    Abstract:

    Abstract Hambidge’s study of Greek art convinced him that the secret of the beauty of Greek Design was in the conscious utilization of dynamic symmetry – the law of natural Design based upon the symmetry of growth in man and in plants. While our study of dynamic symmetry that underlies 150 real Screens shows an unmistakable use of plan schemes of the proportioning system in 61% of them, few adhere absolutely to it. Nevertheless, the evidence leads to the conclusion that layout was probably approximated by Designers of great native ability whose sense of form is highly developed.

    Abstract:

    Abstract This paper extends the study of dynamic symmetry as a Screen layout technique. Research in the past was based on manually Designed Screens with minimal software support. This paper formulates the manual process into algorithms. Empirical results based on the study are presented. One study reformats user proposed layouts automatically while the other employs system grid interaction with users during Design-time. Analysis of viewer selections yielded an average of 67.86 and 73.33% for those preferring dynamic symmetry Screens over the originals. These experiments showed that incorporating dynamic symmetry into Screen Design tools can affect user's perception on interface aesthetics.

    Abstract Current user interface builders provide only low-level assistance, because they have knowledge of neither the application, nor the principles by which interface elements are combined effectively. We describe a Design tool that unites the knowledge components essential for effective dialog box layout. The knowledge base model consists of (1) style knowledge, which provides Design-time constraints on interface specifications; (2) style application system, which handles the actual layout of dialog boxes based on the style knowledge base; (3) Design knowledge, which provides quantitative metrics to analyse the spatial properties of the dialog box layout; and (4) Design evaluation system, which uses evaluation metrics to compare and evaluate alternative Designs. As our empirical study shows, the reDesigns using the Design tool had significant effect on the preference data.

    This paper considers a technique for analysing the composition information of displays based on Hambidge's dynamic symmetry. While, by using this technique, our study of dynamic symmetry that underlies 150 real Screens shows an unmistakable use of plan schemes of the system in 40% of them, few adhere absolutely to it. It is hard to say if their use was intentional. The use of dynamic symmetry as a Screen layout technique has not been mentioned so far because so little is known about it. However, such technique can have a substantial impact on the user's perception of interface aesthetics.

  • The Improvement of the Electronic Health Record User Experience by Screen Design Principles

    The amount and complexity of data accumulated in electronic health record (EHR) is quite large, and the quantity of information that clinicians can examine and handle is very limited. Thus, it is necessary to enhance the accessibility of EHR by improving the user experience (UX). To apply information visualization that turns EHR data into an understandable visual format, we propose following five Screen Design principles when Designing UX interfaces. #1: One view should contain single patient data. #2: Data should be summarized or titled for overview and details should be given on-demand. #3: Data should be displayed in time-series. #4: Data should be categorized by primary type. #5: More data should be displayed at the same time. Three Screen Designs are plausible utilizing the above-mentioned principles. To measure the UX of Screen Designs and validate the Design principles, we built an EHR viewer system that has three windows corresponding to these Screen Designs and had it tested by medical staff. The results of the test revealed that the UX of the Screen Design is proportional to the number of Design principles that the Screen Design incorporates. It shows that the proposed Screen Design principles improve the UX of EHR.
