    Previous studies have found that acts of self-control like emotion regulation deplete blood glucose levels. The present experiment investigated the hypothesis that the extent to which people's blood glucose levels decline during emotion regulation attempts is influenced by whether they believe themselves to be good or poor at emotion control. We found that although good and poor emotion regulators were equally able to achieve positive and negative moods, the blood glucose of poor emotion regulators was reduced after performing an affect-improving task, whereas the blood glucose of good emotion regulators remained unchanged. As evidence suggests that glucose is a limited energy Resource upon which self-control relies, the implication is that good emotion regulators are able to achieve the same positive mood with less cost to their Self-Regulatory Resource. Thus, depletion may not be an inevitable consequence of engaging in emotion regulation.

    Is the self-regulation failure that comes from prior exertions of self-regulation--the ego-depletion effect--the result of fatigue? A reading of the literature suggests that Self-Regulatory Resource depletion and fatigue might be overlapping constructs, but direct empirical evidence is lacking. The authors put this question to the test by subjecting half of their participants to total sleep deprivation for 24 hours whereas others were rested; they crossed this factor with a self-regulation manipulation in which participants did or did not suppress their emotional reactions to a film. The authors' measure of self-regulation was aggressive responses in a game involving blasting noise at an opponent. Contrary to expectations, there was no effect of sleep deprivation on aggression. In confirmation of the limited-Resource model, the authors found that depleted participants were more aggressive than nondepleted participants (irrespective of fatigue condition). Lax self-regulation seems to be from a lack of Self-Regulatory capacity, not fatigue.

    Across six field and lab experiments, we found that impaired self-control fosters compliance with charitable requests. Experiments 1 and 2 showed that Self-Regulatory Resource depletion was induced when participants yielded to the initial requests of a foot-in-the-door script aimed at procuring volunteer behavior. Experiment 3 demonstrated that Self-Regulatory Resource depletion mediated the effects of yielding to the initial requests of a foot-in-the-door technique on compliance with a charitable target request. Experiments 4–6 demonstrated that weak temporary and chronic self-control ability fostered compliance through reliance on compliance-promoting heuristics (i.e., reciprocity, liking, and consistency).

    This research investigated impulse buying as resulting from the depletion of a common—but limited—Resource that governs self-control. In three investigations, participants’ Self-Regulatory Resources were depleted or not; later, impulsive spending responses were measured. Participants whose Resources were depleted, relative to participants whose Resources were not depleted, felt stronger urges to buy, were willing to spend more, and actually did spend more money in unanticipated buying situations. Participants having depleted Resources reported being influenced equally by affective and cognitive factors and purchased products that were high on each factor at equal rates. Hence, Self-Regulatory Resource availability predicts whether people can resist impulse buying temptations.

    The proposed model argues that Self-Regulatory Resource depletion underlies central aspects of the escape model of suicide, specifically attentional processes and emotional regulation. In response to misfortunes that cast the self in an unacceptablybad light, the person first tries to regulate negative affect.Afteraffect regulation fails, the person next tries to regulate attention by cultivating a focus on meaningless, concrete, nonevaluative stimuli. The resulting state of cognitive deconstruction alleviates self-awareness of personal weaknesses but also removes inhibitions against suicide. But these efforts to regulate emotions and attention and to sustain the deconstructed state lead to a depletion of Self-Regulatory Resources, rendering it difficult for the person to exit the suicide spiral. Our model is supported by research on the effects of cognitive deconstruction, passivity and disinhibition, as well as by studies relating suicide factors to self-regulation and those relating suicide and impulse control problems to neurological mechanisms. We believe that examining the Self-Regulatoryaspects of escapist behaviors, such as suicide, will allow researchers and practitioners to better identify at-riskpatients and allow for improved treatment of their symptoms. We advocate aiding at-risk individuals, such as those with impulse control problems or self-regulation difficulties, to replenish Self-Regulatory Resources by engaging in Self-Regulatory activities in which they will be successful. Successful experiences with self-regulation may enable the person to cope successfully with negative events that otherwise couldbegina self-destructive cycle.

    Abstract:

    Background: This investigation focuses on what occurs to individuals' Self-Regulatory Resource during controlled Interpersonal Affect Regulation (IAR) which is the process of deliberately influencing the internal feeling states of others. Combining the strength model of self-regulation and the Resources conservation model, the investigation tested whether: (1) IAR behaviors are positively related to ego-depletion because goal-directed behaviors demand Self-Regulatory processes, and (2) the use of affect-improving strategies benefits from a source of Resource-recovery because it initiates positive feedback from targets, as proposed from a Resource-conservation perspective. Method: To test this, a lab study based on an experimental dual-task paradigm using a sample of pairs of friends in the UK and a longitudinal field study of a sample of healthcare workers in Spain were conducted. Results: The experimental study showed a depleting effect of interpersonal affect-improving IAR on a subsequent self-regulation task. The field study showed that while interpersonal affect-worsening was positively associated with depletion, as indicated by the level of emotional exhaustion, interpersonal affect-improving was only associated with depletion after controlling for the effect of positive feedback from clients. Conclusion: The findings indicate that IAR does have implications for Resource depletion, but that social reactions play a role in the outcome.
