    First record of the alien pest Rhaponticum repens (Compositae) in the Iberian Peninsula.- Rhaponticum repens is reported for the first time for the flora of the Iberian Peninsula. The species is native from Central Asia and has become invasive in Argentina, Canada, Europe and the USA. It was detected for the first time in abandoned fields from Vilablareix, near the city of Girona (Catalonia, Spain) and in the valley of the Vinalopó in Alicante (Valencia, Spain), where it was collected as early as in 1959 but misdentified. Molecular data, based on nrDNA region ITS, suggest that the reported populations may be closely related to plants from the United States. Due to the extremely noxious character of the species and the possible relationship of Spanish plants with the invasive American populations, some kind of monitoring is recommended.Rhaponticum repens (Compositae), una nueva planta alóctona para la Península Ibérica.- Se cita por primera vez la especie Rhaponticum repens para la flora de la Península Ibérica.     Abstract:

    Abstract Variations in flower and seed and meiotic chromosome behaviors were investigated in micropropagated rhubarb ( Rheum Rhaponticum L.) ‘PC49’. The results showed that micropropagated plants had significantly higher variations in flower and seed morphologies and chromosome behaviors than plants derived from crown division. The results demonstrated that micropropagated plants grew 2–5 stamens, 8–13 stigmas, and 2–7 seed-wing, compared to 3 stamens, 9 stigmas and 3 (rarely 4) seed-wing in crown-derived plants. Additionally, alteration in chromosome behaviors (i.e. lagging and bridging) was observed only in micropropagated plants. All the results suggest that somaclonal variation may have been involved in micropropagated rhubarb ‘PC49’.

    Abstract:

    Alterations in leaf trichomes, stomatal characteristics and epidermal cellular features were investigated in micropropagated rhubarb (Rheum Rhaponticum L.) PC49. The results showed that micropropagated regenerants had produced significantly lower stomatal index, but larger epidermal cell size than conventional plants. In addition, altered trichome morphology and abnormal stomata, e.g. twin-stomata were constantly noted only in micropropagated plants. The microscopic observation demonstrated a substantially larger intercellular space in palisade and mesophyll only in leaves of micropropagated plants. But the results showed no difference in chloroplast number and chlorophyll content between micropropagated and conventional plants. All the abnormalities suggest somaclonal variation may have occurred in micropropagated rhubarb PC49.

    Abstract:

    Rhubarb (Rheum Rhaponticum L.) is a tetraploid (2n = 44) vegetable crop growing in Europe and North America. The results observed 44 chromosomes for both cultivars Timperly Early and PC49, but showing significant differences in DNA contents between them. Abnormal chromosome numbers (2n = 22 and 32) and chromosomal fragments were observed only in micropropagated plants of rhubarb PC49, suggesting somaclonal variation. The results provide further information on understanding morphological variation and increased disease susceptibility of micropropagated rhubarb PC49 in our previous investigation.

    Abstract:

    Variation in morphological traits and increased disease susceptibility were observed in micropropagated plants of rhubarb (Rheum Rhaponticum L.), PC49. Our investigations have demonstrated that micropropagated plants can vary substantially in morphological traits and the variation of quantitative traits was substantially greater than conventionally propagated plants. Micropropagated plants produced significantly more leaves than conventional plants under the same growth period, with a more bushy growth habit and/or recumbence. A higher incidence of disease (petiole spotting) was also observed in micropropagated plants. It is concluded that micropropagated PC49 had substantially higher incidence of somaclonal variation and regenerants were not suitable to establish an economic crop comparable to the conventional plants.

    Abstract:

    Abstract Variations in flower and seed and meiotic chromosome behaviors were investigated in micropropagated rhubarb ( Rheum Rhaponticum L.) ‘PC49’. The results showed that micropropagated plants had significantly higher variations in flower and seed morphologies and chromosome behaviors than plants derived from crown division. The results demonstrated that micropropagated plants grew 2–5 stamens, 8–13 stigmas, and 2–7 seed-wing, compared to 3 stamens, 9 stigmas and 3 (rarely 4) seed-wing in crown-derived plants. Additionally, alteration in chromosome behaviors (i.e. lagging and bridging) was observed only in micropropagated plants. All the results suggest that somaclonal variation may have been involved in micropropagated rhubarb ‘PC49’.

    Abstract:

    Alterations in leaf trichomes, stomatal characteristics and epidermal cellular features were investigated in micropropagated rhubarb (Rheum Rhaponticum L.) PC49. The results showed that micropropagated regenerants had produced significantly lower stomatal index, but larger epidermal cell size than conventional plants. In addition, altered trichome morphology and abnormal stomata, e.g. twin-stomata were constantly noted only in micropropagated plants. The microscopic observation demonstrated a substantially larger intercellular space in palisade and mesophyll only in leaves of micropropagated plants. But the results showed no difference in chloroplast number and chlorophyll content between micropropagated and conventional plants. All the abnormalities suggest somaclonal variation may have occurred in micropropagated rhubarb PC49.

    Abstract:

    Rhubarb (Rheum Rhaponticum L.) is a tetraploid (2n = 44) vegetable crop growing in Europe and North America. The results observed 44 chromosomes for both cultivars Timperly Early and PC49, but showing significant differences in DNA contents between them. Abnormal chromosome numbers (2n = 22 and 32) and chromosomal fragments were observed only in micropropagated plants of rhubarb PC49, suggesting somaclonal variation. The results provide further information on understanding morphological variation and increased disease susceptibility of micropropagated rhubarb PC49 in our previous investigation.

    Abstract:

    Variation in morphological traits and increased disease susceptibility were observed in micropropagated plants of rhubarb (Rheum Rhaponticum L.), PC49. Our investigations have demonstrated that micropropagated plants can vary substantially in morphological traits and the variation of quantitative traits was substantially greater than conventionally propagated plants. Micropropagated plants produced significantly more leaves than conventional plants under the same growth period, with a more bushy growth habit and/or recumbence. A higher incidence of disease (petiole spotting) was also observed in micropropagated plants. It is concluded that micropropagated PC49 had substantially higher incidence of somaclonal variation and regenerants were not suitable to establish an economic crop comparable to the conventional plants.
