipment and action were required to minimize the risk so it will not endanger the health of dental technicians. Conclusion: In Orthodontic Removable Appliances fabrication, dental technicians are facing the risk to possible irritation, allergies, respiratory problems and cross-infection that is harmful to their health. Dental laboratories need to be equipped with a dust extractor, a good ventilation system and technicians should wear work protecting device and perform adequate disinfection.

    Abstract:

    Background: Finishing and polishing of Removable Orthodontic Appliance will produce acrylic dust that can be harmful to health, one of which resulted in pneumoconiosis. The duration and concentration of exposure is an important factor associated with the risk associated with toxicology. Objective: To find out the amount of acrylic dust and duration of finishing and polishing generated in the manufacture of a Removable Orthodontic Appliance by the fourth and sixth semester student of TKG Study Program the Faculty of Vocational TKG UNAIR. Methods: This observational study conducted with samples were Removable Orthodontic Appliances made with the layering technique. After setting, the plate was removed from the working model and was weighed. The time required to complete finishing and polishing were recorded and also after the Orthodontic plate smooth and shiny. Data were analyzed descriptively. Differences in the amount of acrylic dust and duration of finishing and polishing by the fourth and sixth semester students analyzed by t test (α= 0.05). The relationship between the amount of acrylic dust and the duration of finishing and polishing was analyzed using Pearson test with p value α 0:05 rated significantly. Results: The t-test showed that the finishing and total dust acrylic produced by the students of fourth semester was significantly greater than the sixth semester (p 0.05). Duration of finishing and polishing by student of fourth semester significantly different from the sixth semester. (P = 0.05 to r = 0.14); as well as students of sixth semester. (P = 0.11> 0.05, p = 0:29). Conclusion: It is concluded that the amount of acrylic dust in the manufacture of Orthodontic plate by the fourth and sixth semester are 1.56 and 1.32 grams, respectivelly Finishing and polishing duration were 220.5 and 55.58 minutes, respectivelly. With the danger of exposure to dust acrylic, it is advisable to always anticipate the dust by wearing personal protective equipment, training to increase skills, providing a vacuum cleaner and adequate ventilation

    Abstract:

    Background: Dental Laboratory of the RSGM FKG UNAIR receives Orthodontic work from FKG UNAIR students. Removable Orthodontic Appliance consist of three components, that are base plate, retentive component and active component. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to know variety of works which was most accepted at RSGM FKG UNAIR Dental Laboratory. Methods: This observational study was done by looking the administration data of the RSGM FKG UNAIR Dental Laboratory from odd semester of 2012 until odd semester of 2014 period, then were grouped by semester and type of work. Data were analyzed descriptively. Result: The results showed that from the period of odd semester of 2012 to odd semester of 2014 a total of 864 working models was received consisting of making 768 new Appliances and repairing 96 Appliances. The highest job was received in odd semester of 2013 (making 220 new Appliances and repairing 20 Appliances). Making Adams clasp was the most work that must be done (1794 pieces) and then followed by making U loop labial bow (660 pieces), double cantilever spring (477 pieces), single cantilever spring (283 pieces). From 96 works of reparation, 47 % need reparation of wire works. Reparation of clasp or spring was the highest one. Soldering was always found in every semester. Conclusion: In all semester the most Orthodontic work received by RSGM FKG UNAIR Dental Laboratory were making Adams clasp, U loops labial bow, double cantilever spring, and single cantilever spring respectively.

    Abstract:

    Background: Class II malocclusion or also called distoclusion, is marked by the mesiobuccal cusp of the maxilarry first permanent molar occlude of the embrasure from mesiobuccal cusp of the mandibular first permanent molar and edges of the mandibular second premolar buccal cusp. This malocclusion arises due to genetic factors or bad habits such as thumb sucking habit. Purpose: To describe several kinds of Removable Orthodontic Appliances that can be used for the treatment of Class II malocclusions. Literature review: Removable Orthodontic Appliance has the simpler ability to treat malocclusion than fixed Appliance. This Appliance can be chosen for treating dental disorders if the abnormalities of teeth are not too complex with the the dental arch still in normal circumstances. Functional Appliances can be used to correct malocclusion by utilizing the forces generated by the muscles. On Class II malocclusion, these Appliance can promote the growth of mandible forward. This Appliance affects both orofacial muscles and dentoalveolar development. Activator, twin block, bionator, and Frankel Appliance are functional Appliances . In Class II malocclusion, muscle activity depends on the design of the Appliance, but primarily used to put the mandible downward and forward. Conclusion: Functional Appliances such as activators, bionator, twin blocks and Frankel Appliance can be used to correct Class II malocclusion.     Abstract:

    Background: Anterior cross bite is defined as the condition where the maxillary anterior teeth located more to the palate than the mandibular teeth. This malocclusion mainly occur in children with persistency of anterior primary teeth. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to report case of Angle class 1 malocclusion accompanied with anterior cross bite on 9 years old boy and the treatment management of this case. Case: A boy aged 9 years old came to Dental Hospital of Airlangga University at the department of Orthodontic, diagnosed with class 1 malocclusion accompanied with anterior cross bite between tooth 11 with 41 and 42. Clinical examination found the overjet of 11 was -2 mm, however overjet of 22 is 2 mm (normal). Overbite of 11 was 3 mm and 21 was 1 mm. Free way space was 2 mm (normal), upper arch discrepancy of more than 0.12 mm and lower arch discrepancy of less than -0.34 mm, the curve of spee was positive 1.5 mm, radiographic examination didn’t find any anomaly of tooth germ and teeth was in mixed dentition phase. Case management: The treatment used of Removable Orthodontic Appliance on maxillary teeth with elevation bite at posterior teeth and double cantilever springs at reverse bite teeth, activated once every three weeks. Elevation bite at posterior teeth should be removed when the teeth reached edge to edge position. There was no extraction of permanent tooth in this case. Conclusion: Case of Angle class 1 malocclusion with anterior cross bite can be corrected using simple Removable Orthodontic Appliance which consist of double cantilever springs, adams claps and posterior bite plate.

    Os microrganismos do gênero Candida são, em geral, comensais da cavidade bucal, mas, em determinados indivíduos e em situações específicas, podem transformar-se na forma parasitária, produzindo candidoses bucais. O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a presença das espécies do gênero Candida na saliva de indivíduos controle, comparando com pacientes que apresentavam diferentes fatores predisponentes. Foram avaliados 493 pacientes, divididos em 7 grupos: prótese total, prótese parcial removível, periodontite crônica de adulto, respiração bucal, aparelho ortodôntico fixo, aparelho ortodôntico removível e aparelho extrabucal. O grupo controle consistiu de 570 indivíduos que não apresentavam nenhum desses fatores, divididos em 2 grupos: infantil e adulto. Foram realizados o isolamento e a identificação das espécies do gênero Candida. Os resultados mostraram maior porcentagem de pacientes positivos para Candida nos grupos com fatores predisponentes em relação aos controles. Houve predominância de isolamento de C. albicans em todos os grupos, porém, os pacientes com fatores predisponentes apresentaram diversidade maior de espéciesCandida genus microorganisms are common to the normal oral flora, but in certain individuals and in specific situations they can produce oral candidosis. The aim of this study was to analyze the presence of Candida species in the saliva of control individuals and compare the results with those from patients with different predisposing factors. Four-hundred and ninety-three patients were divided in 7 groups: full denture wearers, Removable partial denture wearers, patients with adult chronic periodontitis, mouthbreathers, fixed Orthodontic Appliance wearers, Removable Orthodontic Appliance wearers, or facebow wearers. The control group consisted of 570 individuals who did not present any of these factors, divided in 2 groups: child and adult. Isolation and identification of Candida species were performed. The results showed higher percentage of positives for Candida in patients with predisposing factors in relation to the control. C. albicans was predominant in all groups.
