    Chilli thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood is a pernicious invasive pest of several horticultural crops worldwide, causing economic losses to growers due to the damage caused to plants and in pest management costs. It has a wide host range among ornamental, vegetable, and fruit crops, and is known to feed on over 200 plant taxa. Apart from aesthetic, cosmetic or economic damage afflicted by feeding and oviposition on the host, S. dorsalis also vectors plant-damaging tospoviruses. Their high reproductive potential, multivoltine life-history, long host list, and ability to adapt to a wide range of climatic conditions help explain its presence on the exotic pest lists of many countries. Earlier considered to be single species, recent works demonstrated that S. dorsalis is a cryptic species complex of at least nine different species, two of which (South Asia 1 and East Asia 1) are found in the Continental United States. This study outlines the current information about the distribution and host range of the two thrips species within the US and highlights the available management tool for the dominant member (South Asia 1) of this species complex.

    Abstract The chilli thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), is a cryptic species complex of at least 9 distinct species, 2 (South Asia 1 and East Asia 1) of which exist in the USA. To integrate chemical insecticides and mycoinsecticides into the preventive and curative tactics used for S. dorsalis, we evaluated 10 older and newer chemical insecticides and 3 mycoinsecticides against S. dorsalis South Asia 1, a dominant member of the species complex in the USA. An insecticide was considered effective when it induced greater than 70% mortality of larvae or adults. The older insecticides (acetamiprid, clothianidin, thiamethoxam [foliar application], and imidacloprid [drench application]) were found to be efficacious in reducing S. dorsalis populations in both curative and preventive situations (≥7 d after treatment). This apparently mundane task is particularly diffi-cult if multiple species are morphologically indistinguishable but accurate identification can be determined with DNA barcoding provided an adequate reference set is available. Scirtothrips dorsalis is a highly polyphagous plant pest with a rapidly expanding global distribution and this species, as currently recognized, may be comprised of cryptic spe-cies. Here we report the development of a comprehensive DNA barcode library for S. dorsalis and seven nuclear markers via next-generation sequencing for identification use within the complex.     Abstract Chilli thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), is a troublesome pest of agronomic, vegetable, fruit, and ornamental crops. Scirtothrips dorsalis dispersal and monitoring were evaluated under field and greenhouse conditions in Homestead and Apopka, Florida, in 2007. A field test examined dispersal from Knock-Out® rose, Rosa ‘Radrazz’ (Rosaceae), onto green buttonwood, Conocarpus erectus L. (Combretaceae), and ‘Emerald Green’ schefflera, Schefflera arboricola Forst & Forst ‘Emerald Green’ (Araliaceae). Fewer adults were caught in traps set north, east, or south than west of rose plants corresponding to the average wind direction. Scirtothrips dorsalis flights increased during the morning to early afternoon, peaked about 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. EST, then decreased to almost no flights by 8:00 p.m. Warmer temperature and lower humidity corresponded to more adults caught per hour with most flights occurring after the accumulation of 300 degree-hours. ‘Emerald Green’ schefflera was...

This study was conducted to construct an oviposition model of overwintered Scirtothrips dorsalis as a part of its whole population model. RESULTS Adult longevity decreased with increasing temperature and ranged from 44.7 days at 13 °C to 9.9 days at 33 °C. S. dorsalis showed a maximum fecundity of 52.6 eggs female−1 at 21 °C, which declined to 13.9 eggs female−1 at 33 °C. Egg development time decreased from 28.41 days at 13 °C to 5.14 days at 29 °C and 5.5 days at 33 °C. An oviposition model was developed on the basis of three temperature-dependent submodels: total fecundity, age-specific oviposition rate and age-specific survival rate models CONCLUSION The oviposition model outputs followed the field occurrence patterns of S. dorsalis egg populations well, with a peak time discrepancy of 3–4 days. Our model should be useful for population modelling of S. dorsalis in agricultural crops. Furthermore, the present model can be independently used for the timing of spraying against S. dorsalis in IPM programmes of various crops. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry
