ABSTRACT Seaweed Farming in the subdistrict Bluto, District Sumenep, East Java, has significant contribution in the economy of coastal communities, but there are fishing activities like catching up and marine product proccessing that have negative impact to the degradation of water quality and then directly affect the production of Seaweed. The purpose of this study is find new location of the development of Seaweed Farming activities in a sustainable manner that is free from of community activities with a view of ecological factors and carrying capacity of the waters in the analies of the subdistrict Bluto. The method was used to analyze its ecological suitability includes temperature, transparency, depth, current velocity, bottom water condition, salinity, DO, Nitrite, ortophosphate, pH, BOD, and COD, also evaluation of the predators and diseases Seaweed. Then, the data is scored to determine its suitability class with SIG approach. Environmental carrying capacity is analyzed by determining 60% of suitable sites. The result showed that Bluto territorial waters was potential for Seaweed Farming development as it was in Class S1(very suitable) and S2 (suitable with conditions) about 770.19 ha and able to contain maximum 42,788 units of Seaweed floated bamboos. Predators and diseases identified in Bluto waters are rabbitfishes ( Siganus. sp ), ice-ice disease, green algae ( Chaetomorpha crassa ), and Poli’s stellate barnacle ( Chthamalus stellatus ).

Sediment-focused environmental impact of long-term large- scale marine bivalve and Seaweed Farming in Sungo Bay, China
Aquaculture, 2020Co-Authors: Jihong Zhang, Pia Kupka Hansen, Wu Wenguang, Ke Sun, Yunxia ZhaoAbstract:Abstract The sediment condition of Sungo Bay, China was assessed using macro-fauna investigations and sediment parameters (pH, Eh, visual observations) by MOM system (Modelling-Ongrowing fish farms-Monitoring). Based on the current status and comparison with previous results, the sediment environmental impact of large-scale bivalve and Seaweed culture was analyzed. The main cultured species (oyster Crassostrea gigas, scallop Chlamys farreri, Seaweed Saccharina japonica) and the culture methods have remained the same, but the culture areas have expanded to the outside of the bay. 10 sampling stations were set and a total of 76 sediment samples were collected during 2017–2018. The results showed: 1) Benthic macro-fauna was found in all samples that suggested sediment condition was “acceptable”. There was not significantly seasonal change in macro-fauna abundance, species number and diversity index, but the abundance in summer was significantly higher in 2017 than that of in 2006. 2) For all the sample stations, the redox potential stayed above +53 mV and sediment conditions belonged to condition 1 concerning chemical parameters. Most sample stations belonged to condition 1 with sporadic stations in condition 2 according to sensory parameters; 3) The sediment status of Sungo Bay was in “best condition” based on biological, chemical and sensory parameters, which hadn't changed compared to 10 years ago. The results suggest the effects of large-scaled bivalve and Seaweed Farming activities on the benthic environment of Sungo Bay is low. The reasons that the sediment environments maintain good conditions were analyzed.

assessment of the local environmental impact of intensive marine shellfish and Seaweed Farming application of the mom system in the sungo bay china
Aquaculture, 2009Co-Authors: Jihong Zhang, Pia Kupka Hansen, Jianguang Fang, Wei Wang, Zengjie JiangAbstract:Abstract The impact of large scale shellfish (Crassostrea gigas, Chlamys farreri) and Seaweed (Laminaria japonica) culture on the benthic environment at the Sungo Bay, China was assessed using the B-investigation of the MOM system. The MOM system (Modelling-Ongrowing fish farms-Monitoring) was developed to control the impact of organic waste from marine fish farms in Norway, but it is based on a general concept of environmental management and may be adapted to other fish species and longline shellfish or Seaweed Farming by adjusting parameters and techniques. 10 sampling station were set and a total of 66 sediment samples were collected. Seasonal variations in three groups of parameters were compared, but no significant differences were detected between the different culture species sites. Benthic animals were found in all samples, and the redox potential stayed above + 50 mV. The sediment conditions according to the Groups 2 and 3 parameters of the MOM-system were compared. The results suggest that the Sungou Bay benthic environment belong to condition 1 or 2, which means that the effects of long term shellfish and Seaweed Farming activities on the benthic environment of Sungou Bay were low. But the result also showed that the impacts in summer and autumn are likely to be greater than in winter and spring. More studies need to be performed to adjust the investigation to Chinese conditions and to shellfish Farming, so as to form an adequate system for China. The reasons that keep the Sungo Bay benthic environment in good condition were analysed.
